Lyrics:
i seen a girl on a one way corridor
stealing down a wrong way street
for all the world like an urban toreador
she had wheels on on her feet
well the cars do the usual dances
same old cruise and the kerbside crawl
but the rollergirl she’s taking chances
they just love to see her take them all
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
hallelujah here she comes queen rollerball
enchante what can i say don’t care at all
you know she used to have to wait around
she used to be the lonely one
but now that she can skate around town
she’s the only one
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
she gets rock n roll a rock n roll station
and a rock n roll dream
she’s making movies on location
she don’t know what it means
but the music make her wanna be the story
and the story was whatever was the song what it was
rollergirl don’t worry
d.j. play the movies all night long
she tortures taxi drivers just for fun
she like to read their lips
says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son
i swear she let a big truck graze her hip
she got her own world in the city
you can’t intrude on her
she got her own world in the city
cos the city’s been so rude to her
come slippin and a slidin
life’s rollerball
slippin and a slidin
skateaway that’s all
shala shalay hey hey skateaway
she’s singing shala shalay hey hey
skateaway

Breaker Breaker Hello April 12! Stretched out like this [here on April 30th (2024)], I can see and hear you clearly. From the distance where I’m at, you look like you’re down a one-way corridor with countless doors on either side of it. There’s a music in this interstitial space. And Hallelujah! Here she comes, Queen Rollerball. She’s making movies on location, and the DJ plays the movies, so she imagines us, you and me, “All night long. All night long.” Over and out!

When I first heard Sultans of Swing over 40 years ago I didn't think it possible for anyone to change chords so quickly and effortlessly so in 1982 I went to see Dire Straits at the Deeside Leisure Centre in north Wales with a pal of mine to see if the magic could be produced live. "Skateaway" is a perfectly composed song, the lyrics and especially Knopfler's singing guitar work capture the feeling of youthful joy and movement. The fact that he makes it about a "Roller girl" instead of just any skater also makes it meaningful because young ladies of that generation were really coming into their own and this song celebrates them and their new found freedoms. I was 21 when this song and video came out and I admit I cried real tears when I learned that Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the Rollergirl had passed away. But her beautiful performance will live on and inspire young girls for as long as they have dreams and the "Skateaway" video to enjoy.

I was in my early twenties when this came out and I still remember how Mark knopfler's guitar works stood out because it was so different/unique sounding than other bands. Of course we only had radio and MTV (back then MTV played music 24/7) to hear music with other than our home and car stereos. Mostly vinyl and cassettes at that time. A friend of mine would buy an album then record it to cassette and put the album away so as not to wear out his album.

I seen a girl on a one way corridor Stealing down a wrong way street For all the world like an urban toreador She had wheels on on her feet Well the cars do the usual dances Same old cruise and the kerbside crawl But the roller girl she's taking chances They just love to see her take them all No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd In her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud Hallelujah here she comes queen roller ball Enchante what can I say don't care at all You know she used to have to wait around She used to be the lonely one But now that she can skate around town She's the only one No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd In her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud She gets rock n roll a rock n roll station And a rock n roll dream She's making movies on location She don't know what it means But the music make her want to be the story And the story was whatever was the song what it was Roller girl don't worry D.j. play the movies all night long She tortures taxi drivers just for fun She like to read their lips Says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son I swear she let a big truck grease her hip She got her own world in the city You can't intrude on her She got her own world in the city 'cause the city's benn so rude to her No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd In her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud She gets rock n roll a rock n roll station And a rock n roll dream She's making movies on location She don't know what it means But the music make her want to be the story And the story was whatever was the song what it was Roller girl don't worry D.j. play the movies all night long Come slipping and sliding Life's roller ball Slipping and a sliding Skate away that's all Shala shalay hey hey skate away She's going singing shala shalay hey hey Skate away

What a exceptional song paired with a video that is a masterpiece! Silhouettes, perspective, camera angles, and story-telling all complement the music and lyrics. I wish videos like this were still made. Money for nothing is often cited as a great video but I think Skateaway towers over it in every way.

I agree. It's a beautiful video and it doesn't look like videos from it's time. By about '83 music videos came into their own (my opinion is that the Golden Age of music videos was '83-'86) but before then, they were kinda primitive. This really rises above its era. One thing I mentioned in another comment is that the music, itself, was so out of step with its time that for that very reason this video escaped aging badly. I think that's a good principle in general. If you want to make something that stands the test of time, don't stick your finger in the wind. Don't care about being number one. Money For Nothing WAS a number one. It was hot and trendy and what-not. Now it's a museum piece. Not Skateaway. All the good stuff is never trendy.

If by 'music', you mean 'popular' music, I'd say for roughly 1955-1990 , there was quite a bit of extraordinary popular music, but, for me, popular music has declined, for the most part, since then. I think the 80's were awesome, but it's hard to top the music and innovations of the sixties.
