Thanks so much Jack! And thanks for the insight into the steering rack. Yes, we had quite the time with it in the beginning - a bit "Influenzo-esk" ;) I'm currently pulling the suspension and it is a very interesting job to say the least! I really enjoyed your visit with Iain! That must have been amazing and nerve racking at the same time. Just to be in that shop would be quite the treat! :)

It’s a Ferrari from the period when the cars were mostly hand built and dare I say,lower quality than todays cars. Ferrari made a ton of 308’s due to Magnum PI’s popularity and they weren’t all that mechanically well designed.308’s when driven much are maintenance hogs. Still one of Ferrari’s most pretty cars though,I understand their appeal.

When I was in JR High a US 308 lived at the end of our block. A real beauty, long before Magnum P.I., have desired one since. This is going to be an interesting series, doubt it will kill the desire especially after owning a 2 liter Alfa Alfetta GT for a number of years and knowing the finicky nature of most Italian cars.

I had no idea that you had to go through so many trials on the 308! I knew about the stuck head, but not all of the stripped bolts on the driveline, etc. I had a car that I dreaded working on undernieth because I had to fight everything to get it off! I did learn to use a nut splitter though, which saved the day.

I winced at seeing the head cut off the block, definitely a last resort option. I've removed many Alfa R 4 cylinder heads and tried a number of methods in removing some very stubborn heads, that looked like they were fused to the block. Lots of WD40 down the head stud holes, 2' of nylon rope pushed into the plug holes alternating cyl 1 and cyl 4. Tapping the head with soft pine wood blocks on each end aswell. They do eventually loosen, too late for your project but maybe someone else can try this method. Franny and Heidi you are a tower of energy and ability, plz keep inspiring, educating and entertaining us. John m
@HeidiandFranny

It was a last resort option and the mechanic who did it had decades of experience. The car has been exposed to some pretty extreme conditions. Franny is already running into more issues that deal with humidity and things 'permanently' locked in place. Believe me, we did NOT want to cut off the head.

@@HeidiandFranny If you live in a warm place then the urethane bushings will not squeak. Anything below about 8 degrees Celsius and they begin to squeak terribly and worse with more cold. I used the graphite impregnated bushings which are not supposed to squeak and greased the heck out of them and they still groan when cold. On my Dino I used the rubber bushings and they are silent. It is essential to torque the suspension arms in the loaded position (not under full droop) or the bushings will tear and fail pre-maturely. Given the option I prefer the rubber bushings even if you do need to tack weld them.

Very nice video and best of luck with the project. You may want to do a little more research on the Euro front end. To my understanding the QV 308's depending on the destination market had two different grille/bumper configurations. The one you have is correct and the alternate one you wish to change to would require a different grille, bumper (because the profile is different to fit the other Euro grille), and the fog lights. The lights are normally made by Ciebe and they can be very difficult and expensive to replace. Parts alone could reach $5K. It would be a shame to do all that work to replace something that is correct but a little less common. Personally I much prefer the nose you have and would leave it alone.

Great overview and story. Dirty sounds not good but that one was more than dirty. Looked like he had lived close to a swamp I guess. Everywhere so much dirt. Those cars were never made for that usecase but 36 years later its back in shape I guess. Beautifull pictures of great craftmanship, sad to hear that you had needed so much external help cause that will have made the project a lot more expensive I guess. Funny point or side note: sometimes you have horrible prices to pay (on the Porsche) but sometimes some pieces get refurbished quite cheap - compared to european services. Not judging about the quality just by the prices you mentioned. I love those projects especially on the Porsche of how much you were capable to achieve alone .. great video here and of cause love the porsche series.

I don't like the older Ferrari's and that includes the 308's because of their build quality and unreliability. When new, they were great, but later, not so much. They have just fallen victim to poor maintenance over the years. They are actually quite reliable when cared for. Same goes for the G-body Porsches. Both these cars got a little too cheap and people bought them who weren't able to care for them. Good clean examples of each are getting harder and harder to fine and are fetching some good coin.
