I LOVE this show; many of these songs from my favourite Dire Straits album, *Communique*. Most beautiful guitar tone ever. Bravissimo to you, listening to this concert. No other reactor seems to have the interest in seeing this genius perform when his band were still just the most talented pub band in all of Europe-before they became a giant, bloated 6- or 7-piece act that were no longer just a rock band; they had become a corporate circus act. English author Douglas Adams once described Mark’s guitar tone as the sound of angels singing…after they’d stayed out a little too late on a Saturday night.

If you're wondering about the lyrics to this song, the Cutty Sark is a famous 19th clipper ship, one of the fastest of it's day, that is now Grade 1 listed and a tourist attraction in the Greenwich area of London. The Gypsy Moth IV is a 20th century ship modelled on clippers like the Cutty Sark. It was commissioned by Sir Francis Chichester specifically for him to sail single-handed around the globe, racing against the times set by those old 19th clipper ships. At the time Mark Knopfler wrote this song both ships were in dry dock in Greenwich near to the Old Royal Naval College. So "The mother and her baby and the college of war in the concrete graves" are the Cutty Sark, Gypsy Moth IV, the naval college and the dry dock respectively. The Gypsy Moth was in a poor state back then, hence Mark's description of her being "silent in pain". The "single-handed sailor" is a reference to Sir Francis.

Another great song from Mark Knopfler, this is the original lineup of the band that would go on to conquer the world. The whole of this concert is great.

Mark really casts an almost magical spell...and I've been under it since 1978, lol. It's a pleasure to watch your continuing journey as you both fall deeper under it, too. :) I've never seen this particular live video before, but I think his gorgeous guitar work here may surpass the studio version. Early Dire Straits had such a clean, lean sound. "Wild West End" is another wonderful song from this era that you might enjoy.

Great reaction again to an absolutely wonderful song of "early" Dire Straits! Thank you for this, so honest and with the right amount of emotion (I can see it in your faces ;-) ). Again, I was young at that time and those songs really changed my life. Of course also the later ones, and the ones Mark did as a solo artist. If you like this, check out their first album... Best regards from Switzerland, merry christmas and a happy new year. Please keep on going! Linus

This is the original DS band members. With Mark & David Knopfler (yellow t-shirt), Pick Withers in drums and the only member that stayed till the end (the Calling Elvis concert reaction) John Elisley in bass guitar. Too bad David left after 2 & 1/2 albums cause their chemistry was unreal. Check out the song that got me hooked on Dire straits, Wild west end.

With Dire Straits you can't go wrong, it's not really blues but the live performances was always unique and impro, i remember a concert in the roman arena of Nîmes in the 90s it was raining so we though it gonna be shit but they played until 3 in the morning maybe because they loved the acoustic, don't know but it was one of my favorit concert of all time.

Great song, from the Master! One of my favorites. But do yourself a favour - listen to the studio versions first, so much clearer in audio quality. This is muddy and confused sounding. Live recordings are great for the immediate visual dynamics but generally limited in audio quality.

Thank you for this reaction! I love all of Dire Straits music, but I probably listen to the songs from their first two albums the most. In this short clip from an interview at the same concert the band talks about not really having any desire to get bigger - funny now that we know just how successful and massive they became in the 80s! kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWnEkHhsp8-ahJY
