Man... I've got a bone to pick with you, Steve. See, here's my problem. I never heard Dirty Loops til your first video on them. Loved it. I was instantly hooked. But now I simply can't just listen to them on my own because I don't want to spoil myself for any of your future videos of theirs. So I'm sitting here in anticipation for the next time you post a reaction to them. It's sooooo hard to pump the brakes and not just dive into their catalog. This was an absolutely superb cover. What more needs to be said? They're amazing. Fantastic video. Now I'm going to patiently wait for your next video so I can get my DL fix 😂
@SteveOGRock2 жыл бұрын
Haha! Well I’m honoured! And I can relate. All I want to do is tear through their catalogue but they’re all so good I want to take the time to record a reaction for them… but I don’t want to make this a DL reaction channel so I’m spacing it out over the weeks. It’s tough but also let’s me really focus in on each track. So much fun these guys.

Nice reaction. The time signature here is 12/8 instead of the traditional 4/4, which is where that "swinginess" comes from. Being Dirty Loops we knew that they were going to do something special with the song, and they killed it of course.

Aron is having too much fun in the instrumental section. He's accenting every 4th 8th note triplet on the bell giving the bar a 4:3 polyrhythm feel. Then later on he switches from triplet feel to straight 16th notes with a fun double stroke pattern between the ride and the snare ghost note. Cheers to another good DL reaction.

@@SteveOGRock @Tim Stevenson That section was 6/8 the ride cymbal bell is accented on the 1,3 and 5 easiest way for me to count that section
@timothydog762 жыл бұрын
@@Antonio-fo4fl I don't believe that part is in 6/8. The entire song is in 12/8 (or 4/4 triplet shuffle feel). The instrumental section switches to a half-time feel as you can hear the snare on the 3 of each bar instead of 2 and 4 like before.

Wonderful reaction as always. Great informed commentary with nice personnel shares as to how the music is affecting you. Love it. FYI: Jonah has a solo song called "Coffee Break" and it's great. Aron and Henrik have a four song side project called "Songs for Lovers"-also great. The only song of those four that Jonah plays on is called "Coffee Break is Over", you can make your own call on what that might mean but it is a killer instrumental with a wonderful little synchopated breakdown that'll bring a smile to your face for sure. Loving these and enjoying them with you.

Awesome reaction, Steve. The shades indicate when Jonah morphs from his Michael Jackson delivery to his Stevie Wonder delivery. Those two-up two-down doubles between kick and tom....the power and symmetry are amazing! I'd love to see you react to one of their oldest covers...Britney Spears 'Circus' from 2012.

How sick would it be if Dirty Loops was this entire ensemble? The Horn Heads are just impeccable man. And even though he isn't soloing all over the place, Cory Wong fits this level of musicianship (or he wouldn't be there). Another great reaction Steve. See you in another video.

The bass sound. I’ve heard interviews with Henrik, he talks about recording the tracks on bass and then sending it out with MIDI where I think Aaron (the drummer) goes to work on the track adding synth bass tones. Not on every track but I think Thriller clearly is one where you get that full round tone.

I think he does most of that himself though. At least he did for the Phoenix EP, according to an interview with him in BassMagazine.

I discovered DL last year and they got me through lockdown and reinvigorated my love and appreciation of music. Brilliant musicianship all round. Teamed with that incredible horn section and Cory….wow! Wonderful to see others appreciate them too. Why aren’t they huge?! Easily one of the most instantly enjoyable bands today. Check out their early stuff too - Hit me, Rock you and a few of the covers they do are easily better than the originals- Circus (Britney) and Rollercoaster (Bieber). Keep them coming….love your work and insights Steve and agree that Follow the light is song of the year!

I think each of Aron’s limbs are in completely different arrangements and area codes and cut off from any WiFI connection but connected to his brain which is a designated geo positioned satellite for this analogy. Either that or he was spliced with an octopus who have limbs that are their own brains essentially. Madness. Just amazing.

@@SteveOGRock you nailed it in this or another of their vids you reacted to when you commented that it seems unfair. Of course it’s talent mixed with waaaaaaaaay more than ten thousand hours or graft as we all know….but for us mere mortals it does seem supernatural. These lads are something else and I can appreciate them all although as a drummer I naturally focus on Aron. The Q Jones production just makes it all the more bad ass. Perfect marriage.

@@SteveOGRock Let's start in the right order: First came Pomplamoose, awesome band consisting of Patreon CEO Jack Conte and his wife Nataly. Since a couple of years back they produce one music video a week together with a rotating gang of awesome musicians and you should totally check them out! One of many recommendations there would be their "Sweet Dreams + White Stripes Mashup" that has so much musical joy that you can't avoid smiling straight through! During a period they did a lot of funk covers, so much so that Jack and guitarist Ryan Lerman created a separate band dedicated to that genre; Scary Pockets. They have the same structure as Pomplamoose with Jack and Ryan being the core while the the rest of the band consists of different awesome musician friends of theirs that take turns participating in different songs. Dirty Loops Thriller cover had me thinking of Scary Pockets, and you could for starters listen to their Enter Sandman funk cover - there's a lot of great material on that channel. After writing this novel of a comment I think my main recommendation actually is Pomplamoose ^^ They have both original and cover songs, high level of musicality and first and foremost an interaction between the musicians caught on camera that just makes my heart so glad!
