To help stealing, shop keepers can die IF NOT AGGROED and you won't be blamed. The shop keeper you aggroed hurting the other shop keeper didn't count against you because the hurt one wasn't aggroed. You also can't hurt them, aggroed or not. If you hurt them, it increases the time needed even if you don't kill them. But if a keeper dies to lava, spikes, explosions, etc it won't count towards you killing them. It's the moment you aggro them and they start tracking you that if they get hurt or die it's your fault

I just tested it. Stole from floor 2 with a rope, stole from floor 3 without hurting them or blowing up shop, no forgiveness on floor 4. Edit: test #2, forgiven. The long reddit/gamefaqs forgiveness post said that stealing from floor 3 was 2 points of sin but now idk I guess not.
