Fred you need to invest in some battery disconnects for your vehicles 😅

And yep, new landcruisers are built just as tough. That's why us Aussies love them.

Fun little project. I would suggest a battery diconnect. Not expensive and keeps the battery from being drained. Charge the battery for use. Disconect while parked.

I agree 100%, I have lots of projects and despite ordering parts or whatever to make some progress something else pops up with the kid or something else requiring my attention. I appreciate the reminder to just take small bites on a project. It is so easy to be overwhelmed. For example I have had a 80 gallon commercial air compressor in my garage for a years... Finally serviced it, picked up wire, plug setup, filtration to get it all setup. My old 33 gallon unit finally gave up so its time to get this thing in service. Everytime I want to wire it up, I am needed elseware. Maybe I should just be "sick" and stay home, lol.

I manage some fleet vehicles for my kids and I feel burned out all the time. Just for once I would love to experience having my car fixed for me and just hop in and go. I have used the same technique of getting a few quick things done and then I tell myself, good job, that part is fixed and try to get to another thing. Currently discouraged though. I need to remove the ac and heater coils from under the dash on 1 vehicle and change out a rear main seal on the tiguan and both are a committed endeavor with no real shop or lift and winter approaching in South Eastern Idaho. You gave me encouragement to just get at it today. Thank you Fred.

Thanks for the pep-talk Fred. One of my kids hit a tree with Lil Pete. She was fine, but the truck frame was not. It was an emotional roller coaster ride. I put a bunch of myself into the M1008 and my wife was encouraging me to send it to the wrecking yard. But, I got some good advise from Steel Soldiers members and help finding a frame. It took 8 months but Lil Pete is alive again and now I'm looking forward to doing Mojave Road with family and friends. BTW you are the reason I went to Off Road Design...#crossoversteering

i wish car forums were still big. i remember in highschool i had an el camino and i'd spend all my free time on the el camino forum, the chevelle forum, the protouring and lateral g forums, the yellow bullet forum. just reading every post and learning as much as i could about how to do things and how to make the right combinations of modifications and all kinds of stuff. feel like they aren't as big as they used to be. most of the ones i mentioned are basically dead

so, I'm lucky i guess, built up several rock crawlers (4runner, full size chev), ran the Rubicon (and other trails) several times. i agree, start with a good platform and go from there. currently, i have a '93 FZJ80 (triple lockd)..... and did a good quality 3" lift, on 35's..... and I've had more fun in that than any of the others. the main thing I've found is: build it right from the beginning, and build something (at least for me) that the wife can drive too. the things to remember 1) don't skimp on the important stuff, the thing that leads to burnout the fastest is when every trip feels like a "maiden voyage", and something causes a breakdown every trip out. next 2) get your wife in on it, leads to more support from her when you need to upgrade things. then last 3) build it to drive on the street as good as it is on the trail. i use our '80 year round, sometimes i commute to work in it, then there's snow wheeling in the winter, getting the christmas tree from that spot in the woods where few others can go, going camping in the summer to spots where the masses can't go, going to Fordyce/Rubicon or any other deep woods trail and knowing that you have a high probability that you'll get back home. FWIW: i was at project burnout with the 4runner, when Fred and Dave put the Dirty 80 on Dirt every day, that episode inspired me to switch it up once again. thanks Fred!!!

I hear ya bud , when I got my “ project” this is how I planned it : 1. S10 / Sonoma = plenty cheap and loads of parts . 2. Found the project for the right price $$ . 3. Assessed project. 4. Bought parts from FB / Craigslist/website . 5. Removed engine / trans . 6. Installed new parts . 7. Start again in the upcoming spring. 8. Weld in exhaust. the project : To do list: 1. Install new fuel tank / upgrade fuel system. 2. Plumb cooling system and radiator. 3. Wire motor , distributor , alt and gauges . 4. Double , triple check everything. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and when I get back to after the fall and winter , my motivation will be there to continue and finish . So far I’m into the build for $2,500 Canadian dollars. Cheers 🇨🇦

For some reason your words today ring true in my ear. i thank you for speaking your mind. My project has been getting to me and all the same thoughts you mention come to mind. I call my project my retirement jeep and dont plan on building another one, but like you i like to tinker too much so who knows. Thanks again for the motivational speech. Time to get back to work on my project.

Yeah I finally took this approach to my old daily driver turned project truck. I had really big plans for it which required a lot of time, effort, and money. I finally started doing things little bit by little bit and am actually making progress. I try to spend a couple hours a week here and there, and string out the part purchases.

Fred I would keep the old mirror because you can still use the housing or the electric motor. But most importantly because the replacement mirrors are not as good as the original. You can pop off the mirror from the frame and swap them. So you have a new frame with the original “mirror glass”.

Follow Solomon's project advice. There is a season for everything. Trying to get your rig done before Easter Jeep Safari should start when you got home from the last EJS. And then also, repetition. Make a time, and get something done. For example, 4 nights a week, I get into my shop for at least an hour - sometimes I just get sweeping done, but I got it done. And finally, don't do it every day - no matter the excitement, it will get boring. 3, sometimes 4 times a week I don't go into the shop at all. It's FINE, the projects still get done. And finally, huge projects. Make it run - with the most direct line you can take. Most of my projects are 2-4 years to complete but they run/drive within a year.... it doesn't have to be legal, but not having to push it is huge to getting it done.

Always dig your videos. A buddy of mine had a parasitic draw on his 80 due to the factory alarm system. He was able to disconnect his and it solved the issue. Not sure if your 80 has one but thought I put it out there. Thanks for making great content Fred!

Before I retired it was really hard to get motivated to fix my own junk. Being a professional mechanic you never want to work on your own stuff. Then I am able to retire early. Great, now I can really get back in to wheelin. Maybe build a new truck or a tube buggy. But I find it still hard to get the drive. I just spent more than 30 years doing this every day. Day in, day out. I feel I need to do something totally different for a while. Just to clear my head. There is so much more left that I want to do when it comes to off road trucks.... I really need a kick in the arse.

Fred instead of ring and pinion gears you can get new gears for your transfercase (3.1:1 low range.) Also I put a Spartan locker in the rear axle of my 1994 LC and to my surprise it drives great on road! As it turns out, the AWD acts like an open diff - sends power to the DRIVESHAFT with least resistance - and there is ZERO binding in sharp turns. My next project is to put a wormy limited slip in the front. I’m hoping you consider these suggestions so I can learn from your experience. Good luck!

I like having several projects to work on, when you start to get burned out on one just roll it out of the way and roll something different in. Breaks up the time and keeps things fresh.

Thank you! I’m about to do the same thing. Actually, I’m about to place a rear tire carrier and bumper on my 80, and there is an Australian company that makes direct replacement towing mirrors (electric, in fact) which is controlled by the existing power controller. I’ll be replacing my mirrors with those so I’ll be able to see behind me once I mount a 35 on the bumper, which is definitely going to block my field of vision.

I'm not burnt out on mine, but it's definitely had to sit for a long time with zero progress. Life happens and it's usually when I'm trying to get things rolling. Hopefully soon il be able to at least get it going again.

I've got an 01 Tahoe that sits a lot. It has a aftermarket security system that sucks a bit of power. I picked up a 20 watt solar panel and regulator and just toss the panel on the roof, wire through the window. Plug it into the lighter. I tried those " solar battery maintainers" and they were too wimpy to do the job.

KZbin has gotten crazy. It's hard to watch any channel that has a lot of subscribers, KZbin puts ads every minute and a half to 2 minutes. I know the channel makes some money off the ads but damn, 40 minute video with 15 to 20 ads is a bit much.
