Again awesome video. I personally love the warp speed sound of talking! I wonder if you considered putting texture on the pick part of the handle. Might make it easier to grip when doing delicate work. I would also love to see how you would do it. Also curious about the necessity of the length of the threads.
@jamesrawlings84939 жыл бұрын
Nice looking ice pick. I wonder if it would be more useful to have the sheath be the part with the hook. That way if it is on a belt, the ice pick can be used without undoing the the belt. Just a thought.

When are you going to make an OTF automatic ice pick? Would be handy for sure.
@tHeO145739 жыл бұрын
+Ollie W love that idea
@antifascistskater9 жыл бұрын
the problem with OTFs is blade play, and the mechanisms aren't always the strongest, it'd be kinda sketchy because an ice pick is subjected to repeated downward force to a basically solid object. Unless your use for an ice pick differs from mine, it wouldn't do too well.

Just a little tip for thread cutting. Taper the edge before threading and smooth out the finish of the material.

I think you could get away with fewer threads. just make it shorter. 1-2 turns and it's out, and it's enough to keep them together.

@McJaews9 жыл бұрын
Hey Jimmy, Would you consider making the thread shorter? To keep from having to turn it so many times to fasten it/loosen it? Great job btw! A definite improvement on your previous design. I especially like the new loop, and the uniform width.
@yankeedoodle94434 жыл бұрын
3 full rotations is the minimum requirement on a standard UNC thread. The fastest draw would be an acme thread, but with as the diameter of the material is already rather small, an acme thread would be hard to achieve due to the deeper threads. Considering its brass which an extremely soft material i would say a minimum of 4 full turns would be necessary. And at .078" per rotation youre still unthreading only half an inch or so including the lead in. There's really no better option if you're planning on using this and it being functional for more than a week. Besides, an ice pick isn't something you would realistically need to be able to pull out quickly.

Jimmy, forgive me questioning the master ;-) When you placed the die in the holder you tightened the screws to hold it in, fair enough. I thought that the centre screw of the three was to hold it in, while the left & right screws minutely adjusted the cut of the thread? Can you confirm as I have no idea where I picked this info up - I'm a swimming teacher! Cheers!

Jimmy, 1st off, beautiful work....like many others I wanna get a lathe too, I was wondering as to your thoughts, the sheath is to to avoid accidentally stabbing yourself with the icepick, but then you made the end of the sheath pointed. Granted, its not as sharp and prob not gonna stab someone and... its sure good looking.....but isn't it going against what you are trying to achieve
@R.V_Gaming945 жыл бұрын
With the same logic that you're putting out, whenever somebody makes a knife sheath and it comes to a point it also defeats the purpose of the sheath. But we all know it's just for Aesthetics , and sure it would be pokey if somebody poked us with it, by covers up the much more dangerous metal blade.

I think I would turn the initial 1/2 (or more) of the threads away on the handle (and possibly taper the resulting 'ferrule'). It wouldn't take nearly as many twists to unsheathe and would make for a smoother resheathe. Any reason you opted for cyanoacrylate over epoxy (other than for speed)? C.A. is kind of brittle for shock/impact applications, and you tend to be stabby.
