Thank you! I bought a heavy duty press from another company and they could not explain clearly how to use it! Turns out they sent me grommets that didn’t fit the dies. Now i know how to use it when my new grommets arrive!

Man, I want one of those machines! I have absolutely no need for it, a manual set like the first one is all I need to repair or modify tarps occasionally, but I'm a sucker for cool tools. Funny that I just found this video when I had to customize a tarp for my pickup the other day by adding a couple of grommets where I needed them.

That's a great question, and I've puzzled over the issue of the grommets simply cutting a bigger hole in the material if I pressed or hammered them too much. Maybe plastic washers are needed to prevent this.

Hidi Ray I mean Jay. Atleast I didn't call you Faye..Seeing your video remind me of making tarps out of Vinyl Swiming pools, or large swiming pool vinyl. . You can go buy these heavy duty tarps starting at $21 to $44 , and you may get maybe 1 year before they are toast after sitting out in the sun all year. My wife found an old round pool someone was throwing away. It last 6 years before it gave it up. I used it to cover a barbecue pit. It set out in the sun all that time.

I have both types. With the small set, I seem to be able to control the pressure better. With the machine, I either don't get it tight enough, or the grommets split on the wrong side, which is bad, because I sew garments, and the splitting would scratch the wearer. :(

Norman, if you are doing a lot of this and doing this ongoing, I'd invest in a basic grommet machine that punches and clinches the grommet all in one step. The brass colored grommets tend to be stronger for punching through vinyl in my experience. I hope that helps. Best, DFJ

Depends on the thickness, but the grommets tend to be light gauge, and designed to cut through thin materials. It could work, but it's likely it won't. Best, DFJ

Most likely not, but you can mark out the piece you need to install, and use scissors, or clippers to precut the hole. After that, install the grommet in the usual way.
