As a kid, my grandfather used wood cottage cheese boxes for random parts in the shop, he had 60-70 of them! Unfortunately, they are lost to time… I always wanted the same, but those wood boxes hard to find… so I made 40 3" x 3" x 12" wood boxes.
I did some research and discovered a few methods used to make the original wood boxes in batches. I updated some of the techniques along the way.
I used my Shopbot to handle the wood joinery and the Full Spectrum laser to do the branding ... Originally I was going to use the printing press, but the hard maple that I used to make the boxes was not soft enough to letter press. Also, I wanted the branding to be deep for the sanding stage. So I ended up only branding 12 of the wood boxes because of time.
Thank you

My grandfather worked in the Walworth wrench foundry in South Boston in the late 40's, early 50's. They used to ship the wrenches in finger jointed boxes like these. However, the bottoms were fitted inside and no nails or screws were used. I have four of the boxes and they are still solid in spite of being over 60 years old. Excellent job on these boxes.

...everybody that’s concerned about my tablesaw etiquette first remember this is a saw stop and if my hand touch the blade machine will shut off secondly I’ve been using a tablesaw since I was about 10 years old that makes 45 years of me using a tablesaw with that comes confidence in using a tool. And thirdly the reason I had the blade come halfway up so that it would be out of my way.. I would almost have to go out of my way to touch the blade ..and if I did it would shut off because it’s a saw stop. if you’re sacred to watch me use a tablesaw..stop watching race car driving stop watching people on motorcycles stop watching kids on skateboards football and motocross and surfing. And skiing I think you get the point

Ro Rebbel he does it in this one. Sometimes it can be difficult to glue and screw/nail at the same time. If you glue things together and let them set then it is much easier to screw/nail and a lot more accurate. A lot of the time it has help me, try it, if it doesn’t help don’t do it anymore All the best
@rebbel67
@rebbel67 4 жыл бұрын
@@dougdavis8367 Thank you for explaining, I got it now! I guess one would have to be not too sloppy with putting the glued workpieces away. That's where I was a bit confused. You would have to be pretty accurate, to not get almost set up glue and be off (before nailing/screwing). Thanks again!

The last finger joint machine in Rochester NY was still working at Fitsimmons Manufacturing in 1970. It could originally cut 18" of joint but was down to 6" of capacity in 70 for want of blades and no jobs left that required the full capacity. Stack the slats up 3" high, position against the fence and lock down with 1 pedal, then step on the other pedal to move the arbor up & down. Swap ends & flip the stack to cut the other end. A pure marvel of 19th Century cast iron that machine was. It had first run from a line shaft driven by a water wheel and was well cared for thru half a dozen owners after. It jointed thousands of boxes for Bausch & Lomb optical in its life, and eventually disappeared to keep it from going to scrap as did its neighbor the cigar box nailer when Fitsimmons closed.

I thought you would have used the band saw to resaw those pieces. But it looked like it worked just fine. The laser did a great job on thise designs. I was surprised that the small end pieces moved so much while being laser end. What caused that? I love these boxes. Great project.
