Hi Everyone, Ok, Let's get to work! First order of business - Pull all four corners. It is a bit of work for sure! The suspension is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle and it takes a bit to figure out what comes off first. The front has a couple big ball joints that need to be dealt with. It was entertaining :)
That ball splitter/separate I used in the video: amzn.to/3zXHxKC

You can use two hammers to remove the ball joint if you don't have the tool. Hit the knuckle that the tapered pin goes into at the same time holding the other hammer on the other side so that the shock is transferred directly into the knuckle hopefully freeing up the ball joint. Does usually take about a dozen or so hammer blows. It's nice and easy when you have all the right tools.

That was quite a work out! I now realise why I enjoy this channel. Firstly, you don't buy basket cases. This looks like a lovely example. There are some obvious mechanical problems, but the bodywork and the underside all look very sound. Secondly, there's no guesswork and bodging. You get all the right equipment and tools and do your research to allow you to do the diagnoses and fixes properly. Not all KZbin channels are equal in this respect. Great stuff! This series should be just as enjoyable as the 911.

Yeah, scraping the front end on every speed bump no matter how slow gets old. I have a sump guard that has saved my Alfa many times from potholes and dips. It's the drawback of having a lowered car. I feel that with good, modern tires and a fresh suspention, you will be happy with the ride. My 2cents...

It will be interesting to see the torque values on those nuts when you start putting things back together. A suggestion for 'next time': hit potentially problematic nuts with PB Blaster the night before to give them a little soak. Excellent work!😊

Nicely done and explained. I am not sure who ever said that suspension removal was 8 hours per corner. The first time I did it was on jack stands on the ground in a freezing garage and even then I stripped the whole suspension in much less than 8 hours. That steering rack is shot and I have rarely seen one that bad. Luckily they can be re-built good as new and it is best to send that job out as it can be a bear to open. As for the suspension, if you get the shocks re-built and upgraded to threaded perches that allow you to change the ride height then I would recommend slightly lowering the car. The front and rear motion ratios are different so the amount you drop on the front will be more than the rear in order to achieve the same overall drop. I would not worry about a small drop causing bottoming. Lastly the one thing that made me cringe is when you were putting all that load into the suspension nut with the breaker bar in line with the rear wheel arch. It is not uncommon for a fastener to suddenly loosen or break causing an instant dent in the body. When working on these cars it is important to be vigilant of worst case scenario as is it incredibly easy to do damage from being careless. As an example in my workshop it is a hard and fast rule that you never hand or carry anything over the body of a car; always around. Same with air tools. ALWAYS check them before approaching the car. I have seen lots of tools pop apart from incomplete connections that would otherwise bash a body. Great work and keep it safe :)

Zip tying the shims to the part in order was a great idea! Tucking that one away for sure. For ride height, I think preserving the rest of the car with a little higher ride height makes the most sense. Protects the car/investment and can be adjusted if/when your roads improve. Great video as always; eager for the next.

I worked with a Benwell lift for around 5 years at the start of my career. A 4 post with scissor jacks on the rails, the lift was well built and only made me nervous with a 2 ton rated Ford PU that I was working on for a friend, his tow vehicle and mine occasionally. Missed that lift many times after I left that shop. WOW that rack is lose, it looks internal, manual racks aren't bad to rebuild, the outer bush on the passenger side wears and you get play like that, if it was the mount bushings you would have experienced excessive steering wheel play.

@frankpeutz9106
@frankpeutz9106 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Franny, would without any doubt recondition the Koni's (kind of iconic, Ferrari used Koni's for years - from 1960 - on their street and F1 cars), also ride height is OK wouldn't lower it but also your geometry would be impacted if you did (camber etc. so it would eat up the tires on the inside). Tip: when you are going to assemble all the nuts and bolts again (after you have re-galvanized everything nicely like new) put a little ceramic grease on them then it will never get stuck again (galling). Lubricate rubber parts (bushes etc.) with silicone grease and fasteners with ceramic grease. Good luck with the restauration! Frank

Brilliant work Franny - l like Ms Sophie’s ride height as a mid engined Ferrari needs all the travel the factory set up gave allowing for our rough roads as I’m sure Colorado not as rough as Australia. Mid engined cars need some compliance with the engine and rear weight bias requiring an ability to support a good ride handling balance otherwise too harsh and twitchy I think (I briefly owned a Fiat X 1/9 before it dissolved from rust as live near the sea). A 308 and 328 are my dream Ferrari cars and just loving this series 👍 🇮🇹 and would love to see you try some other 308/328 cars to establish how to best set her up although that may be a tough ask at present :)
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for that! Yes I believe the weight bias is something like 60% rear and 40% front. The suspension is also a bit short-throw so if it starts a bit compressed it will be noticably harsher. I have ridden in a 308 that was lowered maybe an inch and it was quite a bit more firm. Thanks so much for your insight :) F.

One more reason for adjustable right hight is that the factory at this time did not work realy perfekt, so it can happen that with all new still you have a difference at the four corners. With the adjustment you can make it perfekt. If you want to stay close to original you should stay on the original koni.

When you remove nuts from studs on suspension, you should always use Kroil or PB Blaster to prevent thread galling. IMO, dropping the ride height 1 inch would be a nice compromise between performance and the need for suspension travel.

I would certainly add a little WD-40 or similar lube to assist in breaking nuts free. Also an air gun makes short work of disassembly with minimal sweat. As to the ride height, I assume those are OEM springs so I would go with the factory specs for a US version car. Good luck on the project!

