Love the video! I concur with you Courtney. I prefer the shear bolt as I'm mowing the same plot of ground for the past 35 years. I know where every hidden hazard is located and I make it a point to correct and eliminate them as I go along. To me the slip clutch is way too much maintenance...loosen, slip, polish and retorque every spring...no thanks. Big Congratulations on the Rhino Hide purchase!!!!

Thanks for such a thorough review, I bought my RC104 based on this review, the pivot point and the 100 lbs lighter weight was the main selling point plus it was a $100 bucks cheaper than any I found. It also is a better built and looking mower. I have hilly property to mow and the pivot point is put to good use. It works great on my Kioti CK20s. Thanks Dirt Dog for this mower and you for the review.

Wish I had seen this before I bought my tractor that came with a cheap rotary mower. I would have realized what I was getting and could have easily upgraded. Very useful information! Thank you! I really enjoy your videos!

I took my slip clutch off and put on a shear bolt brush bull. Now I can easily take off the pto shaft and put it in the shed when I’m not using it. With the slip clutch you never know what it’s going to do after its been sitting a couple weeks!

I'm used to a brush hog with two full sized wings (horsepower was not a concern as I sat in air conditioned comfort). For the smaller ones like this, I would opt for shear bolts and chains if the budget is there. Always remember the turn radius changes significantly with this connected. Watch for digging into the ground. Based on the information you have provided, the Dirt Dog seems like a winner to me.
@szki2722 жыл бұрын
You missed a very important part the underside it is what does the cutting. Also, the frontiers floating mechanism allows the A-frame to fold down for a more compact storage if you have verticle storage.

Great move with Rhinohide... IMO that's a must have! Cooler in the summer, keeps off most of the rain, and has saved my butt more than once in the woods.

Frontier cutters are not made by John Deere, that is the biggest misconception out there. The Frontier cutters are made by Woods MFG under contract for Deere. On another note, I went with a WALCO cutter, less expensive but still a great cutter for 1inch material. The WALCO cutters are built in Canada.
@BillTheTractorMan2 жыл бұрын
@@whiteoakfarmsc2604 absolutely, I spent a year trying to buy a good used one, nearly impossible because they we all so beat to death. I bit the bullet and ordered a brand new unit from my local New Holland dealer. been very happy with my WALCO.
@brianhillis37012 жыл бұрын
Your summary left out the chain advantage and slip clutch upgrades for the frontier and the added flexibility for the dirt dog. The flexibility is a real selling point for maintaining hilly property road and ditch banks and dams and ponds. Have fun with your new purchase. Huge market for zero turns if it can be left on at highway speeds or easily removed/reinstalled and stored for transit.

I've changed my opinion on the manuals in a tube on the brush hog - Mine is somewhere in the forest. Back in to mow under the overhang or up to trees. Must have been ripped off and now lost.
@kdegraa2 жыл бұрын
Good video. In Australia these mowers are called slashers and slashing is a verb used to describe mowing grass on a farm, even if a slasher isn’t being used. Recently I was in the market for a mower deck for my tractor. We bought a finish mower for a few reasons over a slasher. This decision is very unusual where my farm is but I think it’s the right one, hopefully.

Always get chains on a rotary cutter. If you back into a low cut stump concealed in the grass with a metal band on rear of the mower, it’ll bend in and hit the blades. Then you’ll be cutting and welding and replacing the metal band with chains. Been there done that.
@kylerayk2 жыл бұрын
Roger that on the fragility of the metal band. I actually prefer an open rear discharge. I can back into a small tree, fold it over slightly and then the blade tip snips it off.
@halsnyder2962 жыл бұрын
Everytime I mow the tractor tires pop up more rocks… I’ve hit rocks in areas I’ve mowed 40+ times. I consider brush hogs sacrificial. I need a solution to pick up 4”-12” rocks. Our ground is so rocky it’s hard to dig a hole with a backhoe, virtually impossible with a shovel (unless you’re really into exercising with a rock bar!) suggestions welcome! I use a clutch for the brush hog

I had a 6ft Howse with a stump jumper and 100 hp gearbox and slip clutch. The deck was flimsy, so I made an 8ft out of it. Totally fabbed a new deck and put the 3 point, tail wheel and gear box plus the right size blades on it. I used 7ga for top and sides and AR400 angle bolted to the bottom of the sides for skids. I made my own chain guard out of Grade 70 3/8ths chain. I powder coated the deck before final assembly. Total cost was about half of a new 8ft unit. That was 15 years ago. It is still running, though I don't own it anymore.

Your field is fairly level but if you are cutting an area with uneven terrain there are certain circumstances such as a ditch, where you can get the rear wheel of the cutter stuck on one side of the ditch and actually have the rear wheels of the tractor lift off the ground. I prefer a pull type cutter. The down side of a pull type is you are going to need rear hydraulics and you’ll have to purchase an expensive hydraulic cylinder. This will probably only apply to larger farm tractors not subcompacts. Just be aware of this when crossing ditches.
