I just bought this model. it’s built extremely well, but I am having a hard time getting down more than 3 inches deep even with the guides lift it all the way up for some reason it doesn’t seem to wanna go deeper. I also thought you were able to reverse the tines by simply switching, the top gear around

Switching top gear does nothing. Need additional gear. Make several passes in both directions.
