You will want to go down the Dirty Loops rabbit hole! "Breakdown"... and definitely "Work Sh*t Out" to start. Plus... there's more from this combined ensemble that's phenomenal... "Follow The Light". It's stank face worthy.

So glad to see you guys discover Dirty Loops! I hope you continue the DL journey. I'm here as an Angelina Jordan fan but also a big fan of Dirty Loops. Try Follow The Light next. Jonah is a phenomenal vocalist, Aaron the best drummer I've heard recently, and Henrik is of the charts of bassists. You won't be sorry if you do another!

So lovely to see someone discovering Dirty Loops for the first time and have their mind blown. I wholeheartedly agree with everyone else in the comments that have said you need to check out some more of their stuff. They started the band as a hobby project in 2008, and never thought it would be anything other than that, and did twisted jazz fusion covers of top 40 pop songs. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so you could pretty much pick any song to listen to, and you more than likely would not be disappointed. My personal favourite is one of their more jazz fusion-y pieces, "Work Shit Out", but if you want more of the insanely funky stuff, then maybe go for "Next To You" or "Rock You". Another song from the collab album with Cory Wong, that is well worth checking out, is "Follow the Light". They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their mid-to-late-thirties. Jonah Nilsson(keyboard/vocals) and Henrik Linder (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron Mellergård (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production as his main subject. Believe it or not, but Jonah says the piano is his first instrument, not the singing. He comes from a family of classical musicians, and has sung in choirs (mostly chamber choirs) his whole life, but started studying the classical piano when he was 11 and then switched to jazz mid-highschool. When they started the band he had never sung lead and didn't even know if he could. These dudes are ridiculous! 🤯 I think the original tempo is a tad slower, just like you said, but I'm wondering if the reason it feels so much livelier has more to do with the fact that they've changed the 4/4 to a 12/8. Either way, I just love how much funkier it is. And, sorry to disappoint, there are no french horns in this (and as a french horn player myself, I really wish there was, haha). The Bond-esque breakdown does have a double-bell euphonium though, which is so cool, so I guess they're forgiven. And the switch from trumpets to flugelhorns (and also saxophones to flute and clarinet) in that part makes for a lovely change of tone as well.
@fiddlestix3025
@fiddlestix3025 Жыл бұрын
Super comment, as always Lotta-. What really strikes me, is how this arrangement seems to take us back in time during that breakdown. They’re changing the brass from the jazz setup to a classical setup. The chords and harmonies change to what reminds me not only of James Bond (BP1, I agree ;) but even of Wagner and Strauss and those dudes -a whole crazy journey. Then they mess with the rhythm feel and it does my head in completely… 🙃 Luckily tho, they come out all jazzy again at the other side 🤣👍🎷 Also, I have a feeling that they do take that whole thing a tad faster than the original, purely in bpm…but who cares! DLoops could take any tempo and make it feel like the happiest version of Thriller :) xxx
@lottawiklund8606

@@fiddlestix3025 Yeah, I tend to feel that interlude in more of a 3/2 than a 12/8. Can’t for the life of me understand how Aron manages to play both 3/2 and 12/8 simultaneously there. What kind of witchcraft is that? I must say though, my opinion on that is probably not worth much as I suck so bad at disconnecting my limbs from each other. I took a conducting class in music college and I was easily the worst student that semester, hahaha. And yeah, I think I did check the bpm at some point and i have a vague memory of it being something like 10 bpm faster in DL’s version (don’t remember exactly), but the 12/8 makes it feel as if there’s a bigger difference than that.
@fiddlestix3025
@fiddlestix3025 Жыл бұрын
@@lottawiklund8606 definitely, that shuffle tempo gives you a faster feel than the same tempo would in 4/4, interesting hey? And you having had conducting lessons -I always wanted to take a crash course in it but it’s so damn hard - imagine the poor orchestra 🤣 I’d need to grow a few more brains like Aron 😂 (or like Jonah, playing the keys and singing at the same time…) Well we can’t be geniusses at everything, gotta suck at something haha 😇
@lottawiklund8606
@lottawiklund8606 Жыл бұрын
@@fiddlestix3025 Well, it was a very basic conducting class and also during the pandemic (I went to music college at quite a higher age than most of the other students 😬😁), so we only got to conduct an “ensemble” made up from the students of the class, and to symphony orchestra recordings. No orchestras were hurt in the process, I promise! 😂

