Man, you are a specialized Car simulation reviewer, you have the experience, knowledge, and not only that, when you criticize something, you do it straight to the point, no exaggerations nor rude language, but also not too soft to the point the criticism is vague, to the point the team at Codemasters could use your feedback as reference for corrections on future versions, or even for fixes via patches. By this Review alone, i can put my expectations to a nice and safe "i will buy this game" state, because I'm into these kinds of games. Great Review Viper! ;)

As others have said its mainly due to suspension tuning. However, also consider all cars run with gravel tires. On pavement these tires don't get great grip compared to road tires, and they also have square edges as opposed to round on street tires, which impacts the straight line stability and tendency to lose grip quicker and more harshly.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it soon. Dirt always brings Nostalgia for me I played the Colin McRae Rally '04 game, when I was around 5 and I've got so many memories. Falling off cliffs in greece, intentionally driving into houses in sweden, literally getting lost in the forest of the UK, because the screen was too dark, while repeatedly killing my engine. All that without ever knowing how to progress in the game, or what progress in the game even meant. I just did shit and had fun. I remember being full of pride when I told my dad I had beaten Sweden in 2:30 minutes and he was just like "What? I dont know if thats fast. Last time you drove into houses and took 25 minutes" and I was just like "It means I'm pretty quick", without knowing if it was quick. It was just my only ever flawless drive on that game... It's fascinating now to look back at these times, not saying they were better or worse, just fascinating how I connect phases of my life with videogames I played

this was the first DiRT game I played and somehow I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I knew it was hardcore which was what I loved about it. The method of how I adapted so fast was by starting with slow cars then working your way up to the suicidal group B cars. But compared to other amazing codemasters games like DiRT 3, this game is amazing to me.

We need Dirt Rally 3.0 with VR support with full PS5 Tempest Engine 3D Audio where you can detect precisely where the sound comes because the sound changes frequencies based on the direction, and there are enough profiles so everyone will get like 99% accurate REAL 3D Audio. Then we need cameras on VR headsets to track our wheel, pedals and gear stick and use that information to map those precisely in correct places and track our hands. So we could see our hands in that VR and move our hands correctly to the wheel and gear stick, without any latency or obscurity in the distances on that 3D space. So we would have to have all major wheels, gear sticks etc. modeled in the game, and have some logic that can put them into the correct place on that car without phucking up the interiors. But that shouldn't be a huge problem. That 3D audio that is mapped based on all the directions of the sound, so that the changes and latency are exact as you would have in real life, essentially is 100% sound immersion. We could hear the direction of our tires spinning and sending gravel to our fenders, hear different hits, potholes, everything. It's much more important in full immersion than people think. And with good VR headsets, having fast enough cameras to track our wheel, gear stick and hands should be possible. As on fast paced game like Rally where our hands would have to hit the wheel and gear stick at exact correct manner to really give us immersion, and not for instance phuck up the gameplay, needs enough cameras enough resolution and enough FPS. Best headsets certainly have that. If the manufacturers of those headsets (+wheels, pedals, gear sticks) would support the game, as this could be the first game that has perfect immersion because when you are driving, you are sitting down, that game could be made perfect. Also perfect immersion happens because we are not using VR controllers, but actual wheel, pedals and gear stick, so we start to accept the VR graphics as reality. And the sounds essentially can be simulated as reality. There are probably not a huge amount of people that would buy this game. But having those PS5 consoles, headsets, wheels and gear sticks in trade shows, and electronic retail shops etc. would boost the sales of all of the above, the game, VR headset, PS5 console, Wheel, gear stick and pedals.

