So you're a Communist, then? The Soviets believed in the Dirty Harry technique. When planes started being hijacked regularly, the Soviets declared an official policy: you hijack our planes, you die. No exceptions. They didn't care if they had to shoot through a plane full of children and puppies to get you, you died, 100% of the time, period. People learned quickly the Soviets weren't bluffing and would accept whatever collateral damage they had to in order to kill hijackers every single time, and they stopped hijacking Soviet planes.

Am I the only one who noticed? Just before this scene in the San Francisco airport early in Magnum Force, Harry walks toward this situation while a female voice PA flight call sounds in the terminal: - “flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5; all aboard please …….” For you Steve McQueen fans, 5 years earlier in Bullitt, McQueen plays another San Francisco homicide cop who late in the film was also in the San Francisco airport, and just before Robert Vaughn walks up behind Bullitt, you hear in the terminal a female PA announcement: -“American Airlines flight 577, Electra II flagship service for Washington may now be boarded through gate 5; aboard please ….. .” Yes, it’s the exact same announcement.

In fact, Eastwood was suggested as a replacement for Sean Connery when the original 007 didn't want to do the role anymore. Eastwood declined, though he conveyed his gratitude, because he felt that the Brits would resent "some Yank" taking over the 007 role. He suggested Roger Moore, but Moore was still under contract to do "The Saint" and talks to buy it out were fruitless. Hence George Lazenby for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". FWIW, before the late Christopher Reeve became iconic in the Superman role, Eastwood was also approached for it. By then, having gotten away from the "Spaghetti Westerns", which alone would get him a square on the Walk of Fame, Eastwood had the "Dirty Harry" series under his belt, had made a social commentary flick ("Play Misty for Me"), an unconventional action film with George Kennedy (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot), and produced and starred in a grittier western (The Outlaw Josey Wales) and even a different cop genre (the Gauntlet). There was seemingly nothing that Eastwood COULDN'T do, but just as he felt that 007 wasn't right for him, he likewise felt the "Superhero" role wasn't right for him. As the tagline in one of his films put it..."A man's gotta know his LIMITATIONS."

It probably would be temporary...whereas whatever the hijackers had in mind would likely have been PERMANENT. You can also bet that unless the attending physician at the Coroner's office finds the slugs that came from all weapons fired, that 'bird ain't flying, as who knows WHERE they ended up! Same reason firing any sidearm in an aircraft, especially AIRBORNE, is a BAD idea...not that if the cabin is punctured that you'll see something like at the end of "Goldfinger", with a hulking man sucked through a hole half his cross-section size, BUT, hit a hydraulic line, or, God forbid, penetrate a fuel tank (airliners tend to use "wet wings" which aren't self-sealing like combat aircraft) or hit a turbofan impeller blade, and you've got TROUBLE.

The optimal way to show Clint Eastwood on the wide screen is to place him in tight quarters with several other people, preferably men, who are shorter in height than Clint's 6'4 exterior.
