Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva

An extremely well presented Venezuela rum that despite all its crafty trappings still falls into the gulf of added sugar. We think there might be a really tremendous rum in here somewhere, but that addition of sugar sadly homogenizes it down into 'just another one of those'.

The sugar treatment is fairly standard with nearly all rum. That's where the sales are the way that malt whisky is primarily for blends. I don't care for it but it's what goes in millions of cocktails the world round. It's also the only sort of rum you can buy outside a select few countries. These rums, usually from the old Spanish colonies, are so sweet that they more closely resemble liqueurs even when you can detect the origin. They are actually highly rated in the worlds they occupy and if you're in a country like Spain it's all you get. I'm fortunate to have access to Velier, Kill Devil, Boutique-y Rum, etc, etc. Fine review as always. WT

Agree with you, there is a rum revolution brewing, but all depends how the rum industry aligns itself to getting a more transparent, honest offering to the rum enthusiast.

I purchased a nip bottle like you have there and I really like it. You guys have mentioned a few times that this rum has too much sugar, what rum do you recommend that doesn’t have so much sugar and is highly rated ?

Appleton Estate is my go-to for no sugar added rum. To replicate the style of this Diplomatico, I would try the 12 year old, which is still surprisingly affordable.

Are you guys doing an advent calendar this year I was Informed due to covid 19 there isn’t a secret spirits calendar but I do see older editions available I want to make sure I get the same one you guys would be tasting that boutiquey whiskey company has one I believe but I’m not sure if it’s the latest edition

I reached out to Boutiquey and Drinks by the Dram about featuring one of theirs but heard nothing back. We may have to resort to picking one up locally, which will mean a measly 12 Drams of Christmas...

Contrary to what "Tasting Notes by Spirits Review" states, this is not "bottled at 12 years of age." Far from it. It's basically alcohol packed with additives, giving it an artificial taste easily picked up by a discerning palate. Good rum just doesn't need 10 teaspoons-full of added sugar (pLtr). Nor all that other stuff. It has 10 times more added sugar than Havana Club 7. The excellent Santa Teresa 1796 has none. Zacapa has some added sugar - but not at these levels.

Sugar is for make a cheaply produced product drinkable. Try something from st lucia or foursquare instead. There are a lot of nice rum without additives. The problem is that there is no transparency in the rum industry, you can add and do what ever you want and not have to declare it.

Such a shame that it's so hard to find a decent rum. They charge a premium price for a lot of these rums, and they are just so sickly sweet (looking at you Ron Zacapa). Dictador 20y is a really nice rum, and no added sugar. I doubt that there is much rum in it that's 20yo, but it is a really decent rum. Barbancourt 12y is also quite good, and not dosed.

I'm of the mindset that if you add any post-production sweeteners to your spirit that it should be classified as a liqueur or cocktail mix. Simply unacceptable for a self-respecting quality spirit.

@sneksnekitsasnek tell me then what classifies a spirit as distinct from a liqueur? If not for the fact that a spirit ought to be the byproduct of distillation and nothing else?

@sneksnekitsasnek so if the sugar added equals 2.5% weight then it would be a liqueur by NA standards... And more generally adding sugar alone would also put it under the looser definition. That's kinda what I'm saying; once you start adding stuff in post production it's no longer technically a pure spirit and becomes something else. Unfortunately (in my opinion) the standards are pretty lax with sprits in south America/islands with additives, aging, etc. This is why we see distilleries such as foursquare and the like skyrocketing in demand and value, as they self-impose strict Scotch/bourbon-like standards on their rums.

@sneksnekitsasnek well pure spirits would be most vodkas, gins and whisky from around the world. Why care? Well because it's not advertised or displayed on the bottle and most people would like to know what exactly they're buying and ingesting I should think. Nobody is saying that noone should be allowed to make these styles of rums/cognacs, but they should be under a separate category from actual pure spirits since they undergo a separate process. It's not about imposing geographic or cultural practices so much as it is setting standards for quality and consumer information.

@sneksnekitsasnek and some countries require e150 to be listed and I would agree it should be. But it doesn't really affect the taste a noticeable amount generally speaking. Most people just don't know about it... Of those who do, I would suggest that most DO care about it and prefer their Scotch without it. U.S.

@sneksnekitsasnek yes... Because they can still do all of that whilst also Knowing what's in what they are buying ... And a whisky with sugar added isn't whisky - it's a cordial. it's Drambuie. It's Fireball or jack daniels Tennessee honey. Lots of People seem to like that stuff BECAUSE it's not whisky. Rum, as all spirits, should be the same is my argument.

Excellent review, I was in the rum aisle of my local liquor store, and a shopper recommended Diplomatico to me. Wish I had watched this review first. If I wanted sugary liquid, I would have cracked open a coke. This rum is an insult to the category, I may just pour the bottle down the sink.