Great Job !! I soooo enjoy watching you assemble and disassemble. Methodical and organized. Makes the OCD Side of me VERY HAPPY :) Regarding ride height. I would leave it be. I did the exact same thing you are doing to my 996 Porsche Carrera including inner and outer tire rods ends. Steering rack was solid and no leaks so I let it be. l replaced shocks ( Kept the old Springs). So when it was all said and done, it sat a wee bit high, but the roads in the farming community I live in are rough and wanted to make sure I had plenty of travel between the tires and wheel wells, actually put new tires on with a bit more side wall to give me a little smoother of a ride as well. My car is more of a daily driver than a track car, so I wanted to make sure I reduced the risk of flat tires due to pot holes and a not rattling the fillings out of my teeth. Looking forward to the next segment

Great vid as always. A couple of suggestions: Use cargo straps instead of bungees. They're adjustable, strong, and don't bounce parts all over the place. First like the sound effects on the photos. Was that a Heidi idea? Second you need to look at the size of the new bushings. They are unlikely to be the same size as the originals and that may effect the number of spacers. Remember this in not a Porsche and the parts are not made to the same tolerances which is why there are all those spacers! Powder coating may also change the size or number of spacers too. Always enjoy your videos. Looking forward to more 356 videos. Love that car. Best wishes. Stay safe.

Make sure you get some penetrating oil in between the rear disc and the hub. I liberally lubricated it but there was a lot of unseen corrosion between the two. I had to use a puller to remove the disc and it still was a bear. The discs finally popped of and hit me the head. When they get stuck on they don’t want to separate. I also had a deep euro spoiler as well. I swapped the Konis to QA1s and lowered the car. I never had an issue with bottoming the spoiler out, but putting the car on the lift was another matter. I had to buy extended lightweight ramps to ease the 308 on the lift. It was a bit of a pain and made me not want to take the car off the lift sometimes.

I did change on my 308 to adjustable ride hight shocks because it was always higher in the front than in the rear and it loocked kind of funny. In the rear with more wait the springs over time get more compressed than in the front. It might work for you if you get all four springs new than it should be no problem. I did the hight adjustment so the gap is equal around the hole wheel arche, this makes it best looking. I checked the wheel alignemt after that and it did not change, caster, camber and all other were still in spec. Toe front needs to be adjusted on your car anyways. Be carefulI on the rear toe lining up with the front. I also replaced my steering gear, came from England, was not realy expensive and a big change in the feeling of driving. I am from Austria, our mountain road are nice, but you can not go too low with the ride hight, otherwise the front will always get into the ground and I have the same scrathes on the front wing. All the parts you replace are already done on mine, you will get a big difference after that. It is great watching your videos.

I talked to the shop about than and Bill said he would get me all the specs. They are all lock nuts and I've always thought you can't torque them but I guess you can? Most of those bolts are really just pins and could be held in with a pin. Those sway bars though... Years of micro vibrations really sealed those nuts. I'll clean them up with a die and I think they will be fine. I hope all is well :)

Dropping the ride height and then perhaps changing to larger diameter wheels would only be beneficial if you increased the power and the braking performance with larger brakes. I am on board with keeping the usability that these cars and others of this era had when you could drive and not worry about bottoming out on driveways and rough roads. I am looking forward to the rest of this series as well as the other videos that this channel has in store.

It would be tempting to replace the originals with high performance stuff but that would be a no no in Ferrari world. I could imagine the performance gains but the car would depreciate badly.

That looks really exciting doing that. One question though why would they have different numbered shims on each side ? Wouldn’t that make one side uneven? Or is that what there are attempting to rectify? In terms of Komi adjustable shocks I would not go with those personally. I had them on other cars and I was constantly fiddling with them to get the right balance. And I never knew how the factory would have balanced them. I think the standard OEM shocks should be perfectly fine as well as the OEM ride height.

I think the latter... I believe this is how the alignment is fine tuned.

You said that a previous owner had changed out the Euro front grill to one for the US market. Is it possible they did the same with the suspension? I thought Euro ride height was lower than US spec.

At some point it will be interesting to contrast the Ferrari with the 911 in terms of disassembly and reassembly. Shims in the suspension? None on the 911, lots on the Ferrari….

Great Video - you present the job very well. I have just done a big restoration on my 328 including the same job as you are doing now. It is an early 328 so it is very much like a late 308 QV. Mine is a euro spec as well. Removed the hubs, brakes A-arms, spring coils and carriers - rebuild the brakes had everything media blasted, painted, or replated. Pressed in new bushings and gave it new shocks. I also replaced the steering rack (same as an Morris Mini/Mascot - just with longer threads in the ends). Just a note of caution: When you remove and reinstall the steering rack - there is not much room. It is important to have the steering rack centered before the steering column spline shaft go into the housing. To get some extra room- at least on my 328 - I could push the steering column spline axel up and away from the steering rack housing when the steering wheel was a little off center to the right - but only in this position. Had I known this beforehand I could have saved hours. Finally, I rebuild the drive axels with new CV joints and gaiters. Remember to phase them correctly when reinstalling on the axel. And the 8mm hex bolts are in there tight - but a night of soaking in penetrating fluid, they come lose. The CV joints are the same as an early Porsche 930Turbo - so no need to pay Ferrari prices - SKF and other make them - they are very reasonably priced. I found light scoring in the races on the outer cages. Mine has done 42K miles. I think it is a job worthwhile doing while everything is apart. But check youtube videos/birdman on these common cv joints - they come assembled opposite of how they are to go on a Ferrari. Good luck
