Musically, I don’t know what to tell you if you’re not already hearing it. But in terms of structure and melody the Dirty Projectors have been pushing their sound in new directions for a while now, and I think this last batch of songs is a good demonstration of that continuation. Visually, I think “Little Bubble” and “Keep Your Name” may be better representations of a lot of (what I consider to be) “boundary pushing” techniques, but this video certainly highlights their extremely effective use of simple visual motifs and repetition. Sure, it’s not something that hasn’t been done before (but ya know, it’s *all* been done before). That being said, the cuts are just… so good. I mean, it’s two people climbing in and out of a car, walking forwards and backwards. Yet it never seems to lose direction or get lost in mindless redundancy. I suppose that these days, the most progressive move an artist can make when reaching out to a visually over-stimulated public is to be fearlessly simple. And that’s exactly what the Dirty Projectors are doing here. Appreciate your follow up question, I would love to hear your thoughts as to why you agree or disagree.
@r.pneumo73378 жыл бұрын
OK, I'll start with saying - this kind of music doesn't connect with me. At all. But I guess if it was really unique or totally new, I'd be at least a bit impressed, and I'm not. It just sounds too bland and generic, reminds me of How To Dress Well. I'm not saying it's bad, but if I heard it on the radio or in a shop, my mind wouldn't even register it. But then again, I'm the sort of person who can't understand why James Blake's music - which is kinda similar, too - is so liked and admired. As for the video, to me it's pretty much just like the song. Your comment about simplicity is very interesting; I guess I'd agree, but I think that simple ideas need to be also very strong, striking, original. The "Little Bubble" video was much better, but while watching it, I couldn't help thinking about Bjork's "Joga" (did you notice the similarities?). Btw, I'd say that Bjork is an artist who's "constantly pushing boundaries visually and musically". She's a great reference point when talking about truly groundbreaking songs/videos.

sounds so good but there r people in the mainstream rocking a similar sound. this isn't boundary pushing, but within what it is/ for what it is its really good.
@LfunkeyA8 жыл бұрын
not really, guess you're not into nuance
@rock1stfan8 жыл бұрын
LfunkeyA what does this even mean? i appreciate the subtleties of the song but seriously, this is not boundary pushing. its a great single, but its not unlike a lot of shit out there. your statement was seriously pretentious and if wasn't meant to be, it came across that way anyways.
@LfunkeyA8 жыл бұрын
no, my statement is not pretentious. i'm not pretending, i am honest and passionate about this. yours however is void, give me those examples and lets analyze them together. nothing in the track here is like a lot of the shit out there. the percussion is rich, colorful, polyrhythmic, ranging from very organic to strident synthetic. the low-end has a very intentional absence of a recognizable bass-line to lead the track, in fact there is no bass-line or sustaining sub, making the mood less grounded and more ambiguous, to me anyway. the vocals are clear, lightly modified only in certain areas, and very dynamic, unlike the static 100% filter vomit that is auto-tune along with associated over-compression, clipping or unintended distortion, all absent here. both of the vocals are unique, the lead especially so, with his signature use of vibrato and complex, flamboyant melody runs. please show me all the other tracks that sound like this, because Dirty Projectors even at their poppiest sound like nothing but Dirty Projectors - folklore and world-music influence, vivid vocals, jarring transitions and peculiar instrumentation and use of effects, interesting lyrics. you are not looking at the nuances. you probably see a major key composition with somewhat poppy vocals. yes, but by that standard 50% of music from the past 100 years is all the same. which of course, it isn't.
@rock1stfan8 жыл бұрын
LfunkeyA i am not denying this is a good track but you are not looking well enough if you think dirty projectors is a good musical project as hard to find as a needle in a haystack of shit- they do stand out in the indie scene but so many other artists have been pulling off the electro-acoustic, ethereal sound that david longstreth is pulling off in this and his other three new singles; bon iver came through with an absolute masterpiece last year with 22, a million which for justin versons own boundaries of wintery folk, he absolutely broke through and went above and beyond with the sound fuckery but made it sound so natural- these latest DP singles kinda remind me of that sound. i'm also hearing a lot of frank ocean (blonde) in these singles, the soulful performances and beautiful melodies leaking through. this new DP track in particular gives off iglooghost vibes- if you have not heard of him, he is an electronic music producer on brainfeeder. he is making glitchy and sporadic but intricate music thats hard to pin down but youll get the feel for it when you listen to it. sampha just a few days ago came thru with an AMAZING project titled process which i wholly recommend, sonically even more intricate and nuanced than anything if heard in these latest singles. dirty projectors is a prestigious project swimming in a sea of other equally notable artists, and therefore i feel comfortable arguing this is not boundary pushing, but it is wholly good and worth noting.
@LfunkeyA8 жыл бұрын
i absolutely could not care for bon iver or frank ocean. they sounded dull, and the production was bland on both of those records. furthermore, bon iver's use of effects was far more generic and unpleasant to my ears. Wow opinions. I'm okay with Sampha, and i like iglooghost but that's nothing like the projectors. nothing sounds like their vocals to me. No boundaries were pushed with either 22 a mil or Blonde. I don't mind disagreeing with you all day, we're people, but stop rubbing in the 'boundary' part. one person's boundary, is another person's joy. you can say Swans push boundaries, so what, i fucking hate their noise. the sex pistols pushed boundaries, i hate all of punk and it's stupidity and anarchic inclinations all day. take a breath and enjoy your artists, but i don't think it's fair to say that Dirty Projectors sound like a million bands out there. they have a very particular sound, maybe try some of their records, or better yet don't listen to them if you find them generic and enjoy your favorite stuff. later.
