When sowing carrots I use an old white T-shirt to cover them when germinating. The T-shirt keeps the soil moist and they get light. I find they germinate quicker than any other method I’ve used.

Hi Kim, 100F in the shade again today, south of Sylacauga, AL in the country. The area is still considered as a part Sylacauga, but well outside of the city limits. I live closer to Weogufka, AL, pop 256. Weogufka is also considred as a part of Sylacauga. Yeah, I live way out in the boonies. It looks like I'll get a break from the heat starting Tuesday. Yeah! The trend looks like it may be okay for planting some veggies. I'll be planting at the outside edge of the temperature range-the mid 80s, so I'll overseed a bit to guarantee germination, I'll start with Swiss Chard, Brunswich Cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower, Pak Choi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, turnips, tatsoi, komatsuna, and maybe Nappa Cabbage. I'll have to wait a bit, hopefully only a week or two, to sow seeds for carrots, beets, and radish. It will be October before it is cool enough to get started with garlic and sow seeds for parsnips. I probably won't plant lettuce. It can take a frost, but not a hard freeze. If I were to plant it, I'd have to wait two more weeks before the weather cools enough. The first freeze hits mid November. I may get a few leaves before it does, but that is about it. Everything else is more resiliant, and can stand drops in temperature down into the low 20s, or colder. I have a lot of bare dirt, so can't wait to get my fall gaden going.

Wow, it sounds like you’re gearing up for a fantastic fall garden! It’s great that you’re getting a break from that intense heat soon-100°F in the shade is no joke! It’s always a challenge to time planting just right with the weather, but it looks like you’ve got a solid plan in place. Your veggie choices sound perfect for the cooler weather that’s hopefully on its way. Overseeding is a smart move, especially with the temperatures being on the edge of ideal for germination. Once the heat breaks, those seeds should do just fine. As for lettuce, you’re right-it’s a bit more sensitive. If you do decide to plant some, you might be able to sneak in a quick harvest before the first freeze. But focusing on those hardier veggies like Swiss chard, cabbage, and brassicas is a great call since they’ll be more resilient to the cold. I bet your garden is going to be lush and full of life once the weather cooperates. Here’s to a bountiful fall harvest and enjoying some cooler days ahead! 🌱🥕 CK

Good job! I need to try kohlrabi again this Fall. It didn’t work too well this Spring. My Grandpa loved it and I will try to grow some in honor of him 👊🏻🌻👊🏻

That sounds like a beautiful tribute to your Grandpa! Kohlrabi can be a bit finicky, but fall is a great time to give it another shot. Cooler weather might just be the key to success this time around.❤️CK

Thank you Kim. I'm going to plant in Oct here in Florida, lettuce, beets, broccoli, cabbage , and carrots all in grow bag's. Can't wait. I have 3 100 gallon grow bag's and a lot of smaller one's.
@CaliKim292 ай бұрын
That sounds like an exciting plan! Those 100-gallon grow bags are going to give your veggies plenty of room to spread their roots and thrive. October is a great time to start those cool-weather crops in Florida, and it’s so fun to grow in bags because you can easily move them around if needed. I can’t wait to hear how everything grows! Happy planting! 🌿🥕🥬 CK

Thank you for the tip about shade cloth for carrots! 🥕 I’ve tried growing them so many times, and the most I’ve success I’ve had so far is just getting them to actually germinate this year, by putting cardboard over them. But our summer in Northern Utah was so blasted hot, they all died. I’m going to try them one more time this year, with the shade cloth, but I think I’m going to have to wait longer. Temps here are still in the upper 80s.
@CaliKim292 ай бұрын
Hi Kristina! You’re welcome! Carrots can definitely be a bit tricky, especially in the heat. It sounds like you’re on the right track with using shade cloth-it really helps keep the soil cool and moist for those delicate seedlings. Waiting for the temps to drop a bit more should give you a better shot at success this time around. Hang in there, and I’m sure you’ll get a great carrot harvest soon! 🥕🌱 CK

He’s so good at keeping an eye on everything-I’m sure he’d love a big hug from you! 😊 Kohlrabi is such a fun veggie to grow; I’m so glad you’re giving it a try. It’s perfect for container gardening, especially as we head into the cooler months. Getting those containers ready now is a great idea! Question: here in SoCal we are still having heat. Are you just showing the planting as an example or do you think us socal gardeners can plant these now?
@CaliKim29Ай бұрын
Wait until it's consistently 75 degrees or under. I do suggest you re-watch the video and just soak it in...listen for key words like Southern Gardeners, (that's us Californians)...perk up when you hear those words and dial in. Your doing great, Effsharp. One step at a time, I"m here for you. CK

I love your videos I know your in Cali I'm on the east coast so our weather is different but I struggle growing winter crops especially broccoli abd cabbage . Any ideas to help . Or why 2 big problems are bugs and they don't get that big .
@CaliKim292 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Growing winter crops like broccoli and cabbage can be challenging, especially with pests and size issues. Here are some tips to help: Plant Early Enough: Start your seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your first expected frost, then transplant them outside in late summer or early fall. This gives them enough time to mature before it gets too cold. Choose the Right Varieties: Some varieties are better suited to cooler climates and can handle frost better, which can help them grow larger. Use Row Covers: Cover your plants with lightweight fabric to keep out pests like cabbage worms and aphids. Natural Predators: Encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs and lacewings that eat common garden pests. Neem Oil or Insecticidal Soap: These can help manage pests without harming your plants. Rich Soil: Broccoli and cabbage need nutrient-rich soil. Make sure to amend your soil with compost or a balanced fertilizer before planting. Regular Feeding: Continue feeding with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer every few weeks to support leaf growth. Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Mulch can help retain moisture and keep the soil temperature stable. Give Them Room: Plant your seedlings with enough space (about 18-24 inches apart) to allow them to grow larger without competing for nutrients. By focusing on these areas, you should see improvement in both pest control and plant size for your winter crops! Hope this helps!!! CK. Let me know!!!
