GRIP in Germany conducted a comparative test of pedestrian emergency braking systems for Mercedes, Tesla, and BYD vehicles. Here's a summary of the results in English: 1. Test Scenarios: - Static pedestrian on the road - Pedestrian crossing suddenly from behind an obstacle - Rainy conditions with reduced visibility 2. Results: - Tesla Model 3 (USA): 7.5 out of 9 points - BYD Seal (China): 5.5 out of 9 points - Mercedes EQB (Germany): 3.5 out of 9 points 3. Performance breakdown: - Static pedestrian test: All three vehicles performed well, scoring full points. - Crossing pedestrian test: * Tesla performed best, with consistent braking * BYD had mixed results, sometimes braking effectively * Mercedes struggled, often failing to brake in time - Rainy conditions test: * Tesla performed surprisingly well, even with camera-only system * BYD failed to detect the pedestrian in all attempts * Mercedes also failed to detect or brake for the pedestrian 4. Key takeaways: - Tesla's camera-based system outperformed the competition, even in challenging conditions. - BYD showed promise but struggled in adverse weather. - Mercedes unexpectedly performed poorly, especially in the more challenging scenarios. The test highlighted the importance of these systems in potentially saving lives, as approximately one pedestrian dies daily in traffic accidents in Germany. However, it also emphasized that drivers should remain vigilant, as these systems are not always reliable. Citations: [1] kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3Wzfmlpqapnhrc

How do you think that will affect the price of FSD? If Tesla is liable might FSD become significantly more expensive? Tesla would have to insure against accidents. Would owners then not be required to have auto insurance?

@@barkleykern3856 All good questions and I’m assuming Tesla has an army of legal minds working on how to protect the company once “unsupervised” version is launched. @@livinginmatrix Thanks for the response. I bet you're right about the legal team working on this one. A truly unsupervised FSD makes your car a chauffeur service, which adds a significant amount of value. @@barkleykern3856 I think while using the car as part of the robotaxi fleet, Tesla will definitely have to insure and cover damages. While you are driving on your own you're responsible for insurance, while you are driving your own car using FSD ??? Maybe you pay for insurance but it's an FSD rate. I've always said that adoption of FSD will be driven by insurance prices. Tesla is going to insure cars using FSD and it's going to keep getting cheaper as FSD gets better. I can see in the future insurance being $50 a month or less if you have FSD and use it all the time. Meanwhile I'm paying $360 a month for one car.

I agree with you. The system is VERY impressive. I used it today to drive me an hour and 45 minutes home from Philadelphia to Reading, PA. No needs to take over, it changed lanes at all the right times, if someone was approaching from behind it moved out of the way to allow people to pass. In the city of Philadelphia it navigated the roads flawlessly. But as great as the system is, I also believe that we are a long way from Robotaxi and unsupervised driving. Especially when the car can’t see the roads due to weather or sun glare. What I do want to know, how do you get the car to drive without having to keep your hand on the steering wheel? I am always getting the blue flashing warning even when I am holding the wheel. As for NHSD doing an investigation on Tesla FSD, I think there is more to the story that isn’t being told. Even in your video, it handles things well that a “Human” driver would have missed due to blind spots and things of that nature. I have a hard time believing that the car hit someone in FSD. And if the car was in FSD, Tesla should be able to confirm that. I believe people are using FSD for their own failures to be responsible drivers. Videos like this, prove that. Nice job on your video. Thank you!

@@catbert7 _You should have your hands on the wheel regardless, because reaction time is critical._ Actually, NHTSA recommends *not* keeping your hands on the wheel. I think, in my area, that it’s pretty much solved. With the addition of reverse and park, it will pretty much be robotaxi ready around here. V13 might be it. By the way, Waymo is operating here and they are not perfect. They just count disengagements (which are hidden by the absence of a driver) much more leniently.

Not to mention still can't reverse, pull over for emergency vehicles, recognize hand signals, etc. We are abandoned... "[This] may entail automatically bringing the vehicle to a stop within its current travel path, or it may entail a more extensive maneuver designed to remove the vehicle from an active lane of traffic and/or to automatically return the vehicle to a dispatching facility (SAE J306-202104, Para. 3.16, Note 3).

Got in the car this evening and found the notification that FSD could be enabled, so I did. Checked if I was charged for it, but I wasn't. It was the same version of the free trial that ended a few months ago. Now FSD 12.5.4.1 is downloading. Not sure why I am getting another trial, but apparently I am. I have a 2023 Model X. Have you heard anything about another free trial?

I expect a preliminary version of Robotaxi cautiously running version 13 in two states next year, with remote human monitoring. I agree it's doubtful us normal folk will be able to sleep while traveling for several more years. I had a couple of concerning interventions with version 12.5.4.1 yesterday. It turned right on red too late in front of oncoming traffic then froze after pulling out half a car length into the lane exposing my driver's door to an approaching Buick. It's turned left into the divided entrance of our subdivision numerous times, but yesterday it decided to turn in on the left side of the medium. I love FSD , always use it, but it hasn't slowed down for a flashing light school zone yet. I'm patient, didn't expect perfection, and these problems are annoying yet easy to avoid.

