The Dire Straits perform "Private Investigations" on their "On the Night" DVD.
Band members include: Mark Knopfler (lead vocals, lead guitar), John Illsley (bass, backing vocals), Alan Clark (keyboards), Guy Fletcher (keyboards, backing vocals), Danny Cummings (percussion, backing vocals), Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar), Phil Palmer (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Chris White (saxophone, flute, backing vocals), Chris Whitten (drums).

For those who understand that being a good guitarist is about more than, say, how _fast_ you can hit notes, Mark Knopfler really brings something special to the table. Something almost intangible. He's one of those one-in-a-lifetime musicians who can truly give his instrument a voice of its own. He gives the guitar a tone and feeling that are almost unique to it, and you can practically feel it come to life and start singing by his side. Fantastic stuff.

+camtheham13 Many guitarists, professional and amateur, fingerpick. From personal experience it opens up a whole lot of playing flexibility as opposed to just using a pick ( notwithstanding that there are some excellent pick-only players). But not many can articulate the genre like Knopfler who has mastered a fluidity and clarity of tone. It helps him, of course, that he is playing his own compositions and not trying to copy someone else's intentions, as the likes of myself and countless others are trying to do of his.

I've loved this song ever since I first heard it almost 30 years ago, but the more I listen to this live version the more it seems to me like one of the best live pieces of music ever recorded . The emotions, the atmosphere, the musicianship, the way it switches from loudness to silence and vice versa (all this goes both for live and studio versions, of course)... so unique, I don't remember hearing anything like it. Imagine being among that crowd with the privilege to hear it in person...

How awesome are Dire Straits, I remember when they came to Adelaide in the Eighties, it was simulcast live on FM radio, i wasn't at the concert but was about 1km away from Football Park, i could here them clearly outside as well as on radio, it was a memorable moment indeed as a teen. Mark Knofler is the consummate professional.

Für mich die beste Version von "Private Investigations" meine es war in Köln ein Jahr zuvor noch besser wo ich Dire Straits am 17. Juli 1992 live im überfüllten Müngersdorfer Stadion live erleben durfte... (Zwei Conzerte waren geplant, nur eins hat statt gefunden, weil wohl zu "viele" Karten verkauft wurden) ;-)

This song is like if film noir met a spaghetti western, but better than either. Mark's playing is just exquisite. It's sad he never gets the recognition he deserves as one of the top ten greatest guitarists who ever lived. And the fact that he has a signature to his playing--his style is unmistakably his own--that's very rare. I've listened to this band and this song since the eighties and revisiting them now is just, bittersweet. I doubt we will ever see bands like this again.

Never forget their KEY player, after Mark, incredible ALAN CLARK. How important he is for the band, you can see on his truly magnificent work here, but especialy on "Brothers in arms". He lead the song from the first note to the blast. He lift the song on entirely different level. Without him, Dire straits would be totaly different band. A lot more sterile and average...Mark must be very blessed to have him in the band..
