You are a star, this just worked for me too. Some flux on the connector and heated with the soldering iron. Works again now. Never again will I buy a cheap HDD again!

@@fathizaky141200 Yeah, it is a liquid that prevents the metal from oxidizing rapidly. It slows down the process so that there is a good connection. I've done LED lights before and when I first did them, I didn't use flux and even though the Solder/SolderingMetal had contact between the LED and the power: the oxidized metal reduced/blocked the current from going to the LED light. So Solder makes it much easier to get a successful connection.

Try to tap the hard drive 4 to 5 times a bit harder. Seems like the read/write arm gets stuck in a problematic parking position. Just did that last night and my hard drive works like a charm again.

What worked for me: I tapped it a bit harder 4 to 5 times: now works like a charm again. I guess the read/write arm got stuck in an inconvenient position.

Thank you. I have a 1 TB SEAGATE BACKUP PLUS EXTERNAL HDD . I use it by attaching it with my honor 7x mobile through OTG for data transfer (bothside). I purchased it 11 months back from flipkart. I use it max once or twice in a month. I used it with desktop 3 times only since purchased. Yesterday when i was working with in by attaching it my mobile , suddenly one beep sound came and HDD light turned off. I performed safe remove process from top bar and after few seconds , it showed that " its safe to remove now" . I removed it and reattached it with mobile but no light no detection. Then again i removed safely and attached it in Sony laptop. It showed new usb driver installation. After completion of the same , no pop up came , no light on HDD , no drive shown in my computer . Then I went to printer & devices and found that it is showing the HDD there but when I went to its properties ; there is blank in VOLOUME TAB . In GENERAL TAB it is showing " device type : disk drive ; manufacturer : standard disk drive ; Location : on USB mass storage device ; device status : this device is working properly " . Another msg shows " windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for safe removal but it has not been removed from the computer (code 47) . To fix the problem , unplug this device from your computer and then plug in again ". I unmounted safely it by right clicking . Then reattached the same . Result is still same. Then removed. Restarted the laptop , attached again... same results... pls advise

I have the exact same device! Though my LED does function and the drive is spinning. I've checked it using Apple's Disk Utility App and it recognizes there are 14209 files stored on it but I can't "activate" it and "repairing" doesn't wrong. All that seems to keep me from using it is the error-message: Unable to read FAT (Input/output error). Please help!!!

If it is not "mounting" and using the repair tool doesn't work, then you would need to take in your external hard drive for repair. Apple software can only help so much when it may be a hardware issue

That was flux, not glue. It helps to make a good solder connection. It is important to use flux meant for electrical connections as the other sorts of flux will destroy the connections.

Hi, please read this and reply. I have the same Toshiba model hard drive, when I connect it to the computer it lights up, and continuously blinks, but it doesn't show up on computer, I also hear normal sound of the rotating disk. I removed cover and visually checked that disk is super clean (without any damage) and actuator arm/slider was parked in its place. I also removed PCB and checked the contacts visually, also good condition. The only problem is that I don't know how to read the PCB to diagnose and fix the problem if it really is on the board. I know it sounds really random but if you could help me with that would be great - I can pay you depending on difficulty level lol =) I can send you pictures of hard drive condition itself or we can directly videocall... I have multimeter tester and soldering tool... If you can not, I will understand, at least I tried :) Thank you!

Found a fix so your drive doesn’t get corrupted. Turn off auto updates on your Xbox. You can also unplug your drive when you turn it off or unplug before you update

I was wondering if you can help me, I have a 2.5 inch WD my passport ultra (4TB), 2017 version, suddenly it did not show the files and it does not eject when I eject it on my MacBook Pro, when I eject it, it comes back and it makes a very light sound, then turns normal, is there anyway to fix it rather than open it? Is it possible that the PCB is not working properly? I checked the HDD health and it says it's good nothing wrong with it, I installed the wd recoverit app and check it for a bit and it showed files, meaning I can restore them, but not yet cause I don't have enough storage, so in order to restore my missing files I am gonna need to buy a 4TB or 5TB one, that led me to make a search, I found out there are CMR, SMR and other types of drivers, I figured my WD ultra (4tb) 2017 might be a SMR drive, that is why it is faulty now or maybe it is the PCB! So, as I mentioned before I wanna buy another (4TB), that is why I wanna make sure that I buy a CMR one, Can you please give me a list of 2.5 inch (4Tb) drives that are CMR not SMR? Even if it was a 2015 or 2016 versions? Or any older, newer ones? Or any good reliable 2.5 HDD recommendation or advice? I would be grateful!

If the cable looks physically damaged then yes. Otherwise, listen for any noises or look to see if the light is blinking for indicators of what is going on

I love that fix, but I have basic soldering iron. I could get the flux, but I worry that I wont be able to hit the pins with the right amount of heat. I am thinking about finding the same model Toshiba Canvio 2TB and switch the boards. Do you think that will work? Thanks for any help.

Replacing the board is not going to work. You have to remove the firmware chip from the old board to the new one.. Each HDD is unique.

My external drive (Seagate USB 3.0) does not show in file explorer or disk management but the option to safely remove it is available and the LED light on PCB turns on. After I opened the case, disconnected the PCB and connected the drive to my computer using a SATA-to-USB3.0 cable, the option to safely remove is not available and the drive still doesn't show in file explorer or disk management. It is FLUX not oil, to help melt the solder and restore connectivity to the USB Pins.

Mine is Toshiba 1 TB Worked fine till yesterday when suddenly a copying process was stuck midway which compelled me to disconnect it directly and from then on the device is not recognized by WIN PC. Though the power LED is on while in use but it's static (not flikering.) and the disc inside is also rotating.

Mechanical drives are very sensitive to drops. There are a lot of moving pieces inside them that help them work. If any part gets even a little bit of damage, it will not work properly. There is still a chance to get your data off even after drops. It will have to go in for specialized repair in these cases
