bentonite ,or flyash,my opinion is that crack needs some fine fill ,not to seal it as much as to give a foundation for your clay seal.otherwise ya just lookin at another sink hole once the water pressure builds.,this should be interesting to watch

My thoughts exactly. Bentonite can be a good friend if used right and it's cheap.

Flyash? I've dealt with flyash clarifying ponds and have never seen one hold water. Bentonite, Definitely agree with that.
@mangrove213 жыл бұрын
@@jdelbrid flyash {from coal power plants} comminly used as a filler in concrete can do a good job,,as long as its mixed in with a binder,,aka damp clay,,,not so much as water proofing,but is a filler and a base to fill those voids,,then use clay or bentonite to do the sealing

I have been watching your videos a couple of weeks, Mostly out of order though. Just found this one, and had already watched y'all working in this area. I noticed you said you would have investigated that ditch first. Sad the other guy wasted Matts money in building the dams for no reason. I have dreamed of getting a skid steer and a mini ex and starting a small business, but just watching you work, I have learned there is a lot more to it than just being an equipment operator. I think I will just stick to small jobs with my tractor. Enjoy the videos.

I have a problem with my pond on the 40 acres I recently purchased for bow hunting. Previous owner stated there was beautiful brook trout in it and was 14 feet deep at one time. I have natural Springs on my property that is the head waters for a well known river in Wisconsin. There is a culvert at the ingress of the creek and a culvert at the egress at the end of the pond about 100 yards away. The problem is a muskrat den that has collapsed the dam near the egress and the water drains from there instead of the culvert leaving the egress culvert high and dry two or three feet. The muskrats are no longer a problem but too little too late on m6 part. I have a video of when I first purchased the property of around 150 Wood ducks on it and a Wood Duck house that was used every year I’m thinking more than once. Enjoyed watching them from the cabin window along with other wildlife, Turkeys, Hurons, etc. What would you recommend? I have a dirt shovel!😃lol!

That reminds me of an old farm pond on our farm that has the same issue. It’s on the Mt Carmel fault line and it’s a shear change from limestone to sandstone Only way we got it to hold was to bowl it with clay, but it takes a lot of it and that looks like something you don’t have enough of unfortunately
@Rorschach10243 жыл бұрын
Here in the Houston area, there is no bedrock. EVERYTHING is loose fill. So every floodwater retention pond (and we have thousands because it is flat and barely above sea level) are lined with compacted bentonite clay, geofabric, and another layer of compacted clay.

That is one big undertaking Mike. Bottom line, if anyone can seal those cracks, it will be the DP team. Southern Indiana has a lot of caverns and limestone quarries that can make a person disappear forever. Awesome video Mike. Looking forward to seeing the next chapter of this one..🇺🇸🇺🇸
@kevingalat47203 жыл бұрын
Being a scientist that actually reads and reviews scientific literature on this southern Indiana is a karstic region. In this case with the rock this close to the surface with different rock layers the only way to permanently seal would be to excavate deep enough to key a hydraulic cement plug to wedge into the rock and have the plug extend under the dam and cap with clay. If one just used clay without support with the rock voids the cap would fail within a few years. The dam weight has to be taken into account along with the weight of the water. Water erodes rock and can erode concrete as well. So the plug has to extend as far as the lake is long and under the dam as a foundation to prevent piping water from undermining the dam.
@kevingalat47203 жыл бұрын
Dams do fail and when they go the results are destructive. I have a book about floods that describes what happens when dams fail. My recommendation is to excavate the garbage out and grade to maintain the area and remove the dam. The surface water going into the ground becomes ground water and you don’t want to contaminate that.

Here in the south west Missouri Ozarks where the ground is 90% rocks and 10% dirt , Contractors use Bentonite to seal pond bottoms. I think it comes out of north east Oklahoma? A local game ranch dug a 20 acre lake and discovered it to be over an under ground river. They sealed the bottom with Bentonite. It's pricy , and I expect Matt is not yet a millionaire though his pond site "would be " a million dollar view ! On my farm the bottom of a hand dug well fell out into a cave overnight. Take care where you park the 120 and the 850 !

DP, just a random thought. Pump some "hydraulic cement" down there (not sprayfoam). Then cover with clay. But that sandstone could still be an issue. In the Virgin Islands we use a lot of hydraulic cement because the island is just rock. No clay or topsoil. We create ponds for rain runoff erosion control in pure rock and fill rock split viens from mechanical weathering with hydraulic cement. Just thinking as we watch 😕
@billvandorn53323 жыл бұрын

If it was mine and the money to pay for it was available, I'd say dig the entire bottom of the pond out to the rock and put a 2 to 4 foot red clay cap on the entire thing to make sure there wasn't other areas in the rock that had holes and cracks the water could escape from. Take all of what you dig out the bottom of the pond and fill in the borrow pit where the clay is coming from. Very expensive to do all that though. I definitely agree with what you said that if it will hold water it will be a beautiful pond and area there. Hope it works out and Matt gets a wonderful pond there in his back yard. Great video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and videos. This sure is an interesting one, hoping you didn’t just leave us with a cliff hanger ending. It’s probably a good thing that wasn’t in my backyard, I probably would of had a hard time resisting the urge to put some flammable gas in the hole with a spark ⚡️ just to see where else it comes to the surface. Sort of like the tool they have for collapsing prairie dog tunnels. I think they said it uses a propane and acetylene mix. Open up a big enough hole and he could have a cave tour attraction to complement Kleeman’s campground. Wishing you and your family the best and a Merry Christmas. 🎄

@@GeneralPurposeVehicl Well a good contractor would have gotten a geo surveyor in there before ever starting but I guess he got what he paid for. A cheap half assed job, I mean who the hell leaves so many stumps and trash behind? At the minimum they should have brought in a bunch of clay to create base before putting some dirt back over it, though from the looks of it they'd need to use some hydraulic concrete to create a good base for the pond.
