There are SO many elephants wounded and killed in India from landmines and snares!! It's heartbreaking. The thing that saves them from poachers is that only male Asian elephants have tusks and most of them are kept and abused in captivity for ceremonies, and that's cruel enough!!

Shame on these awful Sri Lankan people for holding these beautiful elephants captive and controlled...chaining a few of the elephants, riding them and using sharp poke sticks...they all look underweight and fearful of the humans with poke sticks. The disabled one with the missing foot is heartbreaking to witness his struggle. So sad and an awful example of humans being their worst to God's majestic creatures. Shameful...I know 2 people who visited this so called "orphanage" and they said it is a wretched place and an awful life for these animals....they should be allowed to live free.
@CalculusProfessor5 жыл бұрын
Hi bdv3360, this is a Elephant orphanage. Sri Lankans don't torture animals. In year 1880, there were 100,000 Elephants in Sri Lanka, now only 3,000. Sri Lanka, then Ceylon was a British colony. Sri Lankan Elephants were killed by British as a sport. One Britisher killed over 1000 Elephants. Torturing animals is a very European thing. 70% of Sri Lankans are Buddhists, they will never kill animals or torture them, it is in their DNA.

Deborah Tawadros, both of you dont know what is happening here. This is an orphanage for injured and abandoned elephants. The new ones are put in chains until they learn the regular routine. If not for this place all those elephants would have died in the wild, which is a hefty loss considering the low numbers of the Sri Lankan elephants.

There is a point where putting them down is the more humane thing to do. This elephant must have lost it's limb quite early in life. It put such strain on it's remaining front leg that it grew crooked. The relieving posture it uses to walk sends shivers down my spine. Making this animal walk up and down this dangerous slope is cruel. Now imagine 40+ years of this torture.

To all the people giving uninformed negative comments: These elephants are from the elephant orphanage. These are orphaned, sick, hurt or over domesticated elephants, who are unable to be rehabilitated into the wild. They spend their lives here, fed, treated and cared for. The elephants here get taken to the nearby river every day to bathe. Elephants shouldn’t just be washed with a hose, it makes them happy to go into the water. The elephant orphanage doesn’t have direct access to the river, so they’re walked through public roads (which gets closed to traffic at this time every day, just for them) to the river. These are not pets, these gentle giants are also several tonnes of pure power, which can crush a person without much effort. Some of these are very dangerous, so they are chained, so that they can’t run amok and cause great death and destruction. Keep in mind that they are still taken to the river, with their 100 or so strong herd by only a handful of people. If one elephant runs amok, the whole herd can stampede, and many men, women and children might be killed within minutes. The people who are being labeled in the comments as their ‘abusers’ and those ‘working them’ like ‘livestock’ are infact their overworked and underfunded caretakers. The mahout sticks they carry, their only defense, can be hurtful to the elephants ears, can’t cause much damage. They are not hit by the stick, and in any case, the elephant skin is tough and several inches thick, so even if they get hit by a stick, they’ll barely feel it.

Many ignorant comments. A few wise ones. This an orphanage for neglected , abandoned , and infirm elephants. This is in Srilanka. Govt supported. A vast open forest forest for grazing. Twice a day they make a sojourn to the river for drinks, bath and cooling down. Because it is routine , elephants don't seem to be excited about the water. Only those wandering elephants that sight the water body after a long time show excitement , play , splashing water and mud. These elephants are well cared for , regularly washed and scrubbed. And they are not skinny. Some elephants have chains , yes , but not hobbled. May be for good reason. And they carry sticks , bull hooks , standard minimum equipment incase of need. Elephants are social animals. Segregating that handicapped elephant is cruel. He must be happy with the company. If possible make a visit or send a contribution instead of lip service.

All those elephants are actually for a sanctuary... those people actually look after those elephants that are orphans.., they can not free them because they will go in contact with the civilians and it would be worse. Every day they took the elephants to the river for shower as you can see the elephants are not aggressive because those guys treated them well. Actually they protect the elephants from clandestine organisations that uses them for riding tourists and other type of abuses.

