No words can describe just how next level that Dire Straits were live. Seriously in a league of their own. Best ofs, are quite literally the most subjective of all creativity. We can sure have favourites but we cannot call a best. So many styles that cover so many genres. One thing is for sure... Mark Knopfler is always right up there in these "best of" lists for the most part. There is no denying the man's genius for songwriting, arranging, guitaring (of course) and live playing. The same can be said with the wide range of musicians who make up any lineup of Dire Straits. Lastly, there is no Dire Straits without Mark Knopfler. He's a virtuoso and so unique. He cannot be replaced. Thanks for another great reaction to my favourite band and front man. Quality.

Right you are. Word- and speechless he leaves me every time I watch one of those live videos and witness the utter shock and flabbergastedness (is that a word) of other reactors (or is it reactioneers)? I am not sure how many times I have seen those videos of live performances of Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road and all the others and I experience them as new every time. I have no idea what it is that makes his sound or the one of DS so special. Not sure how many heart or other strings I have in my body, but they make sure they pull them all. This is not just loving their music, it is almost like they are expressing (or me finding) a part of what and who I am.

Find the Thank You Australasia concert. It is a full set from the end of the Brothers In Arms tour. It has, job my opinion, the best version of Tunnel of Love as well as a unique version of So Far Away

Mark wrote this song after a relative tried to contact him when he was on tour and said "You're harder to get on the phone than Elvis". The main rif Paul Franklin plays on the pedal steel in this song was basicly just his warmup routine, Mark heard that and said "I can use that in a song". And can you believe Dire Straits started their concert with this song on this tour?, this was also recorded just a few miles from where I live now at the Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam. This tour had Paul Franklin on pedal steel, Phil Palmer on rhythm guitar, Alan Clark and Guy Flether on keys, Chris Whitten on drums, Danny Cummings on percussion, and Chris White on sax and background vocals. Basicly just Mark and John Ilsley were left from the original lineup.

As well as all the Dire Straits songs that he created, his solo material is also fantastic. Nine, and counting, albums with songs like What it is, Sailing to Philadelphia, Song for Sonny Liston, Lights of Taomina and many, many more. Also his film soundtracks are great too - Local Hero, The Princess Bride, Cal and many others. A prolific songwriter and it's all great. Not to mention his collaborations with the likes of Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins and many more....

He opened with this in Nashville on his Sailing To Philadelphia tour in 2001. I was still outside the Ryman finalizing my ticket purchase when downtown Nashville began reverberating. It was beautiful.

Fun fact on the pedal steel riff going on in the background, Paul Franklin was doing his warm up routine and Mark heard it and said "Let's use that!"

I've seen Dire Straits live 5 times, and Mark solo once. The Dire Straits shows were the best concerts I've seen in terms of sound quality and playing ability by the band members. Mark of course is a damn genius, however, his song writing is best as a sol artist IMHO.

Gotta love Mark Knopfler's quiet cool style of singing and playing the guitar, truly one of the best ever. Looks like the crowd is having a great time, and it is quite large to boot. If I had to guess I'd say European, or maybe even British. The list is the lineup from their first album, also there was a keyboard player who was not listed. I think Pick Withers was the drummer in the red shirt..

Mark wrote so many great songs you could react to "Money for nothing", "Walk of life", "Tunnel of love", "Telegraph Road", "Planet of New Orleans", "Ride across the river", "Romeo and Juliet" and that's just his work with Dire Straits, he also started a solo career after Dire Straits with great songs like "What it is", "Sailing to Philadelphia", "Speedway at Nazareth", "Boom like that" and "Song for Sonny Liston", to many songs to mention really

Hey mate thanks for the great reaction. Always loving your channel. The lineup here is Mark Knopfler, Guy Fletcher- keyboards, Alan Clark - keyboards, John Illsley- bass, Danny Cummings- percussion, Chris Whitten- drums , Paul Franklin- pedal steel who is an American, fantastic player, and Chris White-sax and other,Phil Palmer on rhythm guitar. I also recommend from this concert Private Investigations, Brothers In Arms, Heavy Fuel and The Bug. Also from Sydney Final Concert 1986, Tunnel Of Love and from Alchemy Live 1983 Once Upon A Time In The West. Thanks again for reacting to Calling Elvis. All the best from Australia , cheers 🎸🎸🎸😊

That's not a slide, that's a full on pedal steel, manned by Paul Franklin on a contraption he customized and a sound very unique to himself. The guy's a maestro. Of course if he wasn't he wouldn't be sharing the stage with Mark Knopfler. By the way, that was the opening number. By the end the audience is sated but exhausted.

Great band. Love Dire Straits and Mark definitely has his own sound. Unfortunately the band were never able to top Brothers in Arms which was a phenomenal success. This has happened to a few artists in the past, which is a great shame because they still produced some great music, as shown here! Cheers as always. 😊😎🎸🇬🇧🇺🇦
