It is so beautiful to watch how Knopfler didn't become cocky as the lead who makes the band, but he so joyfully delights in seeing his band mates enable him and him enabling his band mates. This true expression of joy is what captivates me. He is unwittingly honoring some high spiritual principles and thereby inspires a good way. I guess "based" is the modern word of compliment for that.

This is one of my three selections for "What music would you want played at your funeral?" Not just Dire Straits doing "Sultans of Swing", but this particular recording. Knopfler at his best, rich instrumentation, plus Terry Williams on drums. This is as good as rock gets.
@chetthehoss2 жыл бұрын
Dire Straits were probably one of the best bands at changing volume and tempo repeatedly throughout a song and bringing out every subtle nuance in their performance. This is what live performances should be like. Even if you're not a musician, there's something that everyone can take out of seeing and hearing something unique. It also allows the players to avoid being overcome with boredom -- playing the song the same every night. It does, however, require that the band have that deep connection and know how to play together, and play off of each other. This is a clinic in how to do that. Utter brilliance!

Furthermore, now that I am in the final stages of a terminal illness, I find that rewatching these videos of their performances is one of the very few things that makes me feel truly happy and alive in the moment (in addition to the nostalgia and artistic appreciation, I suspect it also has something to do with the dopamine, adrenaline, serotonin and / or endorphins that are released as a result). Got to be one of the greatest performances in the history of performing! Amazing musicians, all of them. Glad to see (in the comments) Terry Williams getting credit where it’s very much due. If you have time, watch the documentary about him. Such a lovely, down to earth guy. I don’t think I can say anything about Marl Knopfler that’s not already (rightly) been said. Amazing performance.

Nah, 9:47 is that perfect moment. After that amazing solo that lasts forever it finishes off into that riff.
I remember the explosive sensation of greatness that I felt the day I first heard this version and I arrived at 06:56 and the final solo. It was as if someone had opened a hidden door of light and pleasure in some part of myself. I was shivering, and I thought it was too good to be true. That's what music is like, I guess.
