Just wanted to write the same. And it's clever, it's a perfect song to start a show from the point of view of a band. Even if you done a proper soundcheck, there is always something a little off when you finally go on stage. So it's nice if you got an intro to the first song, where you can do last second adjustments.

@@mrtveye6682 she missed a lot not knowing the studio version ;) What i mean is to avoid a wrong input of a song. Most ppl in the world first get a song to listen in the radio or on album, before a band go playing it on tour. This is the natural way. When you do it opposite way, you can miss to understand why something sounds live like that, because you have no comparison and you building a wrong picture in your mind of that song.

It's perfectly correct to do so as much as sitting in a room and listening to a CD. Hearing recorded music in a fixed format is the aberration in all music history.

Mark Knopfler (the lead singer of Dire Straits) was in a department store and overheard some workers talking about the musicians which were on the display TVs and he wrote down their conversation and turned it into this song pretty much worked for word. Great song and the Live Aid version is excellent of course, but you really should watch the original music video for this as it was really ground breaking use of computer graphics back in the day.

That "I want my MTV" thing is part of the full length version of the song - it's a long intro, which really builds the tension for when the song actually starts. It's awesome.

@@oldshiny3012 The live Alchemy versions of "Once Upon A Time In The West", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Sultans Of Swing", "Tunnel Of Love", "Telegraph Road" and "Going Home" are all brilliant and well worth checking out. Filmed on a single sell-out night at the Hammersmith Odeon on 23rd July 1983, by watching the whole concert you get a sense of the incredible energy levels and sheer indefatigability of the whole band. It's truly an awesome watch!

@@grapeman63 Another little known fact, it is one of the earliest digitally recorded live audio performances, using what was state of the art equipment at that time, the reason the sound is so pristine to this day.. While in those days they had started digital recording in studios, it was still very rarely done at live venues for logistical reasons. For this recording, they used a mobile recording studio built into a large straight truck, originally made for The Rolling Stones, literally known as The Rolling Stones Mobile Unit.

Back when we were kids the phrase…”I want my MTV”…was a commercial MTV put out when cable TV was new, and celebrities would come out and say…”I want my MTV”…people like Billy Idol, Sting from the Police, and they would say…”Call your local cable provider, and tell them..I want my MTV!”

Sting sang on the original recording and it starts out the exact same way., including the drum part--Biggest MTV hit of the year..HEAVY rotation..the song made the station more popular (They'd use it for thier ads ), while the LP was a great comeback from Dire Straits after many critics had written them off. (Thier previuos 2 LP's hadn't sold well) The spirit of playing for our farmers at Live Aid was mos def a "Performance Booster" for all the artists there, it's a ugly shame how even today, U.S. farmers are struggling to survive while our government gives them no help..

MTV (Music Television) started it ALL back in the early 80's with music videos and their VJ's (not DJ's) the original reactors! This song was one of the biggest hits on the channel!! Then came the MTV movie awards, then reality tv started with them, then came the MTV unplugged with Pearl Jam and many other bands!! That's why they're singing "I want my MTV"

Every new generation that comes to know the all the fantastic music I grew up with puts a huge smile in my heart. I have loving memories of this song because my 6 year old daughter turned me onto it when I came home from a Med cruise with the Navy back in '85! Cheers....

Oh, no! I mean, yay, I'm excited that you're doing this song, but looks like you did the live version, and as someone else has already said, you should see the original music video. It's a classic, and while probably pretty cheesey now, the effects were pretty new and mind blowing at the time. Also, I don't know how familiar you are with Weird Al Yankovic, if you're not, he's a musician and comedian that's famous for doing parody cover versions of famous songs. In the 80s he even had a movie called "UHF", which is very Weird Al. So if you like him, the movie is hilarious, though it does reference a lot of movies and cultural stuff that you might not be as familiar with. In the movie, he does a parody of this song and the original music video that's based on "The Beverly Hillbillies" which was a TV show in the 60s. You can find a clip of it if you don't want to see the movie. Just look up Weird Al, Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies. Oh, yeah. Please also do "Sultans of Swing"!

The thing about the Weird Al parody - is if you aren't familiar with the Beverly Hillbillies (which was often in syndication on UHF stations..... ) then I don't know that it brings the punch as those of us that were stuck with 3-5 channels growing up and Beverly Hillbillies was just something you couldn't avoid if you were watching anything.

Another great reaction Biss, when you listen to the studio cut, you'll see that it's not a soundcheck, it's how the song actually starts. This was so important back then as MTV was growing and the phrase "I want my MTV" was part of their marketing campaign. As for other performances from live aid, the two that come to mind are, of course Led Zeppelin and, Judas Priest (they are at the Philadelphia venue) it was a magical festival, for the best cause. You HAVE to react U2 at Live Aid, Bono jumped from the stage and saved 3 girls from getting crushed to death against the barriers by the crowd. The band didn't miss a beat and he danced with the 3 girls!! They changed their whole show right in the middle because of this!!!

I was 12 when Live Aid took place. It was a HUGE broadcast event, on both TV and radio. It was a who's who of pop music royalty, with colabs all over the place. This was at a time where MTV was actually a MUSIC channel. Phil Collins had a unique position at this event. It was two events on the same day, one in Wembley, London, opening with a career topping Queen. They came out the gates and got the crowd HYPED, which carried on the rest of the day with all the other acts. Phil played Wembley, then flew to the US via Concorde, then played the US concert in the same day.

I've loved that song for so long. I played the crap out of the cassette in my first car a 1981 Chevy Monte Carlo. I purchased both just right after my eighteenth birthday. It's a great album. Next up on your Live Aid journey could be Neil Young and The International Harvesters....If you are looking for a song about someone looking back to their past there are Sugar Mountain and Helpless...Cautionary songs ... The original event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, a movement that started with the release of the successful charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in December 1984.
