Great to hear this song again. The whole album is superb. It's a shame that Dire Straits don't get much attention these days so kudos to you for highlighting their talent.

Finally a reaction to a Dire Straits song where they actually listened to the lyrics! Knopfler's storytelling, through guitar & lyrics is amazing in most of his songs. All this from 2 people for whom English isn't their first language. Great video!

Actually the lyrics of this song are quite angry. This song was about Mark Knopfler's then girlfriend Holly Vincent. He helped her set up her own musical career but when that got going she dumped him and started telling people that she could have done it without him anyway. So that line "I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real, how can you look at me as if I were just another one of your deals?" is very powerful.

Exactly, and the emotion I've seen in concert when he performs this song is real it's quite amazing.
@saschaschneider63555 жыл бұрын
There's also the line "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him" which refers to an interview where Holly said "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up". At the point he wrote the song Mark was very much still in love with Holly but thought that she used him to boost her career.

Absolutely correct. If you get a chance, listen to Love Over Gold, It Never Rains from the Love Over Gold album (1982). Those songs are also written about her. Of her fall from popularity in the music scene he writes 'and it's a sad reminder when your organ grinder has to come to you for the rent, and all you've got to give him is the use of your side-show tent". Ooch.

Mark Knopfler and dire straits, wrote songs about a wide range of topics, from NASCAR, to the drawing of the border between the North and South USA during the civil war, and yet if you listen or hear any of their songs you'll immediately know its them, and Marks guitar playing is very distinct too. an under rated guitar player if there ever was one.

@Mr MEMé Speedway at Nazareth. It describes the CART racing series, specifically the 2000 or 2001 season, given the venues named and their order. Nazareth isn't mentioned until the last verse. He also wrote another one that seems to be more about local oval track racing, The Car Was the One.

The movie he refers to is multi-Oscar winning musical 'West Side Story' (1961) which is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet. If you've not seen the movie its a masterpiece that's well worth a watch. Just a bit of trivia.... It was banned in the UK for a number of years because it dealt with the existance of gangs in New York and all the subsequent violence.

If you haven't heard the song, "There's a Place For Us", from West Side Story, you might be missing some of the weight of the message Mark Knopfler is trying to convey. If you do give it a listen, go in prepared. There are few songs that shred heartstrings as thoroughly. Personally, I can't hear it without reliving every point of regret sewn into my past. I can't listen to it again. I just don't have that level of remorse left in the tank.

If I ever tell a woman I'll be with her forever, I'll mean it. I don't joke about things like that. Unfortunately, here in the west, love, as a romantic concept, is pretty much dead. It's been replaced with Tinder and the hookup culture, and us old-fashioned romantic fools are regarded as "clingy" and prudish. It would be nice to think that it's still possible to find someone who values courtship, romance and loyalty. But I've yet to meet someone else like that, and I'm 42, so I'm not holding my breath. I probably should've been born at the time of Romeo and Juliet.
