As a driver your constantly thinking of your next move in split seconds. When you see whos ahead of you you decide immediately how, when and where your going to pass them. You definitely take into account how that drivers raced you in the past and in-turn execute what you have planned. Dale was right, Denny passed plenty of other cars in that corner and nobody wrecked in that turn. Once Hamlin saw Chastain it was a surgical strike. Denny's a vet. He knows how to maneuver that car to create that incident without taking himself out. Denny's done it to countless other drivers over the years and knew how his car was handling and if he could pull it off. 100% intentional, 100% retaliation. Period.
@toddtaylor65062 жыл бұрын
The only "proof" Junior needs is that he, himself, has thought about doing such things. I don't think you need absolute proof some driver has decided to wreck someone for doing something weeks earlier than simply knowing how human beings work in general. People hold grudges. Human nature.

Fun listening to this discussion. Gonna have to agree with Dale though. I was surprised to find out the wreck that people didn't think that was retaliation. If any other driver was lined up next to Hamlin there's no way that situation would have had happened. I would agree that Hamlin gave Chastain the chance to lift and it wasn't the most malicious form of retaliation but Hamlin drove Chastain up the track not caring whether Chastain hit the wall or not.
@sethbomgardner90302 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, plus at Pocono, 17 laps is a LONG way to go. Maybe you pull that move on the last lap or two, but there's no way you risk a long feud, possibly wrecking yourself, and possible retaliation with that many laps to go. You spend the next 12 laps or so trying to pass him clean, if that doesn't work, at the end of the race you get a little physical.

I listened to this yesterday on the podcast and I couldn't wait to see with my own eyes Mike's reaction to Jr cussing. First and foremost Mike you are 100% wrong. What Denny did is an extraordinary common move. I've been going to race tracks for the last 40+ years and have personally seen this move. Hell I had a buddy of mine who would run the outside guy up the track on restarts and thought it was funny as hell. The inside guy running the outside guy out of real estate happens all the time in either retaliation or just to teach a guy a lesson or just for fun. I'm willing to bet that that move was repeated at least 50 times this past weekend alone at the 100s of short tracks across the country. Mike sad to say but you're talking out you butt. (I'm not gonna cuss at you like Jr did) What Danny did was 100% intentional and yes he was thinking about retaliation with 20 laps to go.
@zacharyradford55522 жыл бұрын
Denny would have done that to any drivers.
@thomasredden42632 жыл бұрын
Ok but that doesn’t make mike wrong that makes his point. He’s saying this wasn’t retaliation it was two guys racing for a win and not giving an inch, and if it were any other drivers it would be seen as such, but bc it’s these two who have had the run ins they have this year it seems much more weighted of a move than it actually likely was. If Ross lifts he will have other opportunities to get by, but he takes the riskiest move he can and just send it around the outside knowing full well who is inside of him. Denny didn’t turn into him, he ran for as good of an exit as possible and Ross chose to stay in it and get way higher than he should have been and left him self no exit without lifting, which he was unwilling to do. That isn’t Denny fencing the dude. That’s Ross being unwilling to see the forest through the trees. I’m not saying junior is wrong bc it’s 100% not something anyone could know except Denny, but for all the work Denny put on him last time he was running ross hard, he seems to be fully willing to blatantly prove a point, so why now do something that ambiguous as your way of proving a point when this dude needs to be unabashedly fenced for the way he has driven?

or as Kyle Petty said, "Denny gave Chastain just enough room to wreck himself". Kyle Busch knew it was coming and the video shows him roll out of the throttle so he had room to avoid what was about to happen.

@@94nolo just joking bud. As mike stated. If it involved any two other drivers, it would be seen as just hard racing, doing what you have to, to protect your position, and take advantage of the run Denny had coming out of the middle of the turn. Yes, Denny knew what would most likely happen. He also knew Ross is aggressive, would most like not let out of the gas, thus putting himself into the wall.

Love the discussion between Mike and Dale Jr. I think Denny's answer(What did you expect me to do!?!) Answers the question for both debates. Everyone fully expected Denny to retaliate vs Ross, we fully expect him to not cut Ross any slack, and we fully expect Denny to do what it takes to try and win the race. So as far as that answer, it stands to reason so that Mike and Dale are both correct. The question being, Was what happened between the 11 and 1 retaliation for past events? Yes Yes Yes. Dale Jr is correct and Mike is wrong. LOL. But I do love how hard MD argued his point of view. And it was hilarious that Jr got PO'd. Great show as usual.

Mike has lost his damn mind. You can’t “wreck” someone BEHIND YOU by making a block on that guy who’s attempting a pass with a head of steam (the Chase vs. Lajoie incident). You’re not responsible for how the guy behind you drives their car. In the side by side Denny vs. Ross incident, Hamlin intentially drifted up to deny Chastain the room to make a pass on the outside, up by the wall… So yes, I’d say Denny “wrecked” Chastain. Junior’s 100% correct. Mike’s nutz…
