Wow, Nick, that was a fast response! Thank you for doing this so quickly, in time for his birthday. I think you were wearing a very appropriate shirt - this reminds me so much of Morricone! Happy Birthday, Mark!

Was just listening to Mark's BBC Desert Island Discs episode and one of his picks was 'Deborah's Theme' from 'Once Upon a Time in America'

I'm going to request the live version reaction. The improvisation is godlike . His band is just so in sync.

The title track and 'The Man's Too Strong' my favourite from this album. Happy Birthday Mark from a fellow Geordie. Legend...

The whole of Brothers In Arms is one of my two favourite Dire Straits albums, the other being Communiqué. So many fantastically sublime gems, incl. this one here. 🙂 The cricket noises you hear in the background do give me the impression that we're boating through the swamp.

Happy Birthday Mark! So many years of incredible music. This is actually one of my favourites from this album. I still think you both might enjoy the Communiqué album - most like the debut sound with original four band members.

Just so everyone knows, Mark just dropped One Deep River (Deluxe) as a birthday gift to all of us. 6 or 7 new tracks and they are up to his standard of excellence. Happy Birthday Mark. You are among my top 5 humans I've never met, but would love to. Edit - For me this song sorta defines "sublime". Long been a favorite on my playlist and, like you, it took me a awhile to warm to it.

I am late for this one and Happy belated Birthday to Mark! I had no idea he was that old (like I"m so young haha) Such a moving song, great choice JK. Mark's guitar work is like no other. This tune has so many twists and turns.🎶Thank you Nick for this reaction as always.🍂🍃

If you stopped listening to D.S. after their first album you've definitely missed a lot of brilliant music. Give a listen to the entire Brothers in Arms and Love over Gold albums as they are brilliant like no one else. Definitely has that D.S. signature sound.

You should listen to Marks solo work, it has a lot of songs with country vibe. Marks father Erwin Knopfler was Hungarian Jewish and fled to the UK before WW2

The bass and drums sounds like something the Police play in a lot of their songs.

Such a flexible band! If you liked the studio version, you will be absolutely mesmerized by live recording of this song from Sydney in 1986:)

I wonder if the song is about Nicaragua during the California gold rush... Could explain the jungle sounds. The American filibuster took over the country for a couple of years, Mark knopfler a former newspaper reporter news how to tell a story and his guitar playing is champion.

Mark Knopfler was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, an OBE, in 1999 not a knighthood so he is still Mr Knopfler rather than Sir Mark. Quite why he doesn't have knighthood I have no idea. I can only assume he turned one down because his accomplishments dwarf those of many of those who do have knighthoods. If he hasn't declined a knighthood then there should be a campaign on his behalf. I'm sure the Royal family, who don't have a say in the awarding of most honours (they're determined by a committee), would approve. Mark's done a lot for The Prince's Trust, which was founded by King Charles when he was the Prince of Wales, as well as for cancer charities. Dire Straits were also one of, if not the, favourite band of Prince William's late mother.
