Tips, tricks and hints with the new AT&T Directv menus / guides. This is a how to guide to help you either get more info from your system or clear up slow issues that are showing up from the new guide that DTV recently released. Many folks are complaining of slowness with the guide and menus. The video shows you how to improve speed and clear up some issues you might be experiencing on the system.
CLEARMYBOX 2 (There is a space before the two) This search can be used double re-boot and will clean up software and guide data.
CLEARMYBOX This search will remove more from your box and any history. Each clear does not delete any recordings or settings.
Both are close the the same, so start with "Clearmybox 2"
To get to the diagnostic menu hold the "Select" button down for 15 seconds and another menu will popup. This menu will give you info about status of the HR / Client / Video Bridge etc. Very useful if you are having any issues. Also you can see what firmware version you are on, if it's outdated or the old GUI you can force an update.

Also after you either update or get an update check your TV resolution settings. After an update it often resets back to only 720P. You must check all clients, each one will get reset when updates happen, not every time but often.
Missing on-demand or they do not return after an update (give it a few hours to a day first)
First test internet connectivity with DirecTV servers by doing a speed test. If the first 2 digits of the result code are 88, means you are connected. If the first 2 digits are 87 this would mean the receiver can access the internet but not DirecTV servers. If they can't connect to the servers, try rebooting your router and see if you get the same result. Post below if you can't get to code 88 when testing and I will try to help you.

@@TechFan How come I have a different older menu? Do I need to update a driver for Direct TV? How do I do that. Frankly, right now...my older Genie 2 is only giving me 480p despite the fact my TV is a one year old TCL R625 that handles 4K videos from youtube. I clicked on 1080p and de selected 480, 720p. The Genie 2 is defaulting to 480p? WTF?

@@jimbeam7160 You can force an update at anytime but I assume you are tuning into a HD channel. When you say older do you mean the really old all blue menu? The genie 2 should update on it's own, it's not that old compared to other models.

@@TechFan The menu on your video...is updated from mine. I don't have a 4k option for resolution, and I didn't sign up for DTV 4K. I got an update by resetting the bridge using the red button.....and unplugged it. Then I unplugged the smaller HDMI cabled box that connects to my TV and it takes a wireless signal from the bridge (don't know the correct names for these boxes). Is there any need for me to sign into the DTV account online to get an updated menu?

@@TechFan My client HDTV is showing 480i resolution.....like the box (small black box with HDMI connecting to TV that recieves the bridge signal) is not giving me 1020p? My Device is a C61W-700 (HDMI cable to TV). Is the problem with the bridge (connected with coaxial cable to dish). I am totally confused.

Very well done, informative video. I really liked the part about turning off the scrolling effects. The sluggishness has been driving me crazy. I'm still trying to figure out how to quickly get to the series manager. Once there, I can't find a way to change the record options on a series I've already set (I want to change all of my shows to keep until I delete them (not until disk is full). I also wish there was an easy way to see the on demand titles of network shows (CBS, ABC, etc). I've confirmed that there isn't a way to see air dates of recorded series before playing them. I've also confirmed that they got rid of the bookmark function which I found very handy (especially if you resume a program that fails to remember where you left off). Overall, the old guide was much easier to use and was FAR more functional. I also learned that Directv has been rolling this out for at least six months, so it amazes me they didn't bother to fix things as they rolled it out. But thanks so much for taking the time to give us some really handy information. VERY well done!

Thank you for the note as these videos take a load time to create. DTV actually beta tested with feedback from a test group for about a year but they didn't want to listen to them. Everything you are experiencing others are too however AT&T is now saying they will address some of the requests by summer, we will see.

Looks like DTV in the latest releases (1088) have removed the logos in the guide on the left. The good news is that the guide is much faster to scroll, the bad news is you have to read the tiny text for channel names and numbers. I have heard that AT&T is looking to better the menus and guide in the next few months, we will see if that comes true! The logos are still in the National release version 0X1037.

What a great video. Thanks. I just got the new upgraded menu and don't like it so any help I can get is helping making this change easier. Anyway to change the color of the menu from grey to black or to make the font size larger? Thanks again.

