Thanks so much for this video. Do you have a sales agent that you recommend for self distribution? Thanks for this video!

there are some point that is not clear to me about the process of distribution of a movie let's take a practical example: 1 I have a new film production and distribution company or just distribution, but I don't have any films to distribute yet because my company Is young, how make myself known to theaters? 2 How a movie arrive on the theatre? Taking into account that only in USA there are hundreds of theaters and it seems rather difficult to contact them all one by one, if I want distribute the movie in all world all is more difficult. How usually a distributor done? 3 A distributor always screens all the films it deals with in the same sales?

Thanks. I'm about to attend AFM with the goal of raising some finance for my next feature. A potential funder has asked me for a finance plan before our meeting, so this video was very helpful, and so was the template.

Alexi - I'm working with an author, very provocative non-fiction book about how she was forced into marriage at age 13, raped, difficult stuff to read honestly - how do we find a sales agent? I think the author might be willing finance a Proof of Concept, but we aren't filmmakers. Thanks for this video! Very helpful!!

Hi Alexi, love the content (email and videos). Question about financing, especially for those without a track record. You've spoke before about not needed a concept trailer/film for distributors or investors, but what about for audience development? What are your thoughts on using a proof of concept trailer or short to build an audience for your film early on? Especially using targeted marketing to try to identify who that audience is. Would having an existing fanbase (even if small) that represents a larger demographic help during financing or for getting the attention of sales agents/distributors? Specifically knowing who the primary audience is likely to be and how they generally consume film (theaters vs streaming, etc.). Is there any value add there?
@AlexiOuzasАй бұрын
There's immense value in knowing your audience and how they consume media, and ensuring your screenplay delivers for that audience. How you get there is up to you. Personally, I don't think you need a Proof of Concept to achieve that and usually, you identify and audience first and then market to them, not the other way around. A small fanbase won't help with financing, a big one can help but everything else still needs to be working (script, budget, cast).

This is a very common problem across creative fields where there’s a long period of development after initial inspiration, it’s essentially a kind of creative drift, it happens in bands for instance when they take too long to record an album, new ideas and influences start to come in and second guessing starts and you end up far from the original spark that set it off in the first place. Experienced writers and directors will often be well acquainted with this trap and know how to handle it, the good news is that stepping away and returning to it, to the original idea often will stimulate the original inspiration again, if the vision was compelling enough it should do this.

Excellent content, your transparency gives you a highly valuable edge over similar channels, and the plan sound great. I’ve found that the approach of filmmakers helping one another is a massive net benefit that creates a lifting of all boats effect. Zero sum thinking does the opposite and keeps people in isolated silos.

Crucial education, Alex. I have done some considerable reading and have been in the relevant Media Production classes at UTS in Sydney. But: now that I have big plans, you stimulate me to get going. With what you tell us, I believe I can devise a series of plans which will sector into the budget ahead of involving my EP and my major funding prospects. Mr Ouzas, Your advice is extremely sound.Your four case examples resound with my thoughts. My Exec to be was on the King's Speech. I would like to ask for a conversation about my up-and-coming epic. It is an extraordinary romance conducted on national scale. I am forming a creative group of 6 of the best known creative media figures. I believe the Indie approach can easily lead to a highly successful international production. The hero is little known outside the Outback and the world of horseriding. Within that world, his name is known to hundreds of thousands. However, pundits say that the history of cinema is full of unknown characters who become heroes owing to a first class production. My Older Actor will be Jack Thompson. My best known outside-US prospect is Hugh Jackman and is a prospect owing to his relations with the RM Williams company. Whereas I have a desire and a need to work on set with you for experience - and I am a Grad Cert Media Arts of UTS Sydney - I cannot tell when I can let up until the Draft is in the hands of the Editor. I have business in Melbourne which can be anytime. Do email [email protected] . I am convinced you will find yourself in a rattling conversation. RSVP, Alex. Another strategy that parallels #3: Find the next true up and comer, and approach them through a network of friends if possible, or directly. Some newer actors are on their way, and perhaps yours is the film that puts them over the top - like River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in Gus van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho.
@AlexiOuzas3 ай бұрын
Absolutely, this is a great strategy. If your film is good and their career takes off, you also have an evergreen film as people will want to continue to go back to that actor's earlier work

How I got Colman Domingo: invited him to participate in a public reading of the script. After that, asked. To my delight, he said yes - which made for a better more marketable movie, and me a better director (because he taught me so much). Now, that was a few years ago. Mine was one of the last indie films the man made. But the higher his star rose, the better it reflected on our film. Sometimes just ask. The worst they can do is say no. Or ignore you.

Konnichiwa Alexi, Greetings from Okinawa, Japan. How goes? Got a Q for you from this one, about it being our right as filmmakers to get a screening fee when our films play at festivals. I’ve come to find that some festivals do not offer screening fees to the filmmakers. Have you found festivals saying that films that are in competition are not offered screening fees?
@AlexiOuzas3 ай бұрын
It differs from festival to festival. The key is to always ask if they offer a screening fee. In my experience, if you ask they will tell you. But if you don't ask, they don't tell you either way.
