For the sake of my own health, I wouldn’t use organophosphate. I have seen how it has ruined the health of operators. I would use Spot On or Crovect to treat the maggots and also apply the Click as well. I have never had dirty bums from wet grass and we get plenty of rain. Just the time of year for strongyle worms. A worm count would be helpful. Young stock more susceptible to worm burdens. They need crutching too. I would definitely shear back the soiled wool as the strike appearance goes further than is obvious. I recall that Click can be applied straight after shearing but it also states that it will not work on dirty wool.

Flies don't like wind. If it's possible, configure paddocks so animals can access wind, or move animals to windy paddocks in wet humid weather patterns.

Hi David, I looked up organophosphates. It's dangerous stuff for humans. Be careful with it. We have meat sheep. One has a bald spot / sore. I am looking for what may be causing it. May take her to the vet. Thanks for the video. Stay safe! Ron from Texas. :)
@sheepschool365

Hi Ron. We get microscopic mites on sheep especially in winter. We call it Scab which is very similar to mange in dogs. The sheep keep scratching on fences and hedges and end up with bare patches. Plunge dipping in organophosphates is the weapon of choice for treatment but very dangerous work!

A friend and I have five pet sheep, all ex breeding ewes. Just under a week ago, we discovered that one of our two polled White Dorsets had fly strike. Seems a bit early for fly strike, but could be due to the wet start of the year, then a warm spell. Last September, it was the other polled White Dorset. The three Hebridean crosses seem unaffected, thankfully. Perhaps the Dorsets are more prone to it?🤔 They do tend to get hotter and more sweaty, due to the type of wool.🐑

Treated 6 lambs on tuesday exactly 10 weeks since using zermasect which lasts 10 to 12 weeks ,all ewes and lambs dipped on wedensday ,click is best but does not treat ticks which we have ,used to use ectofly but only lasts 6 weeks not long enough

I use Dysect on the sheep & on the lambs if done early enough (59 day withdrawal). Otherwise any of the shorter withdrawal sprays on the lambs. I clip all the affected wool area off, then if bad use blue spray. Use then dysect to treat the area affected .
@sheepschool365
@sheepschool365 Жыл бұрын
How long does the Dysect protect them for? I know some farmers fully shear anything that is struck which is probably a good way to get them thriving again.

I would be cautious of underdosing. Wormer resistance is a big issue and the next thing, in my opinion, will be fly treatments, as we are seeing with the dips. Click binds to the fleece and spreads in the wool grease so by underdosing there will be less chemical cover all over so flies/maggots more likely to survive and grow and then we have click resistant maggots rather than shorter cover period, would be interested to hear what the manufacturer has to say that’s just my thoughts!
@vghargreaves

I believe Clikzin, the 8 week protection version has 12.5mg/ml. Clik extra has 65mg/ml of the active ingredient, dicyclanil. I'm probably looking at it all wrong but my understanding is more active ingredient = longer protection and it naturally reduces out of the fleece over time.
@noddy8285
@noddy8285 Жыл бұрын
I use ectofly on all lambs, it only covers them for 8 weeks but are usually gone by then. It has a 7 day withdrawal so handy for lambs close to weight. It can also be used as a treatment for ewes.
@sheepschool365
@sheepschool365 Жыл бұрын
Think the Clikzin is same, 8 week protection and 7 day withdrawal. How much does the Ectofly work out at per animal?
@noddy8285
@noddy8285 Жыл бұрын
Ya similar but only prevention not treatment ( I think). It works out around 84cent per lamb for ectofly and 1.93 for clik extra. I know clik gives 19 weeks protection which would work for ewe lambs but I do them again in August and shear them in October. I know every system is different but it seems to work for me.