Sorry, you can't change any of that, DIrectv is not listening to the customer like us, I agree it stinks, I can't see it either that well. In the latest versions they make slight adjustments but the overall size and fonts are the same. I replied to you in the other video too. You can rollback to the old GUI but DTV will just roll you forward again. It make take a day it might take a week, not sure but your HR is now flagged to get the new GUI (menus). So honestly I do not suggest rolling back but rather take a few days or a week to get used to is. There are some things that are good beyond the guide being smaller. But again I agree with you 100% and felt the same for the first month but after the latest updates in January things have been fine. So give it a shot and thanks for posting.

I really like your video. I have a question: for some reason, 2 days ago, my DirectTV no longer has the HD color quality, meaning all the colors are now FLAT/MUTED...it now no longer has the vibrant colors that "pop" (that's the best way to describe it). The only thing different I did was to re-set my Vizio Smartcast TV (cus' the regular apps, Netflix, TubiTv, etc. FROZE) AND re-set my Direct TV receiver. But I've done that before in the past, and it STILL had the HD quality/bright vibrant colors/pop. But now it doesn't!! I've called Direct TV customer service and the only thing they were able to tell me was that my cable box is an older one (which doesn't make sense cus' I've just had Direct TV for about a year and a half) and they told me that apparently there's newer software and maybe after my most recent receiver re-set, it doesn't comply... which really doesn't make any sense. Please if you can help me with any info/advice, I would greatly appreciate it! THANKS.

This seems like good information, it went by too fast...I’m getting an icon by some recordings in my dvr, this program can’t be played because too many recordings are being watched from playlist:genie, i show 38% free space, I have only one genie on, do you know how to fix this?

over time, we've lost the ability to start a recording daily at 5 pm and have it's duration be 10 hours, are there any secret tricks to regaining that functionality? Some don't what to pick through separately recorded programs to "rebuild" a missed evening of watching a single channel..I appreciate these tips..thank you for taking the time to share them..we're slow adopters here, just upgraded one of my old hr24's to an hr44.. much prefer the button layout on the previous rf remote, and was able to setup my rc66rx remotes for the genie, thank's to tips like yours.

@@TechFan "new" installed genie 44 - so nearly 1tb free. of the 1tb hdd, i'm going to add an 8tb external esata drive next week, delivery times have slowed considerably.

Just wondering if the only way to get rid of the banner ads in the guide is to remove the channel below the ad? This seems extreme but I have found no other way to remove the ads. I understand the purpose but when a HUSTLER ad is blaring across my screen with young kids I am ready to just dump Directv.

Hi Techfan! Great video. I noticed in the beginning of the video the background of the directv menu is gray and towards the end, you get a pitch black and cleaner looking menu/ guide. How do you get it to show pitch black?

Honestly its the TV settings, one is set darker than the other as I used two different TV's for the video with a camera, if you take a look at my latest video I now used an encoder to capture the video and it looks uniform throughout. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6WWlmlrrMt2ors

Tech Fan ok. I wish there was an answer. I tried holding the select button down 15 seconds like you said. Sometimes. My genie info shows that it is at 480p??? I dont know why. When i go to settings and turn on all resolutions including 4k, i can get it to show 1080i but i cant get it to go higher than that and it doesnt change image quality anyways. Is there a way I can get it to to show 4k or 1080p in the info? I feel like that would fix my problem. My menus/guide where once pitch black for a while and suddenly they turned a washed out ugly gray and i cant get it to go back. Thanks anyways. Keep up the good work.

DTV for sure have changed the shades over time from first release, the latest is darker to me, almost black and white. I assume we are talking about the 61K 4K genie? Do you have the genie direct to the TV or passing thru and AVR?

Tech Fan im not sure what AVR is. Im using the 4k mini genie with my 4k hdr tv. My tv has what they call a one connect mini box. All hdmi cables connect to this box and one cable from this box goes to the tv.

say you have a series recorded how do you see the list of the recorded series to pick one to watch...also before if you stopped a recorded show part way thru there was a resume button where is that now?

Hit the list button on your remote, use the arrow keys to move to the series you want to watch, use the select button to navigate into the series folder and again arrow to the episode you want to watch. When on the episode hit select to start it. If you were watching a recorded show and hit pause and exit or change to a station for example you just go back into the record list and find the show you were watching, when select it again it will start where you left off. Hope that helps.

Any tips on getting the DVR to record only first run episodes? My Genie won’t do first run only. It runs all episodes. The only ones that will do first run are the shows my old DVR settings had selected as first run. Is that a defect with Genie?

