Direct Seeding Vegetables Through Plastic

The large seed items, mainly cucurbits and beans, are directly seeded out in the field. The viners can grow too fast for transplanting, and they don't make the transition from pot to soil well. We missed seeing most of the vegetables being planted, but there's always next season.

I sure wish we had this when I was a young lad. My uncle made the kids plant all the seeds by had. He keep sticks on the fence that he would give us for proper spacing. While all the adults stood there drinking beer and watching us. Lol

That hand seeder is really neat! I know you said you don't need a transplanter right now, but someday your operation may grow and you might decide to get one. Our water wheel transplanter doesn't care what size plant you are planting. It just makes a hole and fills it with water, then whoever is riding puts the plant in the hole. I did make a video this year about planting pumpkins if you were interested in seeing our setup. I had to laugh because I actually saw a rock in your field lol

That plastic is a lifesaver when it comes to controlling weeds. No doubt it well worth the expense.

No, the rates are high, and they prefer acres of a single crop rather than 1200 tomato plants, 300 peppers, 300 cabbage etc ...

Yes, most vegetables don't want to be deep, an inch at most.

Rain doesn't go away. I'll shut up and be happy when there's a drought. On target for 2024 looking back at our history of 88, 99, and 2012.
