Feb 1979 I was not quite 17 years old, I see a young 30 y/o? Mark Knopfler playing one of my all time favourite songs. I think to myself, how lucky were we to have the talented musos we had growing up? Then I remember, I never grew up, just got a little wiser! Rock on folks and enjoy the gift they give us that we all share. Cheers!

I was 18 andc3 months in June '79 for The Hammersmith Odeon gig,my first of 3 Dire Straits gigs,was a great night. Was actually on the guest list,as the brother of my music teacher,made the kit Pick was playing. Also at last ever London show June '92 at Earl's Court. Wonderful times,great band.

BBC (UK) John Peel played the Sultans of Swing EP every night on his as the final 10pm- 12am song back in 1978 before the 1st album came out. It got into my 15 yr old Classic Rock brain. Pick Withers was the man and I always admired his playing

For me this will always be _the_ definitive Dire Straits lineup. The larger lineups that played the giant arenas sounded great, but this group roster played intimate, smaller shows perfectly. This was my first impression of Dire Straits, and it remains my favorite.

Good old Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, Pick Withers and John Illsley.
@BigBri550 Жыл бұрын
@@alexfinns6162 I kind of regard Dire Straits as the English CCR. Their music was different, but they struck the same vein: each a four-piece guitar band with a distinctive chemistry, and a lead guitarist-singer who also provided their material and musical direction.

To me, their first album is their most flawless album. No frills, just good and simple. It's the kind of stuff Mark is doing lately. I love those 80's albums so much, but nothing beats the amount of air in the tracks of the first 2 albums. Mark filled up a lot of that space with some of the greatest guitar playing ever.

One important thing was Pick Withers. His playing in drums is brilliant!

Very well said. I feel the same. Water of Love and Six Blade Knife are two of my favorites. & Down To The Waterline. I have been with them since the very beginning. Their first album was their best. "Gonna carry that water of love to me..."

Perfectly said ! Loved the first 2 albums . Making Movies was awesome too . But yes , that first album , especially the guitar work was pure genius . Genius . I've seen Dire Straights and Mark Knopfler solo . He makes the guitar a part of his soul , it's his sound that is so unique . My favorite guitarist ever . No question .

WATER OF LOVE High and dry in the long hot day Lost and lonely every way Got the flats all around me sky up above I need a little water of love I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain Crying out for some soothing rain I believe I have taken enough I need a little water of love Water of love deep in the ground No water here to be found Some day baby when the river runs free It'll carry that water of love to me There's bird up in a tree sitting up high Waiting for me to die If I don't get some water soon I'll be dead and gone in the atternoon Once I had a woman I could call my own Once I had a woman now my woman is gone Once there was a river now there's a stone You know it's evil when you're living alone

The entire band were killing it back then: John Illsley on bass, Pick Withers on drums, and David Knopfler on second guitar. As brilliant a leader as Mark K. was, every front-man needs a crack band behind him if he wants to go places. And these guys were a crack band; a total groove machine. Tight as can be, right in the pocket. Tasteful as can be but with plenty of passion. Almost thirty years on, I'm still bummed Dire Straits broke up...
@kevinmcdonald64772 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 David definitely had a jealousy issue with his brother. I believe PicI believe Pick left because he thought the group was getting too loud. He was more comfortable with stripped down playing and the music not being overly orchestrated. He was probably right because Mark has gone back to a much subtler style since the band completely broke up. I believe Illsley still worked sometimes with Mark after Dire Straits ended.
