not really dirty judgement but badminton is the fatest sport ever so it is pretty common that the judge unable to see clearly as they couldnt match the pro players speed but badminton should change their system into something like VAR in football for more accurate judgement

Another bad call was (I forgot which tournament, but it was one of the later ones of 2022) when the umpire thought that the birdie hit the ground before Chou Tien Chen returned it, but it clearly did not in the replay.

Well Hawkeye is not perfect that is definitely, after all Hawkeye is not the actual point of the shuttle drop,but is based on camera captured the projectile of the shuttle then using the computer to calculate the dropping point. (But this sometimes will have deviation,afterall there are many random variable that affect badminton shuttlecock projectile like wind in the court ,the feather condition( might being damage after the smash ) all this are random variable that keep changing during the rally it is kinda difficult to add in these variable data during the calculation. Hence there is the deviation. But the good part of Hawkeye can solve the problems between" potential bias line judge & player unstatisfy with the line judge decision" & sometimes line judge overlooked (dint see the shuttle ). Unlike human " line judge " Hawkeye is computer calculation result, so won't have those " emotion affected on decision" human can be bias.

The hawk eye should be realistic as the hawk eye in tennis. They show the running rally so that we know the exact shot that is being reviewed. Here in badminton, you have animation that is played which can be per-recorded as well...!!! BWF has to look into this review system.

@@kingghidorah5271 There aren't enough frames per second in the camera footage, so it can fail in many instances where the hawkeye would not fail. This has been proven already by comparisons used to determine the most accurate method for reviewing points. The problem with the hawkeye is that it needs to be properly calibrated first, in which case it's very very reliable. Maybe in the future they will improve the calibration process and make it automatic.

In badminton, hawkeye is human-operated. They just have a zoomed in look at the bounce, and then they place the shuttle on the graphic to represent where it landed. I sat behind the hawkeye operators at the All England a few years ago, hence I know this.

Thank you for the video. The LS match between India/Indonesia where from side view, the shuttle, looks out is in fact in. What the graphic display did was wrongly placed it further into the line causing confusion. The cock of the shuttle is regarded as a circular object when view from the top. In that incident, the display should have shown to marginally touch the line. There was a different match, MS, I can't remember which event and was a sideline shot, the graphic correctly display it marginally touch the line.

Imo it's because they are assholes and a wrong call may affect the referee's record and reputation so they might as well not admit it. They think referee's error is "part of the game" and players need to accept anything the umpire says and move on.

Hawkeye isn't really tracking the shuttle itself. Its using a set of highspeed cameras to predict its flight and where it will land. In tennis, much more predictable because the ball is round and not as wind resistant. Badminton, the shuttle tumbles, slows and flies erratically-much more difficult to predict.

You could simply make pressure sensitive tape, where it records foot prints and impacts of any kind on it, thats all you need... could be electrical.. the rule though is a bit vague is it really the point of first impact, or deformation of impact or the feathered back... if its hte initial point of contact most mid lines are out.... Laser system., a sub floor system. pressure system. It cna be made really rugged and no onw would not.. jsut how yo uwant to make those contacts..

Honestly a lot of these judgements were hard to see. Yes, we can always spot these errors from playback with slowmo, but during the tournament it's difficult for human eyes to spot exactly from the angles we see from where the camera shot. I think having playback during the tournament is a MUST to reduce any unfair judgement. Having said that, the Koreans have not only once played very dirty and un-sportsmanship-like based on so many tournaments I watched online. It's disgusting to see when the shuttle clearly hit the player and she most probably knew it too but pretended she'd won the point. Some other players delaying the game as well trying to play tricks but never get warning.

come on. the players had absolutely and should not have power in overturning judgment, which is afterall not their job. its the umpire, linesman and service judge role. if the umpire awarded the player a point even if they knew it, might as well take it. what u fail to understand is injustice is common in sport. one day u gain unfair advantage, the next day, u urself will be treated unfairly. so, might as well take a free point. if anything, blame the umpire.

I don't want to be too unfair to the judges here, some of the wrong calls are very hard to get right, here we can clearly see it because it is slowed down. Did you know that hawkeye is badminton is just a camera shot/video of the action, which is zoomed in by a couple of BWF staff, and they have to decide on the call, then they place the 'spot' on the graphic to fit with the call. It's not like tennis hawkeye, which I believe is electronically triangulated somehow.

that's horseshit if that's really how it works. in tennis it's based on several high resolution, very high fps cameras that track the ball movement and coordinate with each other to accurately place the ball in 3d space every like, 10 milliseconds. if properly calibrated it's accurate to like 3 millimeters.

Umpires shouldn’t hold too much power in courts. Hawkeye should be compare with the videos if challenged by players. Every courts deserves to have Hawkeye and camera for the lines. The management should have better solutions. There are times when umpires are bribed. Too many unfairness that should be revised by BWF!

I’m an amateur player and i can tell when i commit faults, i bet the professional players should be able to. I am an amateur in badminton and a judge in another sport. An athlete can honestly be mistaken in what he saw. That is why judges are needed, and not because all athletes are pathological liars. It's a double-edged sword. An athlete's mistake may also be in favor of an opponent. He sees that the shuttlecock is in favor of the opponent, but even in this case his vision can deceive him. And then he admits a "mistake" that did not happen. That wouldn't be fair either. Let the judges judge and come what may.

mostly wrong calls here under human error initally, having read many comments & suggestions that badminton matches required for VAR which similar to what Tennis matches equipped for tours, but I guess such change in this sports would have to take a long time, with the others saying players should be allowed to have the rights to challenge the empire & line judge decision if they strongly contest their calls, which in my opinion is doable and reasonable and more appliable than facilitating with VARs

I wonder whether these umpires or refs ever played badminton in their life. When the players are calling for re-judgement then why don't the umpire go for checking through third umpire or slow motion? Seems to be deliberate action to discourage the players. Body touch, shirt touch, racquet double touch, net touch all these could be atleast reviewed. World will not end that fast. Fair play and fair judgement should be the spirit of entire game. But umpires are the biggest obstacles and villain of the game.

My suspicions about the plays are they are totally different shots and not the actual play they are reviewing. For instance 2:50 is not even close to the trajectory of the shuttlecock/birdie. It shows going from right to left versus the real video going from left to right.

Introduce VAR reply and there has to be consequences or punishes to umpires who proved to have made wrong calls with replay, like suspension or some sort. I don’t care how people say how hard the job is, a wrong call is a wrong call and the wrong call should be overruled by the replay. Too many arrogant umpires who are useless and won’t admit their mistake even if replay shows it otherwise.

Absolutely abhorrent take. Currently BWF mandates that hawkeye takes presidency over all line calls, and no replay can overrule that. The fact that you have the brass neck to suggest that umpires who have to follow the rules and make split second decision about net faults should be punished for something thats so hard to judge such as net kills and even call them “arrogant” astonishes me.
