The basic story behind this song is that while they were on tour in America they needed a boom box, so they went to a store. MTV was on one of the TVs in the store & not knowing who they were the guy in the shop started complaining about all the work he has to do while rock stars just have to play an instrument & get payed a lot of money and get women for free. This always made me laugh because I was in rock bands for 40 years & I can tell you for nothing, it's bloody hard work. ✌️♥️

Yes indeed, he wrotes the words down from this employe. And Mark work as little journalist, teacher and even moved furniture! He made a joke about it, because as you said it‘s hard work to get as good as them. And the intro and high voice is Sting on the Album. For a great reaction from them, take tunnel of love!

i don't think so, as bad as he talked about the artists. Knopfler gave a lot of money away, from brothers in arms he spent for soldiers with ptsd. And the whole income he made with the album in Africa, he gave it to feed the world in Africa!

Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

I am glad you say one of the best! For me he is, but there is no best. From Gilmour, Clapton to Santana, they all have a different approach to play. Mark uses the guitar more as a second voice. In my opinion!

"Tunnel of love" should be in the list, but you can't count them all, otherwise you can't come to an end. Well done👏🎸

He wrote the song in a store. “The lead character in "Money for Nothing" is a guy who works in the hardware department in a television/custom kitchen/refrigerator/microwave appliance store. He's singing the song. I wrote the song when I was actually in the store. I borrowed a bit of paper and started to write the song down in the store. I wanted to use a lot of the language that the real guy actually used when I heard him, because it was more real....” Mark Knopler (composer)

This song was written about Mötley Crüe! They were the biggest band from the sunset strip (Cali) at the time and people hated them! Aerosmif actually wrote "Dude looks like a lady" about Vince Neil (Mötley's singer) One of my Grandpa's LOVED his song. He passed away by own hand. This song always make me think of him. He passed right after I was born. After learning it's about the Mötley team! They're what I think of as well

This is a great song, one of the greatest riffs in guitar history, as always with Dire Straits the song is developed more live, without Mark playing some great solos. I always advise listening to the album version of their songs, then the same song live, Tunnel of Love being a perfect example, Mark's solo work is also amazing, check out Going Home (Theme From Local Hero) from his first film soundtrack, also Darling Pretty, his first single from his first solo album.

This is back when MTV was the bomb…when they actually played music and weren’t so offended. Well until they tried to sensor Eminem.
