I used to go to the Spanish City when I was young and this song brings back amazing memories. It captures the noise, excitement and even the smells for me. The story is also perfect. I listen to it almost every day, and have done since the day it was released (at full volume and often accompanied by my appalling singing) and I loved listening and hearing and seeing your reaction. I can see as you watch that you both truly appreciate music and also lyrics. A true appreciation of both is what music by Dire Straits deserves. I'd definitely recommend Telegraph Road should you wish to feature another Dire Straits track.

The lines in the song "From Cullercoats and Whiley Bay" 2 seaside towns just a few miles north of the river Tyne and up the coast from my home town of South Shields. Spanish city referres to an old fairground which is long gone and was never as glamourous as the song depicts when it was there lol. Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow but grew up in Newcastle Upon Tyne and there are a lot of references to the Tyneside area in his Dire Straits and solo songs. Hope you guys are keeping well.

To add to Lee's info, although the fairground is gone the lyrics 'Girl it looks so pretty to me, just like it always did. Like the Spanish City to me, when we were kids.' are now embedded into the paving outside the entrance to the redeveloped site. There's a documentary series called Brian Johnson's A Life On The Road with the ACDC frontman interviewing various musicians, which includes an episode with Mark Knopfler. They both grew up in the same area and they visit the Spanish City and discuss their memories of it and this song in particular. It's worth catching if you can.

This song is about a tacky sea side resort where you have a Travelling fair that has Waltzers, Tunnels of Love and Twisting Babies and Cake Walks that are all fair ground rides in the UK. all driven by truck mounted diesel Engines to supply the power. Whitley Bay is a resort near Newcastle and the Spanish City is a well known theme park full of these rides in Whitley Bay. They are all dying now as demand has fallen. Its cheaper to go abroad now than stay at home. This is a fair ground romance just for one night I love it. In the roar of dust and diesel

This is just another example of Mark's story telling. Besides being this amazing guitarist, he is also a phantastic storyteller. You can hear that in most of the Dire Straits songs. What is interesting is that some of the songs are from a first person perspective, like this one, where you don't know if it's based on Mark's personal experience or he is just taking on a character and others like Sultans of Swing are told from an outside perspective, based on a simple observation, trying to tell the story that is behind of what Mark saw, or at least what could be the story in Mark's imagination.

number one on the top 10 dire Straits of my list. I knew as I got older appreciating music and I would pull out making movies skateaway was the big MTV hit. with the roller skating and everything else back in the early MTV days. but that piano I said to myself _you know that sounds like Bruce Springsteen's pianist professor Roy Bitain and Trey sure enough it is_ he just has a distinct sound if you're a fan of the boss and you hear that piano and you just almost like only one person has that sound..the back Mark enlisted not only Roy for the keyboards on the albumby the time also after darkness on the edge of town going into the river he also enlisted legendary producer Jimmy iovine..that's the reason why I'm making movies has such a great sound because Mark working with Jimmy they just created something fantastic just a little over 8 minutes of greatness what a fantastic song that awesome finger-picking of Mark Knopfler just awesome. those classic dire Straits story songs with nice interludes the Spanish City though he refers to is a place where he grew up and it was like a sort of a boardwalk back in the day that we have out in Jersey similar to that it was like a place it got pretty run down by the time this song it came out but it had lots of history.. similar to a Coney Island always like the outros which made it so much more really classy when you overlayed and overdubed guitar layers on top of each other.but like a lot of great songs playing them live some came out excellent but sometimes you have to improvise like ZZ top and rushwood when you have three or four or five different layers sometimes 10 + layered guitars and you're trying to do it on stage with three people.. 10.0 what do you have to remember to the ones that only know the Walk of Life and money forto categorize dire Straits they weren't Rock and they weren't classic rock at the time they were known as adult Rock. a lot of the kids might have dug it but didn't quite get the story or the subject of the songs adults did..there was a lot of that from about 1977 right on up to about 1987 a good ten solid years of what we called adult rock some actually called an aor adult-oriented Rock and substations would only play that kind of music.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Ha ha. I meant to say we both lived in the same town in the North East of England. Cullercoats (a small fishing village, where, you might be interested to know, the American artist Winslow Homer lived and painted in the 19th century) and Whitley Bay (where the Spanish City amusement park was) are just down the coast.

This is my favourite dire straits song. The live versions are better though IMHO. The outro almost makes me cry. Mark really knows how to improvise.

Can't believe you never listened about this song. Anyway Mark Knopfler is a virtuoso and one of the most iconic guitar player

Yes he is fantastic! And as I always explain not a hard thing to figure we haven't heard the song, Trey wasn't born and I was very very young. Thanks for watching

His solos are short cause he intentionally keeps it short. There's an interview about him saying how to keep it short n how some guitars don't know where to stop. He's not agreedy guitarist, he plays whatever nhowever the song demands.

It is a beautiful technique for sure!

I definitely like Sultans of Swing better. That guitar riff in the song is so iconic.

Agreed. Hard to beat Sultans. Thanks for watching Jason!

Rarely has there been a more aptly titled album than Making Movies. Each song is a storyscape. Epic songwriting. Masterful playing. A masterpiece. I'd advise to skip any more song reactions from this one and just do the album.

May very well do that. Thanks Scott!

The live versions of Dire Straits tracks are far better by the way. Try Telegraph Road live AlChemy tour
