I remember the days when the channels actually had content that matched their name. MTV had music videos, TLC actually had learning content instead of useless 90 day fiancée, History actually had history shows, Discovery actually had science shows. I want them all to go away and start all over again. I think the only one true to its founding still is Turner Classic Movies.

The off-shoot channels (which are actually just niche collections) were a convenient way for companies like MTV, BET, Nick, etc. to diversify their target audiences by offering the niche programming, but still maintain their core broadcasting services. Let's not forget that a lot of these companies are also on the woke train and many people are being turned off by some of the content being shown on the networks. I do agree with you on the loss of TCM though.

I think that's already happening as the prices of streaming services keep increasing so your 'personal bundle' is approaching the cost of your old cable TV bill. I cut off all the paid streaming and went to an OTA antenna and just use free streaming to watch an occasional movie. My local public library also has quite a nice DVD collection of movies and old television series I can check out.

The thing is as long as paid streaming services allow monthly subscriptions that can be easily cancelled and resarted cord cutters cost will only gets close to the cost of cable if you use a live tv service, which I really don’t get why people subscribe at this point and sub to every paid service every single month. Especially once you get rid of the live tv service you still can save tons of money by simply cycling thru one or two paid services and the cost of your internet

When I cancelled my standard TV with Spectrum, my bill went from $140 per month to $85 per month. That saves me $55. If you subtract the network carriage fee, RSN fee and some of the higher priced fees like ESPN, the math tells me that the profit margin skyrocketed when I did this. No wonder the rep didn't try to talk me into staying with the TV package. They didn't let the door hit me on the ass on the way out.

I grew up in the late 70’s & 80’s when cable wasn’t even really offered even in a large city like Chicago except for HBO & and couple of other channels so until 1985 we were stuck with the three networks, PBS & and handful of UHF channels. When we finally got cable in the summer of 85 I was amazed at having I believe it was around 60 channels. However somewhere around the mid 00’s I began to realize that TV was just better when we only had 3 networks, PBS & and handful of UHF channels. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good shows on different platforms but you have to wade through so much more trash to find them. I honestly find myself watching old school shows Freevee or Pluto & only watching YTTV for sports & maybe 2 or three network shows which is whim glad I can pause it.

I've got an idea. How about we just drop them all. I was born in 1950 and grew up with 3 tv channels until UHF brought 2 more on the scene. We watched the news and weather first thing in the morning and then at 6 at night. During the day there were reruns of movies and a few soap operas. At night there were movie series like dragnet, Perry Mason , Combat and then at midnight the stations would sign off and play the National Anthem. Sundays were special with some major sports and Disney and some big movie at night. And guess what ? We got along fine. I say lets try it again. !

I think you're too optimistic about ATSC 3.0 TV. It's getting tied up in FCC regulatory disputes right now between consumer groups, broadcasters, software development companies, and major media companies. Some want OTA TV kept free for all with an antenna, some want everything encrypted with DRM so its all PPV, and there are software licensing issues (the LG mess). I'm not sure it will ever happen unless the FCC sticks itself into it all and regulates it at some 'middle ground', but if that happens its likely the broadcasters would just broadcast minimal OTA content and have everything else on PPV streaming platforms to maximize revenue. Personally, I expect it to die before anything gets resolved, OTA TV will stay the same as it is now at the ATSC 1.0 level, and the real growth will be in paid streaming platforms.

I like the way these companies ASSUME everyone has high speed internet to stream everything. A lot more of us don’t have it and can’t even get it! Rural Indiana and we have very poor cell reception, and/or it’s way overloaded, in some places zero, not to mention internet, let alone high speed! No cable. TV is free over the air local stuff or a dish…..that’s it. This state is fairly well populated, bigger more wide open states are way worse! Big cities are the only places this stuff is viable.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 10 ай бұрын
No big cities are not the only kinds of places these services are viable, as I live in rural S. Carolina in a town that has a population of around 2,400 people(we have to drive 30 mins to over an hour to get to a Walmart, or other big stores), and we have had had fast cable internet since 2007 from BreezeLine cable(formally Atlantic Broadband) with speeds of 1 gigabit if you're willing to cough up a kidney each month for it, Frontier DSL(they claim to be running fiber soon), along with T-Mobile, and Verizon 5G Home Internet plans(AT&T to follow at some point in the future) with fast speeds. In fact I have T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, and I'm seeing speed over 600 Mbps down(rare burst over 800 Mbps) and uploads as high as 150 Mbps with sub 24ms idle pings. So again, no big cities are not the only place these services work if the companies are willing to put in the work to make money, and they need to be shown there is money to be made, so get out there start a petition, and get all the people in your town to sign it, make copies, send to your town council, then all the major ISP/cell companies that service your surrounding area to again prove there is money to be made, that's exactly what I did back in 06/07 to get Breezeline to finally give us faster that dial-up internet speeds, and it took time but other companies also realized there is money to be made, and they came in to service my area. So don't complain, be proactive!!!