Tech Fan....is there a way we can clear out "Devices"? Each time you link your phone or tablet to the DVR through the Directv app...it adds your device in the DVR devices section. Well after a few phones and tablets, I can't seem to connect my new S8 active to the DVR in the app. It just sits and spins on "Registering DVR". I *think* it won't allow me to connect possibly because too many devices are already "connected' to my DVR....even though all the old devices are gone. HR 54 unit.

That's easy but....methinks my Genie 2 is defaulting at 480p most of the time. I suspect Direct TV is throttling the signal because....I just watched the Alabam v Ohio State football game in HD (according to the DTV schedule menu.....and it looked real good, like a 1080p signal should look like. But....other HD shows, are definitely 480p. The Genie was tested and showed 480p? WTF? My tv is a true 4K TCL R625 that ran a 4k youtube video rather well? These Genie 2's are junk. They run hot....and I've already replaced one and I suspect this one is also ready for an upgrade or new box.

Hate to say it but it does not appear that DTV will be increasing the font size anytime soon. Since the first release of the new menu the font size has been the same. Only changes have been font color to a slight degree and larger logos. Maybe down the road they will listen to us customers and give options to increase the size but as of today not yet. It's a very common question and complaint.

These new options would be nice if you could see them so for me, they suck. I have spoken with DTV a number of times and all say they will enlarge the font but never do. It's to bad ATT took over, now they don't give a crap about the customers. I've suffered enough and will be looking at my other options, Dish & Septrum. What good is DTV if you can't see what you want to watch!

This is one of my issues as well, not having the choice of small, medium, or large print is a big concern, I had no prob with the way it was in the past, dtv needs to take into consideration that there are some subscribers that are not so blessed. (ZOOM in vision) FYI, magnifying glass within reach becomes real handy. :-)

I actually opt-out of that one but when on it should just randomly record shows which would show up in the recorded list. I will enable it and see what it finds for me if anything, for all we know it's not working right now.

For the DVR... If I have 2 or more episodes of the same show, how do I find the first episode?

From Remote > List > Scroll up or down to the the show > Hit select > Scroll to which episode you want to watch > Hit select and it will start to play. This assumes there is more than one episode of the same series such as a show like "The Voice" etc. Let me know if that helps or not? I can try to explain further if needed.

I don't have a Genie box, but ON DEMAND, I like the Conan shows. But for any of them more than just a few days (like 3) old, I get the 927 error. They sent me a new receiver. Is that going to fix this? Another thing that bugs me is that instead of texting with an engineer, I'm talking to a "Social Media Specialist". Getting to hate AT&T, like other people.

You can't, it's one size, one color fits all :( This is a common complaint and many folk are feeling your pain. Only remedy is to get closer or a larger TV right now which is not ideal for 99% of the community. I give some more tips in my latest video but again nothing you can do to change the size or color.

I have one question. I am new to the genie so when I’m watching a program that I recorded how do I stop it so that I can finish watching it later? That is the only thing that I cannot figure out.

Just pause the show and either shut off the box or change to another channel. There is no stop button. When you start the program again from the list it will be where you left off.

Did something happen in the last month where "ALL RECORDINGS" actually no longer shows all recordings? And sometimes you have to scroll to MOVIES or TV SHOWS or in the last resort "Continue Watching"? At this moment... I've lost a lot and my GF has the same issue at her apartment.

Actually it's a bug a far as I can tell, reboot the HR and see if they all show again. I have had to reboot twice in the last two months. Never had to prior

You haven't actually lost the recordings; you've just lost the normal way of accessing them. If you look at the disk free % number, you'll see it hasn't changed. I found that pressing 0 in the playlist (to sort alphabetically), restored the full playlist, but that no longer works. :-( Going to "Continue Watching" only displays the shows that you had started watching. The only other way I've found to watch shows, that were never started, is to go to Playlist/Manage Recordings/Recording History and search through the list for shows marked as Recorded.

I forgot to mention that you can get the full playlist back by rebooting the receiver, but that takes almost 5 minutes, and after an hour or so, it stops displaying most of the shows again.

