Met John in the mid 80's at the height of his success. Was his golf caddy at Sunningdale golf club for a day, charity event. Very tall man, well over 6 feet, excellent golfer. It was summer, and John was saying he had just met Clapton and other stars a week or two before, while playing at a festival. He was so happy about meeting up with these people as they don't meet often except at festivals on the same bill (that was the impression I got). These musicians are a true band of brothers. Very polite man. He did not say a word about DS or himself, and I didn't ask, he was just so happy to have met his heros/friends again, just like a fan, and still so happy about it a week or two later. Said it like it was the best day of his life so far, all these musos together backstage, on a summers day in beautiful England. And he paid me 75 quid. Normal caddy fee was 50 quid. Probably for keeping my gob shut and just doing my job.

Did you say to him, 'WOW 75 quid, that's money for nothing' ?

Great interview. Let me say, Australia loves John too. Dire Straits and John as a solo artist are much loved Down Under.

What I would ask is whether the members of Dire Straits besides Mark were on salary or whether it was a profit-sharing arrangement; and, if the latter, among exactly whom and what the split was.

John Illsley was the perfect bassist to complement Mark Knopfler's guitar style. MK solo is good, but, I hear MK's solo works, the bass is never quite right. MK never should have dissolved Dire Straits, or somehow kept John on for the solo works

Dire Straits would give you an album of great and diverse songs. MK solo albums ... two good songs and squeak-byer.

Yeah we get old with time! Time tends to make people old :) Coming from an atheist, thank the Devil that John Illsley hasn't croaked yet. The world of music will lose a very endearing human being when this man leaves this world, and I hope to hell that it doesn't happen in my lifetime. He's a lot older than me but I would prefer to leave this world with John Illsley still alive in it.

Consumers are hugely lazy and ignorant. They dont go out of their way to discover culture, they expect it shovelled to them by youtube or Spotify etc. Artists *can* avoid scoundrels like Spotify, but listeners wont go anywhere else 😕

Sorry in the broader sense religion drives people apart. Fine within the same religion but other than that just can’t agree with John.
