Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

Often not appreciated is Knopfler's ability to tell a story. All his songs tell an amazing story. His artistry as a guitarist is undisputed but his talent as a poet is not often recognised. Great ballads like Telegraph Road, Brothers In Arms, Sailing To Philadelphia, Romeo & Juliet and even Money For Nothing illustrate Knopfler's powers of observation, and a capacity to put this into a magnificent package of notes and words. Listen closely to the lyrics - and if possible, read them from a lyrics score. This will add a new dimension to your appreciation of his great talent.

Oh I agree. In past 4months I've mentioned a time or two M.K. artistry as a poet and storyteller. You elaborated beautifully. And you are the first I've seen(hundreds of reviews and comments)to mention Sailing to Philadelphia,my favorite song and album. But it's almost like no one else ever of it. I saw MK in an interview recently. I was so shocked til I realized it's been about 50 years! I'm an old lady and he is an old man. What a splendid old man! Three piece suit, kind face and cultured manners. No sign of excessive living. He conversed so easily, not one awkward moment in a very long interview and was quite funny. I guess I am still a fan. The reason for the interview was an event at Sotheby's where he auctioned off part of his guitar collection and gave 11 million $ to charity. GOD bless you Mr.Knopfler.

The studio version of "Sultans of Swing" was Dire Straits first single from their first album in 1978 and was a hit. This 1983 "Alchemy Live" take is a longer version and with mostly different personnel than the original band. They had just ended a tour so the band was really tight and they did two concerts in London that were recorded and released the next year on an "Alchemy Live" album. The concert video was released a few years later.

Knopfler pronounced Nofler silent K & P. You would never have heard this song anywhere else especially not on a TV commercial. If you read all the lyrics Mark writes, he is a poet. This song came out like a bullet from a gun, in I think 1977 or 1978. It was immediately a hit because the music & Mark's guitar sound was so unique. This concert was the last 2 of the 1983 Love Over Gold tour. It was at the London Odeon the very last two concerts filmed for the aLCHEMY CD & Blu-ray concert. The whole concert captured onto film for posterity was magic. I saw them live in 1983 & they can reproduce live their music better live than on their albums. Now that says much. As much as Mark is a Virtuoso, he surrounds himself with master musicians. That says much about MK.

Another song from this amazing concert is Telegraph Road. It was written when Dire Straits was traveling from one concert venue to another along Telegraph Road (US Highway #24) in Michigan. Telegraph Road runs north and south 70 miles right along the Detroit border. Mark had a conversation with the bus driver about the history of Detroit and then he wrote this song. It is basically the story of Detroit but could easily be adapted to any large city that was once prosperous but has now fallen into blight and decay. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2K6oWV3iNasrqsfeature=shared Enjoy!

I don’t think that anyone pointed this out, but Mark Knopfler doesn’t use a pick, which is rather unusual except for bass players. He is definitely one of the all time great guitarists. There’s a live version of him playing I Want My MTV, in a tribute concert for Monserrat, he’s much older but it’s outstanding. He wrote that after hearing some employees in an appliance store who had a demo TV turned to MTV. What makes that performance remarkable is his guests, Phil Collins on drums, Sting singing backing vocals and Eric Clapton on rhythm guitar. It’s definitely worth watching.

Saeed, my 13 year old grandson is a drummer. He started at the age of 4. His drum instructor would just jam with him for like 10 mins. of his lessons. Afterwards, Kyler would say to him, "man, my forearms are killing me"! He told him that practicing every single day will help to build up that stamina and strength in his arms and legs. It's a vicious workout to be a drummer. Neal Peart and Tommy Lee are my favorite drummers. THIS performance was out of this 🌍! That drummer was amazing!! 🌍🥁🎶🎸

I knew they were good, but they were way above my expectations. Terry Williams on the drums was the star for me, absolutely up there with the best you can see live. There is a story that his father was there for the first time and that made him play harder, its more of an urban myth, he always played like that! A similar urban legend to the time a reporter asked Angus Young from AC/DC what it is like being one of the best guitarists in the world. Angus in this urban legend replied with 'I wouldn't know, I'm not even the best guitarist in the band'. He then apparently mentioned that Malcolm could play all of his parts, but he couldn't play everything that Malcolm could. Although one thing isn't an urban legend to me, I still think Malcom Young was one of the best rhythm guitarists of all time.

I am forever entertained watching young people seeing Dire Straits live for the first time. I am sorry to say young people will never experience this sort of talent live ever. Music has much changed. Everything is different in the 21st century. MK is a poet if you read the lyrics to his music, you will hear better what he is actually saying. Personally, I think Mark is the best guitarist ever because like Hendrix he is so unique. He is a left-handed man playing right-handed & not using a guitar pick he is using his fingers. A neat trick but it makes sense because all the heavy lifting is on his left hand. Rules are made to be broken as did Ludwig Van Beethoven so many years ago. MK too would have been a teacher's worst nightmare, but he did what he wanted all the same. Rules, what music rules are there? None. Saeed, you have never heard this music sound in a movie, or a TV add. The way MK arranges the music is simply brilliant. You have just seen one song of one of the most amazing live performances ever filmed live in 1983 but this song was released in 1978. But Saeed I love to see & hear your reaction xoxo I saw them live so I know how blown away I was leaving the concert. There are no fancy costumes or gimmicks just pure musical genius. And these musicians are having such a great time & it shows. xoxo Enjoy & watch the rest of the concert. The second to last song was the keyboard players time to go wild with so much energy. This whole 90-minute concert is a must have & see forever, now 41 years ago. x

I saw DS on this tour (Alchemy Live) as a 19 year old kid. My mates and I came out drained, and drenched with sweat from the pure electricity they were putting out. In the pocket ALL NIGHT. 😮💨🤘🏼✌🏼

Don't be ashamed. There's so much really good music from the 50s, 60s and 70s to listen to - and enjoy

Yeees, Dire Straits. Legends ❤ Mark Knopfler is amazing. In my twenties I used to be up until midnight just to hear his Going home at the beginning of night program of my favourite radio station 😂

Awesome! Thanks for sharing that. There was no instant music streaming. Special moments!

Listen to the original. You'll see why it's easy to love them both. This is one live version that did homage to the original without screwing it up. 😊

He did a song for a movie, The Princess Bride. This performance made me love a song I already just liked. My favorites of his are Romeo and Juliet, and Skateaway.