From when I made this video to now DVT removed the logos in the guide, why they did that I have no idea. I left a note in the comments but changed it to PIN an update about the larger font guide they released over the weekend as beta. Which did you run? Clearmybox? that will freeze and reboot the HR to clean up the guide, it's a good idea to run that once in a while but it will not bring back the logos like it did prior. Again no idea why DTV removed them from the guide, you can still see them when changing channels in the top right side of the screen. Wish I could edit videos and update them but YT does not have that option.

They are on and it does work, the screen is defaults to what you see when you select to turn it on. Just another one of those things they need fix.

Beware if you upgrade your equipment you lose the Caller ID feature. Rep told me it isn't offered anymore-----afterwards.

Saying if you upgrade your hardware they now require the internet to be connected and not a phone line. This has been the case for a long time and I would gather to guess you have some rather old equipment. While that feature might be a good one it does not outweigh the other lost features holding onto an older hardware.

We are all stuck with Grey for now with no option to change i. I hear DirecTV is working on options for us but not till summer or later. I will update here when something comes forward as well as make another video showing the updates etc.

My genie continually says I have below HD speeds but I am getting speed tests on my phone computer and tablets of over 400mbps download and 600 upload , can you help me figure out wtf is wrong??? I’ve done practically everything and At&T even sent out an agent to review my internet speeds and said they were fine but said it was my DirecTV genie box for some reason. Please help!

This should like a software bug then, if the HR or HS (Main unit) says speeds are good I would either force a software update or ask them to replace the the main box.

Use the fast forward button while in the guide ">>" , that will advance it 12 hours. I am working on a complete guide to the new software, should have it done by next week.

Directv decided to get rid of them in the guide, sorry I liked them too. If you change channels up and down you will still see them on the right hand upper side.

My direct goes out at different days of x, but jus this morning 10-7-18 at 4am 730am, was unable to watch anything but DVDs, then it goes on like nothin ever happened, in the left corner it has 3 letters SVP attendre ?????? ( exactly) HELP what is your advice on this issue that's driving me C R A Z Y!

I would call directv for support on that as I never had heard of that error code, next time try to take a picture of the error with your mobile phone.

Make sure you are getting a code 88 when you do a network speed check. Also sometimes resetting your local router fixes the issue.

On the remote Hit LIST -> Arrow Left and scroll down to "Manage Recordings" then arrow right and select "Upcoming Recordings". I assume that is what you are asking about right?

ive tried the clearmybox 2 & clearmybox. however the guide does populate after a day or 2 but my guide posters will not return. its been a week and its not working like before. any suggestions on how to get the guide posters to work properly? also, which going to info about a particular show or actor, there is no info about either. no DOB or other showings listed anymore. right now im running software 13AF

Make sure the internet connection is working from the Network tester on the main receiver.

@@TechFan thank you for the reply. the internet is working. when doing a test it says I have 4k speeds. thing is, its always worked and been connected. ive seen people suggest doing a double rbr as well as unplugging and online refresh. some suggested enabling edgecutter via search to bring them back but nothing works for some reason. I have guide data, but no posters, no info regarding shows, or actors. no original premier date or other shows a particular actor was in. its pretty much just guide only, no extras. apps work, pandora and iheart work fine. those came back after about 2hrs after a clearmybox over a week ago. I noticed this started during a few days of bad weather when I "un-hid" sd duplicates & created an sd favorite list so I wouldn't be aggravated with rain fade like I was with the hd channels. when I re-hid the sd channels, all the posters vanished and the guide showed limited info. any thoughts?

@@TechFan my apologies, I misunderstood about the network tuner. I checked and its at 98%. still no advanced guide info / data as of today. no posters. is this something directv has stopped providing maybe? tech support is clueless as to what is wrong.

directv replaced the dvr under the protection plan. its now 5 days and still have the same issue. limited to no guide info. no posters or channel logos in info banner. system test comes back ok, network tuner and signal are all fine. unplugging, rbr does nothing, online refresh does nothing. at this point im just gonna have to assume directv / guide people, are no longer providing advanced program info in the guide. I just don't know how to fix this and neither does directv tech support. I do appreciate your reply and suggestion earlier. thank you :-)

Not much you an do, I think they made it worse as of late by adding more advertising of shows between the guide. Frankly it drives me nuts but they are in control of the guide. DTV gives the enduser little options when it comes to the guide and they now even insert adds when you pause a show.

