Just some safety tips from my experiance, #1 Clean your fuel tanks if you can, Some day you will be in heavy seas and scared , thats when crap will come loose in the tanks and plug your filters and shut you down at the worst moment. # 2 thouroughly inspect and lubricate your steering and rudders. #3 If you can , find someone who is very knowledgeable about that engine and those hydraulic sail drives to check them and teach you how to maintain them because you will be the one fixing them . #4 Change out below water line thru hulls if they havent been changed in a long time, seal them properly. These are just key safety items needed to get you through a storm.

And take out and plug up the through hull speed paddle wheel if it has one. Major common source of failure and scary when they do. See Lady K and Zingaro episodes.

i was in some of the cat forums and a cherokee 35 owner said "once we pulled out the old hydraulic drive system and put in a Honda 50hp she sailed quite well" The number one problem with sail drives is corrosion and if the previous owner didn't keep up on replacing anodes, the drive may need more work than its worth.

Hey Mark you really should install an expansion tank for your water system. i noticed that your pump turns off and on with the faucets. If you install the expansion tank it will act as a buffer allowing the system to hold pressure for longer which means your pump wont run as often.

On our old Cherokee we ended up removing the motor and all hydraulics. We cut a hole in the cockpit sole and bridgedeck, built a pod and hung a Honda 50 outboard on it. We shedded hundreds of pounds, removed 2 large 3 bladed props that were a lot of drag under sail and made the Honda steerable with the wheel. Really transformed the sailing performance.

It looks like you are doing a reasonably good job chopping down those old cabinets and converting them into your new galley. That's not the easiest way to do things but it will save some time in the long run, it was brave to tackle that job like that and I think it will be much more practical than before ! I wouldn't want to have to rip it all out and start from scratch, that gets expensive and there's no end of designing and decision making before you can even start to rebuild it, at least this way you just need to decide what to cut away and what to leave.

Hi guys!! To prevent leaks, it is a good idea to put two collars on your hoses. It is mendatory for canadian boats but not every country requires it. You put one going clock wise and the second one a bit further going the other way. It one of the collars fails, the second one is there to do the job!

The old fashioned way to do deck paint is to sand well, paint the deck with a good enamel then tape off the areas you don’t want non skid and paint the area you do, while it is wet sprinkle it with crushed walnut shells ( which you use to be able to get at the chandlery for cheap). When the paint dries brush off the excess grit and put a coat of paint on the whole deck. Looks neat and professional at a very good price. Sand works too but walnut shellscare lighter and easier on bare feet. Lots of luck!

First let me say I appreciate how each of you work together and respect each other doing the videos. Every boat are money pits. You are wise to tackle one area at a time but having a general plan for the whole vessel would smart too. There is so much potential. Remember never buy the biggest house in the neighborhood. Regarding your deck redo, Use You Tube too as well your local paint companies for which products would be best. Caution before using international perfection or any other 2 part paint, it should only be applied over 2 part primers or under coats other wise it will melt the paint under it and fail. It's a fantastic product and its what I used but it is one of the most expensive options.

Hi Wildlings! One of the big expenses on a cat is the rigging. The rigging on a cat takes a lot more of a bashing than if it were on a mono hull - obviously, as cats don't heal and spill the wind in the way monos do. Also, I imagine that model may not be too good upwind so you may find you motor more and, I expect the engine is a bit of a heavy drinker! It's a pleasure watching your happiness - I'm very happy too!

Mercedes OM636 @ 1500rpm (which on a Westerly 33 gets you 5.0/5.5kt depending on wind and current) consumes an average of 2 liters per hour. At 2000rpm it'll be up to 2.6lph - and that's with a non-overhauled engine and fuel injection pump, they've got an overhauled everything really so it should end up consuming a little bit less than that. It's not too bad for a 42hp 4 cylinder :)
