His cousin told baby that they were a couple when they were younger... so it definitely makes sense that there could be unresolved feelings, why the chemistry is off the charts, etc. I would definitely feel uncomfortable if I were baby. She's an inexperienced kid when it comes to guys because of her overprotective parents... never really dated, still a virgin, now falls for a older man with tons of experience, sleeps around, has the interesting friendship with his gorgeous, sexy ex who's a phenomenal dancer, and they're about a decade older than her... not to mention at first she is the perfect example of classic NERD 🤓 LOL

Considering the night before they had sex for the first time they felt very awkward. That’s how I read this scene anyway and why baby and Johnny were acting the way they were.

She's not jealous but they are both trying to not let on that they don't have feelings for each other and they slept together the night before-- which is even more awkward since Penny just had an abortion (pregnancy being caused by sex and all...) But they aren't allowed to have a relationship because of him working there, plus it's found upon with class differences and age difference (maybe... she's 17 or 18 and about to go to college in about a month, but she was a virgin, and she's "innocent" and naive, etc. Basically johnny can get in a lot of trouble. And they both know that. But johnny is actually the one who wanted her to tell her dad later, but she was afraid to. So they are both super stiff and awkward around each other... so much so that it's obvious and Penny tells him. "You gotta stop this." Because he has a lot to lose and she also thinks he's gonna get hurt. (Just like Robby hurt her, she thought he loved her but he was just "slumming" and I'm sure she thinks Baby, nice as she is, is just looking for an experience, which might even be true to an extent.) She just can only see it ending badly for johnny. (Which it does).

She wasn't. They edited in that "you make me sick" from a different scene. Baby wasn't upset with Johnny for visiting Penny... they were just uncomfortable because they were trying *really* hard not to show that they were starting to develop feelings for each other. She didn't know he was gonna be there and he didn't know she was there. They were so stiff and awkward that Penny knew anyway.

It shows what few options were available to women in those days. Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion ten years later in 1973 was a landmark decision. The supposed “doctor” that we don’t see of course was a butcher. Penny was lucky to survive.