Missing logos or on-demand or they do not return after a recent update and you gave it a few hours? First test internet connectivity with DirecTV servers by doing a speed test. If the first 2 digits of the result code are 88, means you are connected. If the first 2 digits are 87 this would mean the receiver can access the internet but not DirecTV servers. If they can't connect to the servers, try rebooting your router and see if you get the same result. Post below if you can't get to code 88 when testing and I will try to help you.

One of three options will fix it 1) reboot HR twice, let it fully reboot before doing another one 2) "clearmybox" same process as #3 (box will reboot after you search and select) 3) "IAMANEDGECUTTER" (Menu > Search > Select, go out and back in and check for Misc. Options Adding # 3 works on any build and points the system to different backend DTV servers. Menu > Search > "IAMANEDGECUTTER" Select it, go out of the menu and back and check the bottom, you will see "Misc Options", wait a few hours and see if it repopulates Doing #2 clears the guide out, but none of your settings, recordings etc, this refreshes guide including the logos and posters. Will take time to download info, logos and posters. Doing #1 is the easiest but I doubt it will bring them back but rebooting twice in a row, does a mini clear. (not settings just guide like #2 but it's not a full guide clear, partial) Only try one at a time and wait etc. Also do a speedtest (settings / Network etc) and make sure you get an 88 code not 87.

I am hearing that the logo's might have been removed for good from the guide in the latest versions 1040 & 1082 but not 100% confirmed yet. Which version do you have right now? From the HR Menu > Settings > Info >

OK should work there but make sure to enable "IAMANEDGECUTTER" (Menu > Search > Select, go out and back in and check for Misc. Options). After you do that give it a few hours or half a day to populate. You can also update to 1040 non beta during the week or wait till next weekend and update to the next CE. I am still trying to confirm if the logos in the guide are going away for good. I can say without them the guide is much faster but makes quickly idejnfitiying the channels harder to see. I will post back here when I confirm 100% for sure if the they are gone for good in the guide. Latest non beta is 1040 and latest beta (CE) as of this weekend 4/28 is 0X1082

Sorry, do a search for IAMANEDGECUTTER and select it (won't see anything just select it), when you go out of the menu and back in you will see at the bottom Misc Options, you don't need to do anything in that menu. When you see that you are now pointed to different back end DTV servers. When on CE(Beta) it's best to have this enabled etc.

Did you try to reboot it first? Which receiver do you have? If you have one of the the HR's, searching for " Clearmybox " and selecting it as shown in the video 99% of the time clears up a slow guides or menus. Did you try that?

reboot the HR and see if all programs show up, if not go into one of the folders and go to the bottom of the last recorded program, then arrow back to the right and see if the rest reappear. If not there might be something up with the drive it self but most likely not.

Tech Fan ; thanks for the response. I did a reboot and all recorded programs showed up again. Within ten minutes, most were gone again. In researching this, someone said to press “0” when in “All Recording”, brings back The disappearing recordings.....SMDH. However, they eventually go away again.

Last weekend they released a beta which I think address the lost recordings issue some are experiencing as it's a known issue. First time I am hearing they go away again in 10 minutes. I experienced it sometime ago but was after a while not so quick. Currently I am on firmware 0X113B and do not have any issues.

My first DTV receiver was around that time, I remember a little bug back then, which was when you tried to align the dish with the beeps it would continue to beep until you locked on (normal). But.... if you left the beeping going for too long (maybe working on the actual dish) it would actually not display if you actually found the satellite after X amount of time. So it drove me crazy I knew I was spot on with the coordinates or really close, after that I picked up one of those finders. That was my first install and learning experience with DTV. I have three complaints about the new guide. (1) Hate the preview box when I scroll through my recorded programs. This gets in the way of the recordings I want to get to. I hope there is an option to remove it. (2) On the previous guide if I want to see future recordings of a series, it was a simple process. It showed the name of the episode, the episode number, and the date and time it will be presented. That is all gone now. When I look for future episode information, all it gives it some times and channels, but I have no idea if it is referring to the episode I am watching or future episodes. I simply gives me no information. We use this function a lot and now it is useless. (3) Yes, like many others, the smaller font size doesn't work. We need a larger font.