2.0 is a game I really enjoy playing the championship mode on. Just doing the first with the Lancia Fulvia was a real challange, even though I won it by quite a bit. Firstly, I felt quite good in the beginning stages of each event but often would fuck up much more towards the end. I thought I was getting unfocused for the longest time before I went to the "Tyres" page during a service and saw the tyres were completely worn, so I changed them and that was a GREAT difference. I understood what was happening during the later stages of rallies. So that really makes a difference. Other than that I thought the Lancia was very nervous for being a FWD car and the back end would come sliding even on tarmac whenever I went off the throttle, so I went in to tunings for the shakedowns and tried adjusting the chamber and toe ins to make it more stable. Really made a difference aswell! So now I was left with a car that pretty much was doing what I wanted it too. But it took some time. Still have a hard time with the tarmac physics but it might just be tuning to chassies, because it's significantly better in Rallycross. Also it's really unforgiving once you break your headlights and you have one ore two night rounds coming up, so for me it's important to plan ahead and knowing where the service areas come and what to prioritize like "This stage is important to NOT crash because otherwise I will have HELL during the night stages, so if I loose a second here and there doesn't matter too much now, what matters is keeping the headlights intact." Also to stay focused! Can't let off a second because you will crash hard. I found out by running straight off a cliff right before the finish line in Argentina's first stage. Terminal damage, and the second placed AI won the rally so we went in to the last event just 7 points apart, and I broke my headlight in the last 12km long nighttime Aussie stage... Lost 50 seconds but 2nd was enough to take the championship, luckily. Such a great game. I just got it, haven't played a rally game in years. However this game will keep me hooked for a long time I reckon. Being swedish, I really miss the swedish stages though. People talk of season pass and stuff but I have yet to read up on it. Long post but had to share my excitement!

Following the series since the 2.0 back in my pentium 3, I find that codemasters really did a bad job in divide the games and its handling model, I felt the driving the same between 2.0 and 2005. Back then was really enjoyable, but nowadays with more accurate suspension simulation, it's kinda hard to back to them. Still loving the 2.0 for being the first rally game I got to play seriously. The first DiRT is lackluster. The handling model had way more potential than they showed, the graphics had really bad decisions (like the light bloom EVERYWHERE), it's just a product of the initial era of PS360. But, to add to the offense, the career mode is really boring. Jumped DiRT 2 as it seemed more a Tony Hawk's series about rally, got to the 3 where, as an arcade racer, it really did more rights than wrongs. Wasn't perfect, but in the EGO era, was the who pointed more to the right direction than others (even lacking a proper mud stage). Nowadays, DiRT Rally was a gift that nobody expected. Until now, the best showcase of what EGO was really capable, with the physics being really well done, graphics and audio nailed perfectly. It was hard on you, and rough, it was something to finally fight back the RBR. With DiRT 4 and the track generator... eh, the game didn't deserve the backlash, but still a let down. It was a pretty good middle ground between 3 and Rally, but the abscence of real world tracks was felt. Now, what kinda worries me about the DiRT Rally 2.0 is that some problems still persisting, and ones that were solved came back. Like on 7:34, where you go over a big water part, and there's water on the windshield (effect that was implemented on DiRT 2), when they had the care to think about the terrain degradation. Damage, althought it's nice that the game represents the material of said damaged part (if metal of fiber), still presenting really odd behaviours, like glass that fold without shattering, or pieces that deforms in a way that doesn't seems... right. And, the lack of the kitcars class now (with them putting the Clio and Corsa, S1600 back in the DiRT 1, on RallyX), makes the "holes" in the car selection even more apparent than before. Maybe sounds like whining (because it is), but coming from the complete WRC grids on CMR2.0 and 04 to a few cars scattered throught a lot of categories makes the car list feel even smaller (ACAT Mod at least is a godsent mod). I'll give it a look anyway, but I'll hang onto the DRally 1 for now to see where the Codemasters will lead the updates and the DLCs.

While it's true that cars that start very late will have worse conditions on gravel stages, it's also not good for cars to start first either. Rally drivers usually avoid driving first if they can help it because that's known as the "sweeper" or "cleaner" position. In other words, the first driver is sweeping the rocks and gravel out of the way and struggling to get decent grip. And they often try to take good lines to minimize their time loss, which means that later cars can simply follow their tire tracks to not only get good lines, but to also get good grip without the gravel cover that was swept away already. It all depends on the stage and how much gravel there is to sweep away. So for some stages it could be good to start 2-3, and other stages it can be better to start 4-6. I am wondering if Dirt Rally 2.0 makes a distinction between these starting positions? As in, is there a noticeable difference in time from the 1st sweeper position, 3rd position, and very late position? Realistically 1st and late positions should have the worst times.