9.7 - not too shabby 👍 I always tend to give it a 15 out of 10 😉 Thanks for a great reaction to one of my favourite pieces by one of my fave bands. They took Thriller, decided to swing it in 12/8, add some jazz and funk and turn it into a party! Yes, Henrik slaps hard. He elevates everything they do onto the next level, I find. And Jonah can sing, for sure. Aron, their drummer, -one of the best. Then you add Cory with his horn section, -what possibly can go wrong? ;) At the time of the making of this, Dirty Loops and Cory had never met in person. These were the lockdown years, and so they wrote, arranged, recorded AND filmed everything on two different continents -Cory & horns in Minnesota, and DL in Sweden. They FaceTimed each other, sent sound files forth and back via email, and so on. Both bands bought the same props, set up the same lighting and camera angles, etc. When it was finished, Aron (DLs drummer) edited all the footage to make it look as if they were playing on the same stage. Information overload, I know…. 🤣 Check out “Follow The Light” and “Turbo” from the same collab. Thanks again for a great reaction and great comments 🙏☺️

They have some well-known songs in their repertoire by Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Lady GaGa, Alphaville, Adele, Rihanna or Stromae. But they never copy the original. They usually change the rhythm, the key, the speed, the instrumentation, they put in solos where there are none in the original, and so on. They wouldn’t call it cover, they would call it loopifying 😅

Welcome to DIRTY LOOPS, you've got to watch the fans favourite WORK SHIT OUT {the studio video's}. Great bass from HENRIK LINDER and drums from AARON MELLERGARD. You've got to watch the funny credits at the end of this video, the boys are all classically trained and managed by the legendary QUINCY JONES. I call their music 'HAPPY FEEL GOOD MUSIC', other great studio video's. ROCK YOU,. WORLD ON FIRE, Then the 8 minute classic. NEXT TO YOU, HIT ME, and a great ballad with great. JONAH NILSSON vocals. BREAKDOWN. 2 great instrumentals back to the session with CORY WONG, the unbelievable TURBO, amazing saxophone playing, The horn section were the backing musicians for the late PRINCE. And an instrumental from the trio with an unusual title. SONGS FOR LOVERS COFFEE BREAK IS OVER. JONAH NILSSON also sings a great version of Michael Jacksons BILLY JEAN in Paris in a show for his mentor QUINCY JONES who was sitting on the side of the stage welcoming the artists to the stage, JONAH is also performing with 2 bass players from back in the Michael Jackson days. RICHARD BONA and MARCUS MILLER. once you've watched one dirty loops video you've got to watch another and another. Best wishes from the rainy north east coast of England.

You also commented on HENRIK LINDER'S bass playing, I forgot about FOLLOW THE LIGHT, another one with CORY WONG and his band, great bass with a foot pedal in this one, at the end of bass solo keep an eye on sax player grace chung Kelly's face loving every second. Same again best wishes for the north east coast of England.

*Thank You!* I *_LOVE_* _"Funky"._ Great, Tight, Funky, Horn Sections improve any song (Rule Britannia? 🤔). Yes! the horn break sounds like James Bond ①. They _are_ "on it". Fun fact: Dirty Loops recorded their video in Sweden. Cory Wong and the horns recorded theirs in Minneapolis (lockdown). They wanted the video to look like they were together ②. Aaron, the drummer, edited the two videos together (Aaron edits all Dirty Loops' videos). Apparently, to help the illusion, when Cory Wong smiles at Dirty Loops he's actually smiling at his girlfriend. 😀 Thanks again, Chaps. Best Wishes. ☮ G-Man-😎 I'm relieved and pleased you enjoyed it. 😀 Jonah has great range, and vocal technique. Backing vocals are usually him. Very good keyboard player. Henrik Linder's bass 'brings the funk' and sometimes plays 'lead'. Cory Wong's got a big catalogue of collaborations, including Vulfpek and Victor Wooten (best living bassist?) Michael B. Nelson on trombone is a legendary musician, composer and arranger. He arranged the Hornheads for Prince. Other songs from the same collaboration : _Dirty Loops & Cory Wong - Follow The Light_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4allKuBnrhoa5I a joint Dirty Loops, Cory Wong, Dave Barnes (?) composition. The funk is strong with Henrik. Watch the top left when he 'goes off' starting 3:00. 😂 _Cory Wong & Dirty Loops // TURBO_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpvEfYKhZsSUiMk No vocals. Funky-As-F WARNING: Listeners should not drive, and may damage neck or shoulder muscles! _Cory Wong & Dirty Loops // Ring of Saturn_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2Kcl2OZjKetmrs No vocals. Chill, samba/fusion? Wikipedia: _Dirty Loops met at Södra Latin upper secondary school. They attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm._ Legend goes they initially made some covers, and released them on KZbin trying to get work. They produce the audio and video themselves, handing it to Quincy Jones when it's done. Dirty Loops credits usually have some silliness, for example "Henrik stunt double - Edward Scissorhands" ① I got the James Bond theme immediately too. It sounded like the music signalling the "big set piece" is about to happen. A couple of other rectors got the "James Bond" theme too, but most don't. Did you notice the weird brass instrument at 9:36? Apparently, it's a "Double bell euphonium". It was new to me. ② To look like one studio, Dirty Loops sent a specification or 'shopping list' to ensure Cory Wong's studio 'look' matched theirs eg. the huge lights, carpet, and how to arrange things so they could be spliced together.