Agreed and same complaints here, I hear they are starting the listen to the users but it's taking forever to make these improvements. I hate that you can't sort by episode when in the list, it goes by record date with no options to sort. If you reboot the HR it will then sort by episode that one time and not again until another reboot, crazy.....

AT&T who owns DTV is just following the rest of the pac. The new GUI you see now is the same generic makeup as many other carriers, I can't post pictures here but if I could I would be able to show you how the new GUI looks like many others that are out there today. Give it a week or two and you will find it's not that bad just different. Wish I could offer you an option to go back but DTV is quickly phasing out the old operating system for the new.

What's going on at Directv? The Playlist has been screwed up for a month. I was a SW Engineer for 30+ years and if I ever screwed up this bad or didn't fix it in a day, I would have been out of a job. Plus, I haven't been able to pay my bill online at ATT for 3 months. I've been getting this msg since May; "We are upgrading our online account management system right now."

AT&T messed my account up for 6 months when I first signed up, they offered me $50 for the issues and then took it back. Frankly most carriers hold you hostage these days, only reason I am an DTV customer is for the picture quality, can't be beat right now. Boxes stinks, OS stinks and have a dish on the house stinks too.

Every morning I'm having to downgrade my software to the old gui. I hate the new one. Is there a way to block the software update?

From the old GUI try this, go into the menu and do a search for "IAMANEDGECUTTER" and select it, you should then see at the bottom when you go back into the menu again "Misc Options". See if enabling that stops the updates, I don't think so but it might. Report back what happens, as the backend servers change which maybe is where you are flagged for the update. The issue is your HR is on the DTV list to be updated and once on the list it will keep pushing you to the new GUI. This is a guess, so give it a shot as I am just trying to see what will work to get it to stop. I personally have gotten used to the new GUI after hating it for while, it really just takes time to sink in. I agree with you 100% and was unhappy too, but at least you missed the first few months of the rollout which was very painful due to so many bugs. The latest is the best of what they have so far, so they now are pushing it out to the masses much faster then prior.

not that I am aware of, the firmware can only be applied from the stream only, if it was via IP you could block it but it's off the satellite feed etc. So the OS was written with this as the only process, but technically, one with the skills could do what you are asking or at least block the update. Just block the stream or fail it in some way etc, but that is way out of my comfort zone :) Only thing you can do is take a raspberry pi like I show in another video and use a cronjob to downgrade at 7:15 AM ET every morning until they sunset it. I updated the process to reboot the HR via IP and then apply the update sequence, its updated on the GitHub I included in the notes of that video. I probably won't do an update of that video to show it as the viewership is low or interest. Also give the new GUI sometime as in the end you might actually like it.

Tech Fan, I searched for the iamanedgecutter. I got a Miscellaneous Options menu now. It has Report Server, Report all, Level 2 test, Playlist sort, WVB Logging and done as the options. None appear to have anything to do with stopping updates. Do you have any other suggestions?

I'm looking for a detailed explanation of the new Menu. For example, where is ProgramManager. I can't find it. Also, why can't I manage future recordings? I can no longer delete programs I don't want to record. Although I program recordings of no more than five shows, I still get many more -- like 31 Steinfelds. Lot's more questions which could be answered if you published a system "tree" showing all the connections. I've spent an hour on the TV trying to understand the logic of the new Menu and an hour on the Web site looking for an answer.

I can answer a few of these but the video I created was not intended to be a menu walkthrough but with that said I will start to work on one. Program manager can be found by hitting the "list" button on the remote, arrow left and all the way down to "Manage Recordings". Inside there you will find "Series Manager", that is where you can remove shows you no longer want to record. When setting up 5 shows, its actually not a maximum rather not to keep no more then 5 shows when space is needed. So if you have tons of space it will not delete until the space is needed. Also you can get to your recordings by hitting "menu" and arrow down and left to "view playlist" select, then you can arrow left to "Manage Recordings" select, arrow right to any one of the options you want to modify or check on such as "upcoming recordings". Hope that helps?

The community agrees with you as so do I! I hear AT&T is working on a fix but not till the summer, we will see if it comes true. Even in the latest betas they haven't changed a thing aside from making it worse by removing the logos on the left (guide). There is nothing we can do right now as they forgot to include any options to help folks actually see the guide and the new menus is a stream line effort by AT&T to align all of their products with the same interface. Yes it stinks and again hopefully they release a fix as they promised.