Nice to see you hopping over to off road stuff! As a lifelong rally fan, I must say this game really is awesome. Sure, it has its flaws and little imperfections, but despite those it just feels so so so good to slide around in the gravel. You can really feel the tires digging into the surface and at all times you know exactly how much traction the wheels have. AI could be better (too fast at night and in the rain, clearly not affected by bad conditions. also, they are too slow in stages with a lot of hairpins and tight corners or maybe I'm just better at those???) and the colors of the game overall are too saturated and unrealistic, but those are really my only complaints! Everything is done with so much love for the genre, all the locations are unique and fun to drive (and realistic!!) and there is a HUGE difference between cars of different eras. A 70's RWD drives nothing like a modern AWD etc., the models are so well done. And all the engine and other car sounds are very satisfying.

@@patrickm4281 It has been proven by a beta tester of the game that what you just said is nothing but a rumour.Even so the rumour doesn't say anything about 4 wheel drifts, but tarmac physics.Which are a bit of a disappointment.

This review of yours about DiRT Rally 2.0 is also very good. There's not much I disagree with. Well done! There is tyre deformation as well. You probably hit something too hard which ripped the tyre off completely. You can also get a puncture where the tyre is still on the rim. Continuing on a flat tyre has an impact on the handling and after while the tyre will completely disappear which makes the car extremely difficult to keep on the road. Maybe a tiny bit too harsh on the FFB. When you find that sweet spot you can feel quite a bit more on gravel compared to tarmac. But yes, overall this is one of its major drawbacks. As I mentioned in my response on your WRC10 video, the tyre model in DR2.0 was primarily developed for gravel and afterwards adjusted to work on tarmac. This is why driving on tarmac feels off. You can solve most of it by setting up your car. It will feel a lot better than with default settings. However from the outside it still looks strange (sliding/gliding too much). If they had managed to get the tarmac tyre model/physics spot on as well as better FFB, this game would have rivaled RBR for that top spot on the rally simulator ladder. I find it very strange that both your DR2.0 and RBR reviews are pretty accurate but you missed the ball quite a bit with WRC10. Again, it's never my intention to tell you how to do this job or things like this because the DR2.0 and RBR reviews show that you do know. Best of luck with future projects.

Is there any physics improvement compared to previous DiRT Rally? In my opinion was DiRT Rally still a bit arcade compared to RBR.

Great review, just one thing. The metro r4 was unlockable in Collin McRae rally 2.0, so technically group b cars made their debut there :)

@viperconcept the name "colin mcrea" dissappeard because he died in a helicopter crash.. and ken block took over the game but wanted to make a tribute to the same by adding it in dirt 2.. as you get to see the tribute video when you completed the game...

Thanks for another great video =) I'm huge fan. I saw a video of you, mentoring GTS for a person and you were teaching him/her car control (oversteer, understeer) and I like that you went to a track with a car that forces someone to learn and apply counter steer and car control.. but I can't find the video =/ can you tell me which videos is? OR which car / track should I use to train car control? (counter steer, over, under/steer) (I think it was ferrari but I don't know)

+viperconcept , do you consider this game as a sim, or an arcade-sim?
@gaminggoose23295 жыл бұрын
Just FYI Viper a couple points you’ve miss spoken on. The tyres do physically squash a little against surfaces, and punctures are very soft and squishy which is noticeable until they blow out from high speed or collision. ;)

Love your channel. Your heel toe is impressive. Wondering why you used your T500 and not your Fanatec and why you didn't set up sequential shifting on the TH8A.

You could argue that DR 2.0 is the "real" game codemasters would have brought. The original Dirt Rally was almost like a beta test for the new physics engine, one reason content was so sparse. It was just a passion project of a few developers within codemasters and nobody expected it to have the success it had. When that happened, mama-codemasters saw it and Incorporated the success into it's future development.