I just don't think FSD that is camera only is going to get approval for unsupervised self driving. Not only are there basic things is still doesn't do (school zones... Pull over for emergency vehicles etc) but it cannot safely drive in the rain, snow, icy conditions. Granted I'm on H3 with my Y and I'm running 12.5.4 right now, but I still have at least one if not more disengagements every drive. Just earlier it took the wrong exit off the freeway (like it took an exit more than a mile before it's actual exit, then got confused and tried to drive straight in the left hand turn lane. I had to take over to avoid a head on collision. This was at night and FSD seems to always struggle at night for me. These are not things that give me confidence to just let the car do it's thing, especially at night or in any kind of weather, the cameras just don't see that well. I don't know if H3 is the issue or if the software is the issue but I feel fine using FSD on road tips and when I'm eating in the car, otherwise... I just don't trust it enough yet

Unsupervised is literally that. L4 is unsupervised in a HD mapped and geofenced area ( Weymo) . If you have to be there or listen for an alarm that is supervising!
@BigBen62129 күн бұрын
Waymo *is* in a precision-mapped and geofenced area, but that's not a requirement of SAE Level 4. Clearly FSD (Unsupervised), AKA SAE Level 4, will not be precision mapped; but at least initially, it *will* be geofenced to California and Texas.

I'm still on 12.5.4 and I get the major delay at the first 4-way stop a block into the neighborhood. And then it zoom accelerates to 32 mph in a 25 mph zone where you would never want to do more than 25 due to narrowness, restricted sight around a tight curve, parked vehicles, kids playing, etc. I usually get my releases a short time after you get yours so hopefully 12.5.6 shows improvement in my area. 12.5.4 does show improvement in maintaining speed, but, in general, adherence to speed limits is so erratic around here that I am not sure if FSD will ever be able to deal with it. Once FSD is solved you can just share fun stories about your kids?

@BigBen62128 күн бұрын
@@JAnderson127 Earlier versions required you to interact with the steering wheel periodically, by putting increasingly strident messages on the screen; this was call the "nag". The latest version is completely hands-free, as long as you have the interior camera, which all models have had for several years, and the camera can see you eyes to make sure you're keeping you attention on the road ahead.

i tend to agree with all your points, i think yes, at the current pace and limitations HW3 will definitely not be unsupervised. although FSD does some stuff now that i would have thought completely impossible ( the physiology of negotiating with pedestrians and drivers during unorthodox situations ) i think my hangup is; is it possible with the cameras and inference. if you zoom out and say.. put a human in a driving sim with all the 720p camera feeds. I think definitely its fully possible to have 1000x safer than a human robotaxi on hw3 assuming unlimited compute. the cameras at night are way better than my eyes somehow when i manually pull up the cameras. Now the questions is can they do it with this compute. and I think to myself, in 20 years when this is solve and the neural architecture is mature, can they adapt it to make their achievements and progress work on older hardware.. maybe? could be possible assuming huge advancements in AI architecture like there was with transformer networks. So .. a long way to say. i think it could be possible

Any news about School zones? I live near 3 and in the middle of one where when you pull out to the main road you are in the middle of a school zone (with no sign so would have to know from maps or experience). They are photo enforced so not "optional".
@videorebornАй бұрын
I drop off my kid to school daily. The traffic is so bad that you really don’t need a school sign to tell the car to slow down. Often I have to disengage to choose the faster lane to cut through other cars. 😅. And the FSD has set to Assertive in my 12.5.4.1. Can’t wait for this new update see if it’s improves in lane selection.

@@DirtyTesla I disagree that you should count "I should have disengaged" as if you actually had. If you didn't disengage and FSD figured it out one way or another, then you didn't need to disengage in the first place.
@dialy129 күн бұрын
@@BigBen621According to the nomenclature, it’s not a critical disengagement but anything that stops a less than perfectly legal move can be considered a disengagement. Personally, I focus on critical disengagements when it comes to evaluating how close we are to unsupervised FSD.
@BigBen62128 күн бұрын
@@dialy1 _anything that stops a less than perfectly legal move can be considered a disengagement_ There's no official "nomenclature", only a definition on an unofficial web site. And its definition is: "Turning Steering Wheel: Turning required due to crossing lane unexpectedly, accident avoidance, or other required maneuver to avoid unsafe driving. Braking: Braking required due to late deceleration, accident avoidance, or moving forward incorrectly / unsafely." In other words, if you don't actually disengage FSD, it's not a disengagement-even though perhaps there should have been an actual disengagement.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that talks to the car like it can hear me talking. I think FSD unsupervised is safer than a lot of drivers. I use FSD 80% of the time. I have not had any emergency situation so I don't know what FSD would do. Will it drive off the road to avoid an accident? Can it see the side of the road drops off? I want to see FSD actions in emergency situations.
