Dirtball BJJ

No-Gi Dirtball Grappling requires a strong grip. Since you aren't grabbing onto a rope-like lapel or collar, you need to make a crushing handhold a necessity. Whether you are grabbing the wrist, the hand, or the foot, you have to be able to hold and control the limb so that you can apply a crushing submission!
Take your no-Gi grip strength to the next level with these 2 exercises.
Note: I am using a thick walled 2" internal diameter PVC pipe as a gripping platform. These pipes are not designed for this sort of use. I have never had an issue with them breaking under the loads I use, but I can't promise they won't. Use at your own risk!

And just like that we've gone from a small niche group to a full-blown movement replete with training goals and protocols with tangible, quantifiable metrics and targets.

Just another day in Dirtball-land!!

In the old days of hockey we used to take the rectangular shaft of an old/broken hockey stick, attach a thin rope to the middle of it, and tie the rope to a bucket full of water, sand, gravel, whatever. You grab the stick and roll the rope all the way up, then all the way down and back up the other way, then repeat until your forearms burn your skin off. It's the wristlock mechanics. So now I've gone from dirtball defenseman to dirtball BJJ practitioner. Not that big a transition really.

That is an awesome exercise. I do that one also, though without the hockey stick. Kills the forearms!!

@@DirtballBJJ doing it w a rope or a length of strong cloth (e.g. an old jeans pant leg) would probably do wonders for grip taking in the Gi. Huge of fan of functional and natural strength training, as I believe every Dirtball should be.

@@avidanelkin4581 I have a Gi sleeve I cut-off that I use for weighted single arm grabs/pulls. Same idea as the pants leg. I'll have to post that one. Agreed 100% on the functional strength!

@@DirtballBJJ a true dirtball, as I genuinely aspire to be, has already ripped several Gis of my own and others thanks to insane grip strength. So torn-off sleeves shouldn't be that hard to come by...

What do you recommend for Gi grip strength?
@DirtballBJJ
@DirtballBJJ 2 ай бұрын
The classic exercise for gi grip strength is doing pull ups using gi lapels as your gripping point. Throw an old gi over a pull-up bar and grab the lapels then either hang or rep out some pull-ups. I also use the sleeve that I cut off an old gi. I connect it to some exercise bands and do static and dynamic pulls. I'll put up a video of that one. Thanks!
