I'm 60 and looking for a job. Got 30+ years operating equipment and am a big joker when it's time to have a little fun with the boss. The last thing I ran was an 11 but can run many different prices of equipment and even a hand shovel,.. And I got to have at least $60 an hour.. and if you read this far, I'm retired and loving it. Did I get ya!!!!! Lol. Great job on the hope and not letting anyone in that hole!!

Some years ago at my place of work, contractors dug a 20' X 20' X 20' hole inside the factory building finishing just before the Christmas break. This was going to be filled with reinforced concrete to provide a massive base for a hydraulic rig that would perform accelerated durability on vehicle components. When we returned to work after Christmas, a 40' high floor to roof stanchion, which was situated about a metre from one side of the hole, had collapsed into the hole making a huge area of flat roof sag. Plus a lot of the services like steam for heating, compressed air power and water that run just under the roof had been ruptured. Thank goodness the 7000psi 3" hydraulic lines that drove the rigs, were at ground level, because they made an incredible mess when they let loose (usually from operator error opening the wrong valve). The repairs took months and cost millions. AFAIR the hole was not shored or braced in any way, and that stanchion must have supported tons and tons. I don't remember what sort of footing it had beneath the floor. All I can say is that you were probably right when you told your man it was too dangerous to go into the hole, but that was a smart move shoring up the side nearest the building for when he did go down there. I was still nervous seeing the truck driver put down his jacks so close to the edge of the hole, and that it was pretty much inevitable that the was a minor collapse. I know your gut was telling you that the truck driver was too close, so you probably need to trust your judgement and speak up if that happens again.

Trevor. Was that by any chance in the UK,? Worked on one exactly like that. brought all the 6' Hydraulic Mains down. We had to re-run the lot. ps. .. Mike. Great job.!!

@@davec7104 Ford Research & Engineering/Product Development at Dunton in Essex in the UK. We call the area the Rig Shop, but it's proper name was probably something like Accelerated Durability. @TrevorDennis1004 жыл бұрын
@@davec7104 Goodness. It's a small world all right. After reading your comment I realised that the bed plates all had walkways between them, so the hydraulic pipes would have to have come from overhead. I imagine that the pumps (there were either two or three of them, and they looked pretty big to me) would have been shut down over Christmas, or at least have had a cut out if they detected zero back pressure. I dread to think what it would have all cost!