Dont be surprised if these ISP's/CTP's accelerate their transition plans, especially with coaxial based infrastructure. The bandwidth to move forward is there, it always has been, and so has the technology. The fact that streaming services are disrupting the marketplace is what I am glad to see and be a part of. Since moving to Internet only service with all other services as streaming (i.e. roku, firestick, etc.) I have been saving over $200 a month and my service is leagues ahead of my previous major vendor ISP. What has happened with streaming services though is that products like Roku and Firestick/FireTV have simplified the tech side of the house which was needed prior to these major streaming services. As the current state of the economy continues to wrench hardships on consumers, most of your middle-class that were "meh I might try it out" are being forced to move to streaming services to balance monthly budgets. How do you think this fares with the future of traditional ISP services and costs?

Spectrum _actively_ worked to get me off of TV and voice - when my all-in bill went from $229 --> $350 in the span of less than 2 years and couldn't explain what was on the bill and never tried to negotiate (I actually won't negotiate with terrorists) - I went from having 3 Spectrum services (top tier for everything) to a non-Spectrum customer. I probably spend about $200 a month (again all-in) for more services than I had before (including live TV) and happier overall. I won't say I'll never go back to cable TV but there's less a 1% chance ;-)

That's because when it comes to Pluto TV with a lot of their content to get the full series they want you to sign up for Paramount Plus so they make more money, and other times when it's not directly content they own, but have licensed from a license holder they might not always get the right to the full series for one reason or another, and one example is Netflix was showing Miami Vice several years back, but due to some of the music used in the show, they could not show several key episodes that ruined the entire flow of the series, so yeah there are several reasons, and not just one.

Most cable channels especially the ones that continue to produce original content are tied to and owned by a studio with a streaming service and all the original content is available via that streaming service. What seems to be happening is the studios are dropping the cable network and offering the content via streaming and discontinuing the cable network. A few of the studios that have free ad supported services like Paramount may add some of that content there as a streaming channel with the cable network branding but they more likely just absorb and offer via streaming. That’s what happened in the Spectrum/ Disney deal the channels were drop but subscriptions to the streaming services where the content of those channels are available is being added to the cable package

I would like to know if cable companies get paid by all the non major channels and if they drop them are they will be paying less and will they apply that "less" to my cable bill saving me money. I am not speaking of major channels that I have to subscribe too, all the other hundreds of channels along with all the music channels that I don't watch or listen too. I think the answer is let me pic a dozen channels I want and pay accordingly. I see no reason why my cable bill for TV should be more than $30-$40 a month.

Questions for Luke? What is a Xumo box? Is it a glorified Roku? If it a glorified Roku box, then I would stick with a Roku box or a smart TV. Roku has more app than Amazon Fire stick. I don't need a Roku on my living room TV, because that's a Roku TV. The TV in bedroom in my bedroom is a dumb LCD TV, so my Roku Ultra is on that TV. My Cousin bought a Roku Ultra for his living room and he loves the voice feature.

I don't even know why Peacock refuses to service Linux. There are no apps for Linux, and I doubt there ever will be. If you prefer Linux, you're stuck with an Internet browser which I actually prefer, anyway. You might say something that Linux users could screen capture a video streaming service. No, they can't. I've experimented for the fun of it, and the web browser player always knows when you try to do that and stops playing. There is only one way to capture streaming video to record it, and that's to get a Chinese device that strips the HDMI of the HDCP info for use with old screens that can't use it. I don't have an HDMI capture device, but you're done at that point. Macrovision is harder to strip from videotape. Even with a black box, artifacts are left behind.

If anything like cable [ linear live pay tv] will survive its going to have to condesne down to the way it used to be in the 1980s with about 20 to 30 channels with good content, and that will be streaming not a cable box. Mtv2 Teen Nick, Nick Jr and logo should go first and that content be but on Nickelodeon. Boomerang can be merged with cartoon network and Freefeom wirh Disney or vice versa.

If cable companies move to streaming and not use a simple app for firestick, Ruku, etc. and have to use their box, will they force you to rent the box like cable tv. I don't like the idea of paying for programming and then having to rent a box for each room I want to watch it in.

They won't do this, simply because they are not in a position to do this anymore. They can't risk even more people leaving them, and this would do that. Everyone would make a vast jump onto KZbin TV, Hulu and others. The consumers have the leverage now and cable knows it

@@greyeagle4388 My relatives in Florida have Spectrum cable and have an app on 3 of their Roku TVs saving them cable box rentals. My cable company COX refuses to offer the app for a Roku/Firestick, this greed will put them under and I have no sympathy for them. They have had their way with the consumer for many years along with the source of the programing. Sooner or later the TV programming part of it has to go streaming and then a blood bath will happen since we can pick up programming from so many other sources. You would think with the power of a cable company like Comcast, COX, they would be able to purchase programming cheaper than anyone else and wipe out all the competition but they seem to be holding out for the last buck before they make a change.

In the end, wireline services will be fiber and only fiber. Television and telephone services have become applications that just run on top of the same data network and this trend is not going to reverse. Smart providers are going QAM-less, even if they are still (for now) providing a set top box that makes it look otherwise. Comcrap is cheaping out by shoving more and more data over coaxial cable, and will eventually be QAM-less as well, but eventually even without using any 6 Mhz slots for broadcast video, they're still going to run out of capacity. Just ask AT&T, who did exactly that and is now regretting it.