There are a handful of male elephants with chains. Those chained elephants pass a kind of sexual period. They are aggressive during this period. Usually, elephants do not breed in captivity. But, in this orphanage elephants have babies. It shows that the elephants have new habitats due to the care and treatments they get. Some do not know how much the government spends on managing and maintaining these facilities. As Sri Lankans, we know the truth, But a few with some conflict of interest have spread baseless allegations and accusations against this humane project. Elephants in Sri Lankan culture are sacred animals. In Sri Lanka, capturing elephants is strictly prohibited and the such offense is among some offenses that the culprits will not get bail until the court case is finished. A few domesticated elephants are in Sri Lanka. Almost all of these elephants are now not used for any other work but only for cultural events such as taking the casket of the tooth relics of temples. They were captured 30/40 years ago before these laws were enacted. In the past, when I am around 10 years old (now I am 46 years old), I have seen elephants used for some works. But now elephants are not required for such works because there are enough heavy-duty types of machinery. I hope you get some information about the truth.

I don't think you have any idea of what's going on here. Please research before criticizing from the comfort of your home.

To my knowledge, all of these elephants were rescued from wild when they were injured or misplaced from their natural habitat. These giants were taken to this orphanage when they were very small. The rate of dying of elephants in natural habitat increasing very rapidly. That is the main reason for establishing these orphanage. At least they have someone to take care of them. After them cured, these animals are relocate in natural habitat. Don't be a keyboard worrier, and don't talk non sense if you don't know the real story. Are you come here to look after them if this is stop, ma fucker?

I think you should love to watch if you know whats going on. This is called an elephant orphanage. Most of these elephants are brought here as newborns if they have lost their mothers or had some problems regarding health. They try to send them back to the wild in early adulthood but some do not integrate well and they are allowed to stay there.

British hunted our elephants to near extinction. It is because of this orphanage that the elephant population was brought back in the wild.

They might look so to u, but its not the case for for us who have been there. There is absolutely no reason for an elephant to go hungry since they eat pretty much anything. Most of these are brought here as new borns who've lost there mothers. Even when they grow up, most wont integrate properly with the wild and are allowed to stay, although many do make it back.

Oh for heaven’s sake, these are not abused, these are hurt, orphaned, over domesticated, sick elephants in the elephant orphanage. They are well fed and given treatment. The orphanage doesn’t have direct access to a river, they close the streets everyday and bring the elephants to the river to bathe. The people you’re labeling as abusers are their overworked and underfunded caretakers.

The men walking the elephants are carrying elephant hooks. DON’T BE FOOLED INTERNET. These aren’t good men.
I thought I read somewhere where they had made a prosthetic foot for an elephant like this. It would probably never work in the wild but for a captive elephant that could be cared for. Hell anything that could be secured in place and could help distribute the weight. You can see how it has already started to deform the good leg.

@nuren I can't come to such a country where people are so cruel and primitive with animals. I can't visit such a country and spend a penny knowing that that money contributes to the torment of an animal ..and to come back for a stinking beast with a human. In your country, 90% of the people are very cruel, stinky, soulless, miserable ..., animals that are exploited and tortured to the maximum by humans. And these poor elephants are very tormented .. I have friends who have visited this country , these elephants from this so-called "sanctuary" ... friends who saw how these elephants are treated, how they are imposed with those iron hooks .. how they are exploited ... there are so many clips ... anyway my friends don't they will never visit this country again, the countries where animals are tormented and exploited these so-called sanctuaries where elephants are tortured, tortured, exposed for entertainment, for various rituals and religious holidays, to hard work ... In places where animals are not really exposed and tortured ..there are no chains, people do not have those metal hooks. I would like people in your countries to become human, to become civilized, empathetic ... and to care about poor animals ... because they are wonderful creatures! I don't understand why you are so evil and cruel! But that's how most people in this world are ... I hope for a better world where animals and people live together and people love them, to appreciate them as they deserve, to live together in a better and more beautiful world, without poverty, without cruelty!