I have to say, this swerved very far out of my preferred lane and musical taste but give credit where credit is due, for sure. I suspect all of these musicians are as practiced as they are talented, each clearly mastering their instrument. I think there was some kinda video tricks going on there, like CGI or AI or one-a-them-damn-things, with the drummer because [what ever that was], they were keeping time like an atomic clock! I bet Neil Peart was his favorite drummer and Geddy and Alex from Rush should probably look him up. Up until the end when the brass and wind went into that solo bit, I thought they were used perfectly. Just for brief accent notes. That’s the way I like to hear them. They could have had a synthesizer do the same thing but the real horns was a nice touch. Again, not MY thing, but they are crazy talented at doing THEIR thing.

I’m not a drummer myself, but have often heard how tight, hard driving and technically clean Aron’s playing is. @psidvicious You wrote _"I think there was some kinda video tricks going on there, ...., with the drummer because [....], they were keeping time like an atomic clock!"_ I wrote in my earlier comment, the video _is_ odd. Dirty Loops recorded their part in Sweden. Cory Wong & the "Hornheadz" recorded in Minneapolis, I assume playing along to Dirty Loops' recording. They took great care to make the two studios look the same. Aaron edits all Dirty Loops videos. He stitched the two videoed performances together to make it look like they were all in one studio. Dirty Loops are always 'tight', Aaron, the drummer, is wearing something 'in ear". They might be ear protection, but he may be listening to a click track. AFAICT, Cory Wong and the 'Hornheadz' are wearing in-ear monitors, so they may be listening to a mix of Dirty Loops and click track. That would guarantee their studio microphones couldn't pick up any of Dirty Loops' parts. A common click-track would make editing easier, without special effects. Best Wishes. ☮

I admit it's a very creative take on it. They didn't try and do it the same which is admirable. However, it's not for me. For my taste covers can have a twist off the original yet should keep the vibe(a tribute of sorts) of the original and this was 180 degrees different. I would be interested to see what else they've done to be fair.

FFC - I've put links for the other 3 Dirty Loops & Cory Wong collaboration in one of my comments. "Follow the Light" is an original song with vocals (and a bass solo), 👍👍 the other two have no vocals. I've put a slew of their own songs in a second comment. They've also covered Justin Bieber, Adele, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears as a trio www.youtube.com/@dirtyloops/videos I often enjoy re-interpretations of classics. They changed a *_LOT,_* yet it's unmistakably the same song. I think I understand your point about preferring covers to be a sort of tribute. I don't mind wildly different, as long as it's very good. Different can't excuse awful, though. If I'd heard this version first, I think MJ's might seem good, but a bit 'flat' by comparison. Best Wishes. ☮ My favourite cover is much more different than Dirty Loops + Cory Wong interpretation of "Thriller": _Jacob Collier - (Lionel Richie's) All Night Long (Official Video)_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKTToox9r5KNZ9U It won a Grammy. Plus his Mum's in it playing violin (she's a concert violinist among other things). How wonderful would it be to make a Grammy winning arrangement of a classic song with your Mum?! 😂 However, I also like 'Bardcore', eg. _Jolene (Bardcore | Medieval Style)_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5jUgp94asujq8U or _House of the Rising Sun - Hildegard von Blingin’ & Algal the Bard (Bardcore | Medieval Style)_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/m57cdpJ9hrN5jZY (you're too young to remember _The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGXFd6SNlMqoaKs ) The Warning's re-interpretation of Metallica Enter Sandman is glorious and very different: _The Warning - ENTER SANDMAN Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX 08/29/2022_ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJicp4F7bMygZqs

@chueysmama2622 I'm trying to be more open to different music, at least a little. 😅 Their overall sound wasn't bad, so to be fair I think I should listen to at least one other song. Hard rock and heavy metal have a special place in the music section of my brain of course! 😜
