This past September in NE Oregon I heard glunking from several hundred yards away. Was convinced it was another hunter above the elk with a downhill thermal in play. Figured they were going to blow out of the canyon. Glunking sounded exactly like someone thumping on the small end of a Phelps bugle tube. It was the herd bull harassing a hot cow. Killed a spork in that herd because the herd bull gave away their position.

Who knew the The Bugler is actually The Hochie Squeezer. Don't look behind the curtain. He is the "Great and Powerful Oz". Can't wait for a "Squeezer" T-shirt to come out.

Dirk,,, My Chuckling is what sealed the deal when i called in other hunters literally to my feet..!!! (Man,, did every one of them look sad & mad when they turned the corner & here we were waiting & waiving for them !!! haha)... I know exactly what you are referring to when listening to others calling - The chuckle is simply off......... The beginning, The middle transitional changes in pitch & the ending of a Bugle note also tells a tale.... I've been practicing for 2 years straight !!!

I was sitting in a natural blind of 3 trees in an open meadow 90 yd s from aspen trees. I heard "doug flutie behind me 100 yds. After 5 terrible sounding bugles i stepped out of the trees into open meadow waving my arms hoping doug woulld see me and move on. To my shock there was a rag 5 bedded looking my direction. I dove into the "blind" and called with a hoochie mama..he walked on a string to me to 7 ft away..videoed him as he hung out within 20 yds for 20 min. I was upwind at 7 feet as he searched and listened for hoochie mamma. I did use cover spray on myself as he was walking in. Says something in that doug can be a bull...hoochies work sometime...scent killer sprays cant hurt . Thanks for letting us enjoy your hunts

Spot on! The hoochie mama is nice to have, but needs to be used as an extra tool. I like to use it on the calf setting and overlap my reed calls or over a bugle to sound more like a group of elk. Love the series and all the explanations on what your doing and why in each situation. Thanks for taking the time to do so.

Ran into an old logging company employee in northern Idaho who told us about one time he heard the WORST bugle he has ever heard while cruising some timber one morning. He just knew it was Flutie. As he got closer to the bugle, he rounded the corner and saw one of the largest 6x6 bulls he has ever seen in Idaho. You can never be 100% sure....

About the only time I use a Hoochie Mama anymore is when I call for someone else and do a cow party. Then I'm probably using 4 or 5 different cow calls including a diaphragm. But that Dusty outing you was hilarious!
@clintmurray37954 жыл бұрын
The Hoochie Mama makes allot of sence now. I was thinking a few episodes back, how's he going to be able to stop a bull? The Hoochie mama for that makes perfect sense. The whole Doug Flutey thing is a hard one! I've only been elk hunting for two years now and I struggle with it for sure. Currently I only rifle hunt, but in utah it's right at the end of the rut and into the second estrus cycle, so I have been trying to use calls and hear allot of others using them, but only after they have pulled me in. Hopefully when I'm able to afford a bow and get to get into hunting more in the rut, I'll get better at picking out those Doug Fluteys, because right now I'm going in no matter what and have been called in a few times now. But I'm getting there! I'm starting to hear the difference a little, but not enough to not go try. Thanks for sharing Dirk! Looking forward to tomorrow's video!

Thats me about the Diggler call !!! What do i gotta do in order to get this new call named ?!?!?!?!? hahaha...... I even messaged you on instagram a few times about it but i forgot my password there & cant figure it out..... Im newer to elk hunting since 2018 / Have never taken an elk but have been successful by getting into them by watching & learning from all your videos / along with 101/BRO/Newberg/& more.. It is crazy different to whitetail hunting here in Minnesota/Wisconsin

Everyone gets fooled by Doug occasionally. See day 5 of this series... Sometimes he comes in on two legs, sometimes four. I got fooled best a few years ago by a woman who owns an elk farm here in Idaho. She was fluent in elk talk just like Dirk is. Fortunately I picked them out of the brush while I was still a few hundred yards away before they spotted me bow in hand creeping on 'em like Elmer J. Fudd... Public land, no point getting mad. We had a good laugh, chatted for a bit about our seasons and went our separate ways.

DUSTY! DUSTY! OMG I did a quick hard core internet search an found a old National Inquire article on Will Primos bless his heart. Evidently he adopted a young snot nosed kid that went buy the name of Doug Flutee and when they went elk hunting, Doug would get lost in the woods so Will told him to just do a Bugle! AKA the Doug Flutee!! So when Doug turned 18 he wanted a more MACHO name, THATS RIGHT!! ( Dirk Durham ) is Doug Flutte!!! and that why he still carries the Hoochie Mama Will Primos gave him. Paul Harvey, good day.

Just like any bull though you've got to figure out what they're looking for. I bugled him away that morning. And at 1 that afternoon he would answer every fourth or fifth bugle, but screamed back at the Hoochie every single time. It worked like a charm that day.

I have a question. You talked about the different sound of a hunter blowing a reed through a tube verses an elk. You mentioned the tone of the chuckles. I can chuckle fairly well but I would like to know how you make that noise at the very end of your chuckle. After your last chuckle you make what sounds like a smooching or kissing sound. It is very subtle and not all that loud but I think it really adds some realistic sound to your call. I think you have the best series going this year, and I really like the good information you are providing. Don't stop what you do! Thx Rick

Thanks for all the tips and tricks! When solo calling a bull in when do you decide to project your call away from you as apposed to calling at the bull? Looks like you are sometimes calling right at the bull and then other times you are projecting... thanks again loving the series!

It's hard for a human to recreate that deep guttural sound of a real elk. Couple years ago had bull probably mile away sound off. Convinced human 1st bugle, by 3rd bugle my son replied, if that's not an elk it's Corey Jacobson, 🤣🤣🤣. Ended up being 350+ bull, unfortunately we weren't successful.

Here's a question: Do squirrels chatter at elk like they do at hunters? I've heard squirrels chattering, off in the distance, and I've always wondered if they were chattering at a large animal like an elk. I'd be willing to bet most elk hunters have a Hootchie Mama in a drawer back at the house.

@THEBUGLERBRAND4 жыл бұрын
Dave Wilson don’t be sorry. I guess you could say- Go where the elk are. When the elk have moved to the lower elevations towards their wintering grounds (just so happens to be by the road) you hunt where the elk are. I guess some folks are above picking the low hanging fruit first, but I find for me it’s hard to pass by the elk in front of my nose 👍🏻
