Esther's mother, Carla Emery was a pioneer in the back-to-land movement. I bought her book in 1976. Esther is an inspiration in so many ways to women who are strong and put their family first. I admire her greatly!

I lived in a 10x20 trailer in Idaho, OMG it was a hard situation. The past ten+ years I have been renting a mobile home and paid unreasonable rent to finance the property owner's dogpile empire. I was able to buy a small house on some land and its less money than paying rent, only to pay rent forever... I completely understand the debt free concept and building your place on a budget. Working on getting my debts paid off. There is a book called THE CONSPIRACY OF CREDIT that outlines being slaves to the banks through debt.

So good to see rocket mass stoves being shared for how wonderfully efficient and effective they can be. Your mom will live in my heart and mind forever. I love her cookbook. It makes me smile when I see young people homesteading. I am nearly 70 and have been off grid since 1977, but not in the same place. When I started it was wood stove & kerosene lamps. Then it was Solar panels and DC power. Now at 68 I have hydro electric AC and my own gas well. 1382 acres with 3 houses a big shop and 2 barns. All with my Utilities. I do have satellite TV & internet cell phone & CB & Ham radio. I have a cash crop of grass hay that pays the Taxes and other outside needs. Life is a ongoing Learning experience. My house is as if I live in town. I have a large in ground swimming pool with hot tub. I live in Northern Arkansas and yes I have Air conditioning and gas heat. Even though I don’t have utility bills I still have to do maintenance on the equipment that gives me this freedom. On the 4th of July all my family will be here 7 children with spouses and 10 grandkids and even my x-wife & 91 year old mothermother in law will all be here. “Wish me luck? “ keep the faith & never stop Learning.

Solar doesn't have to cost thousands and thousands of dollars. Just don't buy harbor freight panels. They don't have good output. Go ahead and get the 250s off Amazon. Two of those would suit you well. I offset the battery cost of course without any services. We use 8 deep cycle in series with 2 converters. With led lights,an RV clothes washer,tv, and gadgets,we can operate approximately 5-6 days without charging. Now that was just basically testing the system. Without professional install, you can set up for around 1700 dollars. Or in my figure lol,less than 1year on service. Maybe this helps you somehow. Good luck, enjoyed your video.

Charles Moore Because it's illegal in all of America. Go to a country where there's true freedom and off grid is legal. Don't bother trying to off grid in America, it will only get stricter. Off grid In Mexico or New Zealand. Invest in a cheap RV trailer under 2,000.00 and live off the RV camps.

They're in Idaho where building codes are municipal not state. Also a yurt staked to the ground would be considered a "temporary structure" and depending on the region may have a different building code or none at all. Where I live there's no code but there is a time limit for temporary structures.
@Rick_Sanchez_C137_6 жыл бұрын
Idaho county, Idaho has no code. Half the counties in Missouri have no code. All of Alaska minus eight cities have no inspection so code can be ignored. Still at least one county in Arizona with no code, and several counties in Nevada with no code...... so anyone that says it is illegal to build what you want how you want in America doesn’t know the whole story.....

Why does RACE have to creep into this? You might be debt free, but you’re full of racist bullshit and that’s worst! I wasn’t going to comment, because you made a partially decent statement until you spewed that negative hook. This country was built on the backs, heads knees and any other part violated, of Native Americans and Black Slaves! So be mindful of the people you criticize; they provided the comforts of an Entitled living to people that treated them less than human. Thank you for Not being a Democrat!

Using starting batteries for PV storage will work for a short time in a pinch, or when first starting out. I have heard of them lasting a few years, but with any real use, expect a year or less. The best deal in PV storage at present is the "saltwater batteries" made by Aquion, but unfortunately Bill Gates got his greedy little fingers into that company and they had to file chapter 11. They are reportedly re-forming and should resume manufacturing these beauties soon.

I am originally for a rural area and use to hunting, fishing and tending to a garden. You good folks seem to of adapted very well. Good luck in the future. P.S. Firstly you need to BUY a land , then how do you make a living , how do you make money ? Where do you do your shopping for food ? What if there was no electricity available that far into nature ? And the Toilet and drainage ? This idea is good for warmer climate , and for Canadian climate you need to build a very warm house against the deadly cold .
@dougmc6666 жыл бұрын
There's this idea "self sufficiency", where you take a bare piece of land, no power, water, sewer, build a cheap yurt and an outhouse. You start a youtube channel and write a book to pay for it. This isn't a warm climate, Idaho is on the Canadian border, so when there's three feet of snow, you'll want to put another log on the fire so the deadly cold doesn't get you.

@dougmc6666 жыл бұрын
The little power cubes put out a limited amperage, sort of a poor mans charge controller, the straight connection to a 12v battery does not limit amperage, try this at your own risk.

Yes, it could to be regulated... but not necessary, most devices are 'smart' and discontinue charging when they reach their optimum charge capacity.

I had the means to buy a home in the city. In this village 70380 you could easily live without a car. If I got rid of my car I would save a lot of money but I really would hate to pedal in the weather for every move I made? Not sure just what I spend on my car each year guess I can come up with an estimate? My realistic estimate is $150 a month I would save if I did not have a car ? Sure I don't spend $100 a month on fuel but you have to figure things like tires batteries etc I probably spend a lot less than $150 a month but I rather budget for too much expense than not enough . The home I bought is not considered a live in home it has damage. I do have running water power sewer and garbage collection service. Here I pay about $80 a month for this service. In my last home I had to pay $45.77 just for sewerage? then I had to pay separate person for garbage and they did not provide the service my current location does. I have a camper on my property that I could stay in but not lawfully according to the zoning. I can store it but not live there so I don't live there I store it there and I have options that if it was not there I could not do. I could do my life minimalist but I rather not do it. As long as I have the means I will use the power provided by the grid. If I have to I can do that I have done it too but rather not. A device I have that makes off grid living much better is my clothes spinner I can hand wash clothes then sling them nearly dry where they spend very little time in the sun to be ready to store. This spinner is a centrifuge that spins the water out of the clothes. Takes time to use it takes effort so I just use the washing machine I own rather than do all that work. I do what I do the way I do it for savings that is my bottom line sure I could save a lot more money but I want a level of comfort and where I am now is just right for me . Sure I could do better here or there and save more money but if you have nearly $900 of flexible money each month you have incredible flexibility. I will focus on saving till I reach another emergency fund level I feel safe with once I get there I will return to spending as I feel. I think I will invest in a cover for my camper so it will not leak seems the slide will leak in a hard rain and best way to combat this is just get a good cover for it and I can have that problem solved.

It's bad enough enough that I wake 2 or 3 times a night to go pee but then top that off by having to put on boots and a coat and walk outside to go potty and it's not even that close to the house???? My husband wouldn't get any of my goodies till he built a closet with a pot in it IN THAT ROUND 1 ROOM. Lol that whole outhouse struture would be in that 1 room if I had to do it myself and husband would have a tent where the Porta potty was outside. Lol
