I would explain it like a husband and wife bringing up their child. The control changes but the vision is the same.

I really love your videos but as a director, the first thing I noticed was that it looks like you have a crazy, frizzy Afro because you're standing in front of that dried plant...

Haha! Damn, this is why Directors are the ones in charge on set!

So I will tell you that I am in pre- production right now. I have done everything. Created the story, wrote the script, found the locations, raised the money, casted the actors, got the equipment, uniforms, costumes, got the crew together, cars, horses, businesses, caterer, etc. I had one director who filmed for me in another country, just some short scenes, the rest will be shot here. But that director was pushing his authority around, changing the script completely, and changing the vision of the film. We are still friends, but we just couldn't go forward. In the end, they wanted way more money then agreed upon. So you have to be very careful who you work with. Now, I have another director (DP), who is into the story and vision and has done over 100 films (directing). But I will be co-directing, coordinating the stunts, acting, etc. Yes, not easy, but it can be done, especially when you have put in all of the work, found the money, resources, wrote the script, etc. I am the one paying everyone, makeup person, lighting, cameraman, sound crew, actors, etc. So it is a very touchy subject. But can be done. For me the vision must stay true. If you don't have a crew that is positive, believes in the project and can't work together, than maybe they can work on the next project. Simple. In this case, I am in charge and I open to suggestions from the crew and other actors, and you have to be able to bend just a bit. But never compromise your vision. If you have a lot of people who believe in the script, the vision, the project, than it can be made. Also, when you don't have others to rely on and you wind up doing all of the work like I did, it becomes more personal. We will be shooting soon. No drama on the set, just people looking at the big picture and making it come out great for everyone involved. Sometimes you just have to believe in yourself also when others don't. This business is not easy for everyone. Period. But you have to stay true to yourself and your vision as an independent filmmaker.
