Mark Knopfler is a guitarist’s guitarist. Brilliant finger picking style that is his own.

Yep. When it comes to purely instrumental compositions, Joe Satriani is my fave, but I admire a lot of guitarists out there, and Knopfler for me will always be "Mark The Long Thumb"😄 This song is an evergreen; as I'm from Poland I know kids from polish music schools, for whom it was a point of honor, learning to play "Sultans Of Swing" or "Brothers In Arms".

A friend gave me his Walkman and said that I must hear this. It blew my mind! I bought the double cassette and wouldn’t stop listening to the concert. Then, with the little money I had, I bought their other cassettes. Then Brothers in Arms came out and the Dire Straits came to Israel for three concerts in 1985. I couldn’t go 😢. I have all of their recordings and all of Mark Knopflers solo recordings. 34 years later, I fulfilled my dream and saw Mark live in Budapest in 2019 and sat with my wife in the first row😀

The concert was in 1983 in London. The fashion was very 80s, including the unstructured jackets with the sleeves pushed up and the sweatbands. Dire Straits was a British band, but the rhythm guitarist was American. The lead guitarist, Mark Knopfler, is still working at the age of 74 and released a new album in April 2024.

Billy Joel started, sometime in the 2000s, not selling tickets to the front rows of his concerts, because they were usually bought by scalpers and sold to rich people or companies, and those folks were there to be seen, not for the music. Once the concert was about to begin, his people would then go out to the cheap seats and find music lovers to be invited up to the front row for the concert.

One of the very greatest guitarist of all time and criminally underrated by music journalists. The usual lists are often topped by people that play relentlessly hard, fast and loud, but jamming so many notes together it sometimes sounds more like a technical exercise than a song. Knopflers playing is deceptively technical with a control of tempo and volume that is second to none and every note feels so deliberate. It's like between his lyrics the guitar also has a voice and something it wants to say. Telegraph Road and Brothers in Arms are a couple other famous examples of his great "duets" with his guitars.
@davebooth584710 ай бұрын
I was there. I was somewhere ourt in that crowd. And I'm a singer and guitarist. Mark tore the fucking place down for the entirety of that concert. Terry, what can I say? He was locked in to the "pocket" of every cut. These videos where you see him singing along with every solo to feel it, to ride the wave of the song and pass that along to the rest of the band... That's the kind of drummer you want behind you when you're standing up front and just giving it.

My parents had most of this concert on cassette tape. It was the soundtrack to every long car journey I had as a child (with a bit of Fleetwood Mac, Kate Moss etc. mixed in). Even before I could talk this music was ingrained into me, the guitar solos still evoke memories of driving through the Scottish Highlands, and I couldn't be more grateful for that. Funny thing is, I'm 34 and the studio versions of most of these songs still sound off to me, even now. It's awesome to see people react with such joy and enthusiasm to something I've loved my entire life. Thank you, gentlemen!
