Why do ratchet straps have to be so complicated? They sure seem that way - but once you understand a few simple things, these great devices will be your friend forever!
Which way do you feed the other strap into it? How the heck do you get it to tighten? Why am I ending up with a big wad of strapping around the center of the ratchet? HELP!
In this episode, DirtFarmer Jay will show you the simple steps it takes to set up and use a ratchet strap safely and securely, as well as making it easy to undo and stow for the next call of duty!
You'll understand which way to feed the strap through the ratchet, how much to pull through, and when to begin engaging the ratchet handle. When the job is done, you'll see how to simply release the ratchet and quickly remove all the strapping with a minimum of hassle!
Don't you just love it when you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF? Now, using ratchet straps will no longer be a mystery, but an essential skill you'll use over and over!

Hi Kat. Thanks for writing. I took a load of stuff to the GoodWill store in our small town recently on our trailer. It was tied down with a ratchet strap. A young high school aged boy came out to collect my things. I jumped out to see if he needed any help undoing the ratchet strap and he replied, "Thanks but I just watched a KZbin video this morning about how to do this!" It was DFJs video!! Small world!!

Great job, DirtFarmer Jay! A technical writing professor once used this expression, when reading one of my papers. "Clear if known". This video was awesome. For many years I watched my husband and son use ratchet straps and could never figure out how they worked. My husband has passed away and my son grew up and has moved 50 minutes away. I do not like to ask him to do everything for me. Now I am successfully able to use a ratchet strap. Thank you very much! Never too old to learn.

Ruth, thanks for writing! I'm really glad you found the video to be so helpful to you. We have found that there are A LOT of people that are confounded by ratchet straps. As you know, they are a great device, but figuring them out and using them properly can be a bit daunting! I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Kudos to you for taking the initiative to learn new skills and be self reliant. I'm glad we could help in some small way! Best Regards, DFJ (and Maggie!)

Bless your heart...you made such a complete and easy to understand video on the mysteries of ratchet straps! I am a 70 year old DYI woman and I am going to pull my chain fence back together at the corner (tired of waiting (years) for my son to get it done) so I went and bought a couple ratchet straps today....there were no instructions at all on how use or to thread the "passive" (to quote you) strap etc. I even watched video done by the manufacturer...they did not show all parts for releasing the strap..just said push the release button to release the strap/tension...there is no "button". Your video was so well done and explicit in showing the parts...thank you so much. I do feel like a ratchet strap ninja thanks to you Jay!!

Okay back again to report. I picked up my new ATV yesterday, brought it back in a trailer. I watched this video again the night before. Securing the ATV with the straps was a piece of cake totally thanks to this video. Kept the ratchet handle up, put the end through and back pulling out the slack. Ratchet tight, transport, open handle and pull the upper release, pull the lower release and loose again. Fantastic!!! Thanks again!!!!

Your video saved perfectly functional ratchet straps from being thrown in the garbage. I like the twist tip. Another thing that isn't overly intuitive with these things is you need to pull the strap through before starting to ratchet it to eliminate the slack. Thank you DirtFarmerJay!

Chris, glad to be of help. Another thing we've found is that most ratchet straps will actually release by extending the handle all the open and lifting the release latch that is in the center of the handle. Pulling the ratchet stop on the other end isn't necessary. Best, DFJ

I watched a couple other videos about using a ratchet strap. They talked about basically the same but were missing important details. In your video you took the time to point out the parts and functions of the ratchet. You showed the complete steps of hooking everything together and the extra thing you did was to show what needs to be done at the end of usage. Demonstrating all steps is better than just talking about the steps and procedures. A well done video.

I worked in a Telecommunications Company all of my life. When I retired I got a job at Home Depot. I didn't know a shingle from a 2X4 and yet I was put in building materials. We sold a lot of ratchet straps and no customers knew how to use them. I also used to tether clients purchase to their vehicles and I am sure that I was attaching the ratchet straps backwards. Thanks to you I now have no problems. There are even other Associates that think that I am a pro at using ratchet straps and I am their unofficial Resource person. I thank you for this video. Home Depot thanks you. Home Depot customers thank you. We are all in your debt.

Now I am a ratchet strap ninja. I went and bought a shower kit today and the guy tells me that I need to strap it down. WHAT?! So I bought a pair of straps similar to the ones on your demonstration. I told the salesman to throw all the oversize boxes into the truck bed, and I told him that I would strap them in the parking lot. I didn't want him to know that I wasn't familiar with strapping. After a couple of tries, I did a poor job even after reading the instructions, but now with your very helpful and very clear demonstration, Mr. DirtFarmer Jay, I can strap without worry. WRONG, his first mistake was to show that you have to use the ratchet first instead of throwing the strap over the load. He had the long end of the strap already hooked, that was LAME. The last MISTAKE was to thread the strap TWICE when he could have easily closed the ratchet and feed it ONCE. No wonder he is countryside person, THICK AS A PLANK OF WOOD trying to do a simple task!!!! He should stick to milking his COWS!!!!

Almost 1K comments and almost 1 million views!! I’d say I’m not alone when it comes to this topic. Like so many others have said, thank you for a very clear demonstration of how to use ratchet straps. I recently had the opportunity to use them and ended tying knots rather than ratcheting. As one guy said, now I get my man card back. Thanks again, DFJ!

Excellent! I knew it had to be easy, my sons try to make it out as something I can't comprehend...and I can't when they attach and detach so swiftly it's just a blur...well, too bad now, granny's on the move, loading them kayaks all by meself! Bwahahaha! Thanks Jay!

Leigh - glad to be of help. I use this ongoing, including 4 or 5 loads in the last few days. Once you get the hang of it, you own it and you'll have better secured loads that you've had before. Don't forget to twist the strap once to eliminate wind noise! Best, DFJ

Grandpa , tell me how you made this wooden box 'container' please ? would you make specific video for it ? sharing plans ?
@DirtFarmerJay

@pika9985 - good to hear from you. Let's see if we can make a episode on the construction of these types of containers. They are an efficient use of material, work really well, and allow stacking as well. We have a full production schedule and plan right now, but I'll put it on the list! Best, DFJ

Releasing it wrong. You don't use your fingers to release, it automatically releases when the ratchetting handle is fully opened position. Keep your fingers out.

I got a ratchet strap because it looked like it would help hold in a warped door panel to be glued. Not too proud to say I couldn't figure it out until I found your video. Now it works just as I hoped. Thanks!
