This is the full version of the 3hp Dirty 3hp Briggs & Stratton engine for those who have not seen it yet.
I used this small engine to test the small compressor in my previous restoration. I had a choice between this one and the Honda motor. This had to be split into two parts due to the length of the video and I am also waiting for parts to arrive (the carburetor diaphragm) In the meantime please enjoy part one of the project.

You should really follow the Briggs manual for reassembly, for the torque sequences on the side cover and cylinder head (you typically criss cross the bolts to tighten) and use a torque wrench

Should have fixed the dent on the blower cover! You can tap it out with a round ended punch or use Bondo or even JB Weld.

Pretty sure my childhood gokart (handed down from my parents childhood) has the same engine (minus the exhaust) - trying to get it up and running for my own child now...know nothing about engines so lots of youtube. What is the model for this? Trying to find a replacement carburator.

Probably something to do with the rotation of the flywheel and the vibrations.

You can’t enamel the engine it self.

Yes...but, it's a matter of personal preference. But I would have converted to electronic myself.

drain all the old oil, and then fill up until it's almost pouring out of the fill tube. That is the correct level.

I've always wondered about something. Could a small engine fly wheel be copper plated to prevent rusting or would it just be a waste of time?

Yes I am sure it can be plated, I have seen guys chrome it.

I have personal contacts close to me that regullarly sell parts and I get the stickers printed profesionally!

Did measure the air gap with page of paper, the flywheel should in first then the magneto.

No, as long as the flywheel does not hit the coil you are good to go. I have a 5hp briggs that has a air gap as big as it can be and its been running like that for 3 years and no issues.

Fantastic video! I recently reworked the vertical drive version of this exact same engine, but my results were nowhere near as beautiful as yours. I need to convince my wife that I need a powder coat setup lol. I was wondering if you could tell me where you got the replacement stickers, as I have had no luck finding them.

On the top it has a lever that kills the spark by shorting out the plug.

Anytime I polish or clean the metal I finish with clear coat to prevent new oxidation.

I bought a second-hand Briggs and Stratton rototiller/cultivator back in the '90s, every end of the season I would run the carb dry and store the machine in a small shed on the allotment covered with an old carpet,25 years later I sold it to a young chap because my back is just not up to planting potatoes anymore ..NOT once in over 25 years did that little machine not start after the second or third pull, there was one year were I had broken my leg and it had sat in the shed for 12 months, new petrol, oil check .... first go, brrr....... second brrr.... number three BROOOOOMMM,these motors just keep going and going,I made sure the young chap knows the laws about keeping a carb clean and I hope he has many a good harvest

Its the original bolts that I cleaned up and electroplated to give them the factory finish.

I remember my old go-kart being powered by one of these suckers. over 20 years of use and that engine never died. it was a wonderful restoration, although I would have chosen the original black color.

@@AJRestoration According to legend, the Briggs and Stratton engine was designed so perfectly, it cannot be destroyed. My engine in particular, against all logic or reason, ran without motor oil... And it still held it's power!

@@LordQuintix My riding mower has a 11 hp Briggs and Stratton engine from an 80s Snapper rear engine, and it slowly leaks fuel and oil, but it won't stop running. I also have a 80s Homelite tiller with a 3 hp Briggs and it runs on starting fluid, but once I rebuild the carburetor, it should run like new!

Get an ultrasonic cleaner bro. Makes no sense going low tech when cleaning the bolts at 19:20, esp after going high tech with the sandblasting and parts washer. 🤔

I have an old Briggs & Stratton engine to be restored. It is attached to an old tiller which also needs to be restored. It worked great for decades before its age caught up with it.

Do it bro! Garden tillers usually have very low hours on them and they probably just need a little bit of attention and a carb kit is always a good idea because stale fuel always mucks things up.

Where on earth did you find an engine with so few running hours? The only wear was to the paint job! The insides of the engine was still brand new!

I know, this engine is still in almost perfect condition inside. I still start it up every now and then. Starts up first pull every time.

A lot of them are like that! Keep looking, the best low hours engine would be a garden tiller engine. Only used once a season for an hour(?) and sometimes not even that. Lots of smaller front tine tillers use 3HP
